[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online
[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.
I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in April 2013. This is geared towards applicants who holds a Philippine passport, though the preparation can be applied for other nationalities as well. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that I can’t answer all your questions. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.
After almost seven years, I finally have an update to my now epic How to Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa series. I have written two posts on the topic, both garnering over a thousand comments, with one getting over 4,500! I have stopped replying to comments, since I don’t think I’m not the best person to be talking about it, as my knowledge of the visa process is largely obsolete, so the visitors have taken upon themselves to answer each other’s questions, with successful applicants coming back to share their good news and help others. It has become a mini forum of sorts and I have to admit I’m happy it turned out that way. I found it to be a great help when I took another chance to apply for an Australian tourist visa once more.
Before I get to the visa application process, here’s some background about me and my circumstances: I am a Philippine passport holder, and have applied and received a visa from Australia before. I have a valid US Visa, with used tourist visas to Canada, Japan, and Myanmar. I also have more than 70 arrival and departure stamps from various countries, and that’s just in one passport. I am single and have my own company registered with the DTI. I have a bank account and a couple of credit cards, and I have two sisters who live in Australia, one of which is a temporary resident and the other a citizen. My intention to visit was for a short break from life in Manila, and to hopefully visit places I missed during my first two trips to the Australia.
Step 1: Download and read the necessary pages, documents, and forms.
This is very important, I can’t stress that enough. It won’t do to just ask questions without reading these web pages and documents first, because you’ll look like an idiot. Majority of your questions would likely be answered by the information written in these files. All these are available for download at the Australian Immigration website, immi.gov.au, and they are all free.

There is no need to print all of those pages or forms (unless you prefer to read them off the computer), but the one thing you should print is the visa application form. It’s a fillable form, wherein you can type in your answers on the form itself and print it afterwards. If you use Adobe Reader to open it, it will not save the changes to the form, so fill it out only when you are ready to print and submit. However, if you’re using Foxit PDF Reader, it can save the changes to the form, so you can fill it out and edit it later on before printing.
Step 2: Gather the required documents
Page 15 of Form 1419, Part M is actually an application check list. The column on the left lists all the required documents, while the column on the right lists the additional documents you may submit.
Here are the documents I submitted:
- Certified true copy of the identity page and pages with visa stamps of my valid passport
- Recent passport photo taken within the last six months
- Visa application charge in manager’s or cashier’s check
The Australian embassy do not affix visa labels anymore, so there’s no need to send your passport when you apply, unless you specify that you want a visa label. I would have done this, but the label costs AU$70.
Step 3: Gather your supporting documents
Here are the supporting documents I submitted. Remember that this vary depending on your circumstance. You’re not required to submit all of these, but it is advised that you submit as much supporting documents as you can to prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, and that you have a strong reason to come back to the Philippines.
- Birth certificate printed on security paper
- Certified true copy of my DTI Registration
- Certified true copy of my BIR Registration (Form 2303)
- Certified true copy of my Income Tax Return (From 1701)
- Certified true copy of the invitation letter from my sister
- Certified true copy of my sister’s pay slip
- Certified true copy of my sister’s passport bio page and employee ID
- NBI Clearance
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Itinerary
The Australian immigration require that all photocopied documents you submit are certified true copies. You can do this by going to the Notary Public.
If you look at the form, it doesn’t list the birth certificate as part of the documents needed. I included it anyway, since I have an extra copy. Also, when I called to have my document picked up, they mentioned something about the NSO and I asked if I still need to get another since I already have a SECPA copy. They said I can include my copy instead of getting a new one.

The NBI clearance isn’t really required either, but I included it since I have it anyway. I got it because it was required in the previous form, 48R. A medical isn’t required, but you may be required to get one if you are applying for a 6-month visa, or if you’re over 75 years old. The medical is only done through accredited clinics. From what I understand, you have to submit your application and use the reference code the embassy will give you when you go for your medical.
I also included a cover letter [Download sample of intent letter] explaining the purpose of my trip and that I wish to get a multiple-entry visa, since I want to make a side trip to New Zealand. This isn’t really necessary, since the form now asks for your trip’s purpose. You are also asked to provide an itinerary of your trip, though you are not required nor advised to make any bookings until your visa is approved.
Step 4: Buy a manager’s check for the visa fee
The visa fee is AU$115, which is Php 5,100, based on the conversion rate at the time. Please double check the fees and the conversion rate, as this can change anytime. I bought my manager’s check from BDO, since I have an account there. Based on the comments in the previous blog posts, there are banks that would not let you buy a manager’s check if you don’t have an account with them. Best to call and inquire with the banks in your area if they’ll let you buy a manager’s check from them even if you don’t have an account.
Step 5: Lodge your application

