After much tossing and turning, I was finally able to sleep soundly around 4am. I awoke around 8am, wondering what time we would be heading out, and where we’ll go for breakfast. Vincent went out of his room around 9am, and by 10am, we were heading out his apartment.

The flight from Manila to Hong Kong was smooth enough. Because of the limited selection of shows that I can watch on PAL’s personal AVOD system, I was able to nap on the short flight across the South China Sea. I awoke to see nothing but fog outside my window, as the captain announce that we will be landing shortly. We land smoothly, and excitement replace the exhaustion that I was feeling.

A relaxing weekend at Tagaytay

Posted by nina under Cavite, Philippines

My dollie friends and I went out on a day trip to Tagaytay last Saturday. Tagaytay is the perfect summer getaway, if you can’t spare several days off work. The weather was gorgeous — the sky was blue with a scattering of fluffy white clouds, and while the sun was shining brightly, there’s always a fresh, cool breeze to keep the temperature down.

Times are tough and for most, travel is the last thing on their mind during a recession. However, I’ve been looking forward to this trip since last year, and there’s no way I’m putting this off, recession or no recession! Of course, this means keeping the expenses down and sticking to my budget (unlike what I did three years ago in Thailand).

Often, the biggest expense in any trip is the airfare. Though admittedly, airplane tickets prices have gone down drastically with the onset of no-frills airlines, it still eats up a huge chunk of one’s travel budget. That’s why it’s best to book tickets ahead in time or to take advantage of the airfare promos offered by the airlines. You’d have to always be on the lookout for these promos, because you can really save (though in some cases, it *can* be more expensive — booking way ahead often leads to flight cancellation or re-booking).

So how did I get round trip tickets to Singapore for less than US$100?

One morning in January 2006, I woke up thinking that I want to stop talking about travel and start traveling. I asked myself who should I go with, and decided I’ll go on my own. Going solo was a hard decision to make, but I had to do it, else I wouldn’t be able to travel.

I went online to research about the places I’m visiting, and in the process, I discovered travel blogs about women traveling alone around the world, on trips that spans one month to over a year. I had a deep admiration for these women’s courage to go off alone, and wished I had the guts to do it myself.

As mentioned in my previous post, me and my favorite travel buddies spent the weekend at Cagayan de Oro. Eric was anticipating that the Kaamulan would be set on that weekend, so we took advantage of an airline promo late last year. Luckily, the Kaamulan 2009 festival was set on March 7, the date of our flight to CDO. Unfortunately, we were late in going to Bukidnon, where the festival is held.

Still, it was great to discover and explore a new city. This is my second trip to Mindanao, and I’m hoping it wouldn’t be the last. I’ve yet to explore Bukidnon and try white water rafting in CDO.

Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon are fairly inexpensive cities. Getting around is no problem, as there are plenty of cheap transportation options available (except at the airport, where cabbies will charge a flat rate to get to the city). There’s the motorela, their version of the tricycle/tuk-tuk; the multicabs and jeepneys; airconditioned and non-airconditioned buses for inter-city travel, and; airconditioned taxis. The food is likewise affordable, as is accommodations in the city center.

We’re currently here in our hotel room in Cagayan de Oro, but earlier today, we spent the day in Malaybalay, Bukidnon for the Kaamulan Festival.
