You’ve read about how I got transfered to business class with Singapore Airlines. That was plain luck. The big question is, how do you get upgraded to business or first class when you check-in?
MSNBC.com and Forbes.com gives us some tips how:
Resist Outright Bargains
The class of ticket you buy often determines the likelihood of an upgrade. Travelers who buy full-fare coach seats have a better chance at getting into first class than those who choose discounted seats, which often aren’t upgradeable. It’s easiest to find and reserve full fares by talking with a telephone agent directly or using an airline’s online booking system where classes of fares are clearly marked.

I think I’ll stick to buying discounted fares and crossing my fingers, wishing somebody wants to change seats with me. I would love to experience flying first class someday; right now it pains me to look at first class ticket prices. Besides, flying economy is a big part of the aventure, isn’t it?

The trick is to accumulate lots of points in a frequent flyer program. I always fly CX and since I’m a ruby (one level up from basic) member, I get upgraded when the flights are full. I just flew from MNL_MELB last week and got upgraded to Biz class for MNL-HKG. Yey!!!
Exactly! I think that’s why I got upgraded for my Melbourne – Manila flight with PAL
As long as I keep at least 25,000 miles in my account, I can use those miles plus $350 for an upgrade to Business or First Class after purchasing an economy ticket. In the case of Business class upgrade, that’s a $5,000 ticket (Dallas to Seoul) for “only” $1300, for example. Well worth it to be able to lay down and sleep on that 13 hr flight! Plus, they loan you Bose noise cancelling headphones, a toiletry amenity kit (slippers, eye shades, toothpaste, etc.).
And if you can make it all the way to a First Class enclosed suite, they even give you pajamas!