You don’t have to go to the embassy to submit your application. There are two ways to submit: you can either call the embassy hotline and have them pick up your documents or submit them in person at the VIA Center.
I opted to go with the call center, since it was summer and don’t want to be away for too long from my electric fan. Calling the hotline costs Php 32 per minute, not including the charges from your network provider, if you are calling from a mobile phone. My phone call took about 10 minutes (which included a long wait for them to finish a spiel, and another wait for an operator to be available), and cost me Php 339.29. If you’re going this route, listen closely at the start of the spiel, because there is an option to skip that and go directly to request for a pick up.
The courier fee for Metro Manila is Php 320, paid directly to the messenger who will pick up your documents. This fee covers both pick up and delivery after your application as been processed.
VIA Center have offices in Makati and Cebu.
Step 6: Wait for your visa
Visa processing takes about ten days all the way to 30 days. I called to have my documents picked up on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. It was almost 5pm when I called, and was told that they have already reached the quota for pick up the follwing day. My documents were picked up on Thursday, April 4. I received a text from the embassy that my documents were received on Monday, April 8.
By the third week of April, I was wondering what’s happening to my application. Someone who commented on my previous post said her application was received around the same time and she already has her visa. I started worrying when someone who submitted a week after I did said she already got her visa grant. That’s when I also found out that the embassy conducts phone interviews.
Apparently, they don’t do this to all applicants, only for those they feel they need to clarify certain answers to the application form. Worry changed to distress when I missed not one, but FOUR calls from the embassy. The first call was to our house phone, and my sister gave them my mobile number since I was out of the house. The first call to my mobile came while I was struggling to get off a packed LRT, so I had to cancel it. The next two came when the phone was in silent mode because I was at an event. You can just imagine how frantic I was.
I ended up calling the number, but it was the consulate’s trunkline number. I was told to just call the visa information number (845 9200). Because I do not know how to follow instructions, I called the hotline instead, and was told to send them an e-mail, which can be found on the immigration website. I sent an e-mail using the contact form there, and did not receive any response.
On May 7, just a day shy of one month since they received my documents, I called the hotline again, after getting no response or call from the embassy. The operator took pity and gave me a number to contact, which is the consulate hotline. I wasn’t able to talk to anybody, but I did get an e-mail address. I sent another e-mail, which again did not receive any response.
I finally got a text on May 14 that my documents have been dispatched to the courier for delivery. It did not mention if my visa was granted or not. My documents came the following day, and I was so relieved that my application was granted. It wasn’t a multiple entry visa, as I was hoping for. The visa was granted on May 10, and since it was a long weekend, it wasn’t dispatched until after election day.
Unlike before, the embassy not just issue visa grant letters for tourists. You need to bring this when you leave Manila, as the local immigration would ask for your visa before they stamp you out of the country. Also, instead of having a one-year validity, my Australian tourist visa is only valid until November 2013.

If you been charged already .. yes it will be affect your visa until you been cleared. Ongoing cases still the embassy knows from your Police check as well.
Hello sissies! Lahat ba kayong aalis roundtrip ticket ang binili? Meron pa dito na one way lang binili? Hinarang ba kayo sa Immigration or was asked to purchase a return ticket? Hello I just wanna ask if I can a get a tourist visa if I have a non rrlative sponsor I have australian citizen at australia and she’s invitung me to visit in her place and she is also willing to be my sponsor. My problem is I dont have a bank account or any bank statement. May valid passport ako and I can provide some documents aside from that one. Hello everyone! Kumusta po? Just wanna ask for a clarification po sana. I am currently holding a Tourist Visa (which says its validity is until last month of this year, it is also with multiple entries but with “max 3 months stay” and “No Further Stay” condition. Sa ngayon po, I am here in Australia and will possibly lodge PMV when I come back in the Philippines. I understand po I can go back here straight in AU when everything is done in regards to my PMV application, of course with my current tourist visa since it is apparently good for a year, but then again, I’d like to know if it is possible for me po to re-apply for another Tourist Visa to get the chance of not getting the “max 3 months stay” and the “No Further Stay” condition if ever I lodge it together with PMV. I understand that it sounds like “gastos lang yan”, but PMV processing period po kasi usually takes 3 to 6 months po and I prefer going back to PH when my CO informs me to come back and tells me that my PMV is ready, instead of going back to PH when my 3 months stay in AU is over and wait for my PMV result, and worst case scenario is if it takes longer than 6 months (because we never know and it’s all up to the CO), then fly back again here until my current Tourist Visa expires which I think is mas magastos. Hehe. Salamat ho ng marami in advance sa mga tutulong para po mapaliwanagan ho ako. remember me mga sis..just want to share my experience..im still here in oz holding my single entry of my tourist visa with no condition 8503 No Further Stay, that means i can extend my visa but my husband And I choose other option, we apply spouse visa onshore our agent is in phils.they send it last wednesday and arrive at department yesterday afternoon and today i receive my Bridging visa A which is im allowed to remain lawfully in australia until my spouse visa result comes though..wen u apply for spouse visa onshore automatic bbigyan ka ng bridging visa..

so ngayon ung spouse visa ko is on proccessing na im just waiting a request from embassy for my medical..

I checked their site there are only certain countries they allow to lodge online. ill be checkin the requirements at the immig tom. u can check this site too.

hi sis Liz, where you in OZ sis? well, sis B is correct you cant lodge online for the extension of visa. The very best way to do just send your new application by POST. Same document lang sis but be sure ths time your intent letter is more convincing to them. hanap ka ng valid reason sis para maaprove extension sis. Yong sa partner mo ganun din same requirements lang yong sinubmit mo dati. sana lang may copy ka pa. you can use credit card sis for payment fill up u lang part L.

hello sis B, its better for sure you lodge through POST. yes u can get married even you are under visit visa. bridging visa the immi will give you that once if you are lodging Partner visa. The form 600 you said maybe thats subclass 600. But if u haven’t received any confirmation via text or email, type this on on google http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/forms/philippines. answer the questions and at the bottom part there’s a message box. Tell them about your concerns. You might receive an email either tomorrow or in the next couple of months.

i lodged 21st of May. received a text message a day after that they got my application. until now no response yet. i guess it will take a month again or more due to holidays they’re having everytime.

Hi Gina, can u send me your email address? I need to ask some questions on what you have submitted sa embassy. I still didn’t receive any reply or call from them since I lodged my application. I called them last Wednesday but the customer service girl said that its still on process. Maybe my application for partner visa also affects the decision that’s why it takes a long time.

May, you can either apply online or thru post. I went to the immigration here in Adelaide last Wednesday. The immigration doesn’t actually entertain walk-in applicants for the visa extension. U need to find out the immig location in Gold coast. U need to fill out the same form 1419, subclass 600, letter of intent, financial statement, etc.. same dox u have submitted nung nag-apply ka nung visa while u were in the Philippines.

u have 2 options to send, online or thru post. I suggest to find the department of immig located in Gold coast and mail ur application to them. I am not exactly sure about online application, Philippines is not included in the list of countries which are allowed to do their application online. ur intent letter should state the reason/s why do u wanna extend ur stay here in Aus. U can wether extend 3,6,12 months…same application pa rin sis form 1419.

Hi guys! Na-grant visa ko in just a day.walang text or call ang officer before granting or delivering my visa, only Air21 texted me na idedeliver na daw within the day. I have a 3-month-toursit-visa and pwede din ako mag aral for short courses lang. It’s my first time sa country na need ng visa. So i was pretty lucky na na grant visa ko in 1 day lang. I was employed when i was applying my visa. I think malaking factor ung COE and work related documents na papakita mo and yung sponsor mo siempre, his supporting documents that he has all the capacity na suportahan ka on your stay in Australia, ay malaking factor. I also showed them my dad’s lot tittle. Then ung show money ko naman nasa 25,000 pesos lang (prinint screen ko lang online) and I didnt show any bank statement or credit card or billing statement ko dahil wala ako ng mga yon. LOL. However, they aren’t really particular gano kadami pera mo to go here. They’re just very particular kung gano ka totoo ung papers mo and of course kung ganon mo nilagyan ng effort ang pag-aayos ng documents. CLEAN and ORGANIZE papers is a must. ung print out nyo dapat super clear and colored yan para makita nila na you really put so much effort to it since they’ll base everything on the documents that you will show them.Then ung documents ng BF ko halos karamihan may stamp sa justice of peace.he didnt not scan his papers then emailed me, he actually sent it thru express mail pa para original lahat ng signature na mapakita nya. Yung papers ko kasing kapal ng parang mag-mimigrate! haha YES! kahit O.A na documents mo, mas maganda yon (basta organize lang with explanation letter about the certain paper na pinapakita mo). Mas maganda yon kesa kulang kulang ka.

Its my 1st application and i got 1yr multiple entry visa 🙂 basta compete and organize. Ung lahat ng pwede tanugin nasagot nyo na thru docs. Just show your a genuine tourist and your profile is good. same requirements and took 7 working days. Besides my partners supporting docs. I also submitted a lot from me like financially(2 savings account in bank cert, 2 credit cards -gold and platinum), occupation(self employed docs, tax returns, registration), assets(car, condo-joint with parnter), travel insurance, investments mutual fund cert. Then I stated in my application form I might apply for a partner visa in the future and wont risk it by not abiding the rules of a tourist visa. It was my 1st au visa and multiple 1yr. so im very lucky 🙂 basta organize, simple, straight to the point and show your a genuine tourist and that you will go home to phils.

I didn’t get any update too since I lodge it. Only from Air21 later on when they will deliver your visa. So relax and thing positive ka lng dyn 🙂 approve yan!

Mejo confusing . You applied for 3 month s multiple entry tourist visa and they granted you a 1yr. Validity. That’s it maybe kasi if it’s for 1yr. Tv they requires medical and the result really take months
It means that the visa is valid for one year. So example, if the visa was granted June 9, she can enter Australia with her visa anytime until it expires on June 8 the following year. Upon each entry, she can stay for up to 3 months. Since it is a multiple entry visa, she can exit Australia, come back, and stay for another 3 months.

I can’t really answer, since I never applied for an extension. If the extension is considered as a new visa, it invalidates your current visa. To be certain, it’s best to call the immigration office in Australia to confirm what’s the best course of action for you.

Kaya mejo naconfused ako lalo na when I ask if she did medcal tas nd daw, also she only took her result 1week, then she said mdcal are for those who stayed at AU for more than 3months. So I therefore conclude that what she holds is a 3months multiple entry valid for 1yr. Po 🙂 nalito kasi ako sa unang statement nya mhirp tlga pag d complete.

No sis I hold 12months multiple entry June2014-June2015 but 3months max stay each entry. So for example I go in Australia July,Aug,Sept then leave even for a day then I can go back Australia the next day they will give me 3months again. So I can go in and out Australia until my visa expires on June 2015. Bsta 3months max stay lng ako kaya cguro di ako pinag medical.

You don’t need a sponsor to apply for a tourist visa, but you do need to be able to provide documents that gives proof that you can afford to travel there, and that you have strong reasons to come back home.

Ako dito sa 2nd tv. Ko I haven’t got any acknowledgedment from the day I lodged unlike the first time I applied for tv last yr., what I did was I sent them an email on the 15th day of my app. Cause I got nervous na. Then they acknowledged my email on the same day, right after that day they email me again that my application is under assessment, tapos kahapon ng hapon got another email 5:00pm from my case officer wherein the decission is attached with it. Hi @dhenji, I got my visa grant today. 2 days short before 1 month of application. I lodged May 21st and embassy got it the day after. I have been doing the follow up but they said its still on process. My husband already complained to Sydney embassy why it took so long where in fact the last 3 are just 15 days max. I think they already lifted the 8503 condition therefore we can stay longer. Thanks God for the good news.

Ibig sabihin nyan dapat makapasok ka na ng Australia by December 17 para magamit yung visa. Kung lumampas ng December 17, di na valid ang visa. Pag pasok mo ng Australia, puede kang may stay for up to 3 months

I registered my job in BIR paying for a professional tax. We do all transactions online. Since, I am working with the companies overseas/in the Philippines for ages I don’t longer have a contract and I am paid by monthly just like any other employee working in a company. Do you think it is possible to bring my job in Aus since nakaregister naman po ako dito? Please help po.
If you have an ITR, you can submit that with your documents to show that you are earning an income. As for bringing your work to Australia, I’m not sure what the consul’s decision would be regarding that. I am also an online worker, and in my application, I always say that I am going there on a holiday, and will not be working while I am in Australia.

It means you can pick up your documents from the VFS already. They do not state the result of the application, you’ll only find out when you receive them.

Hello Ms Nina, ive been ur blog follower for years now, nice to be back reading ur blog again, unfortunately i didnt hv a chance to sometime reading some, now am trying to hv some infos, who anybody got same situation like me, and probably can help me out to do some again to begin with, ive an aussie bf and he call me as a fiancee alrdy, for 5 yrs now weve been in a relationship, now we both trying to catch up and apply for me a 12months tv, or what visa is appropriate to apply for it, if possible i would like to apply to be atleast be permanently in Australia, but, am still married in the philippines and separated for 14yrs now, can anybody, esp Ms Nina to help me out to what a visa can i apply for this, just hv a 4time TV granted alrdy, now am here in queensland looking for some infos to apply again on my next return, co-bloggers help and of course Ms Nina is very much appreciated, what things to be done and what requirements i must have…thank you and my best regards
hi desiree how are you, sis what dont u apply a de facto visa. isa sa mga requirements kasi niya 1 year proof na living together of your fiancee since pabalik balik kana sa oz 4th time. so i think more 1 year na ung stay niyo together dyan sa oz, after that pa register niyo ung 1 year living nio together kumbaga sa atin like live in, puedi , while.. ur in oz puedi ka maglodge sa oz onshore f wala kang no further stay condition u can do extend and while waiting sa result sa de facto visa.. u bibigyan ka nman nnag bring visa a, pero the condition is u not allowed to work study.. but u can wait the result sa oz.. f u want to travel balik sa pinas aply ka nman nnag bringing visa b.. i have a lot of friends na ganyan situation, since ur still married in the phlippines and u not annuled yet, de facto visa para sayo sis.. once granted na de facto visa u, u already temporary wait for another 2 years for ur permanent.. ..
