Whenever I post my travel expense post on a Seair destination, someone always ask in the comments why my tickets on Seair are free. That’s because I’m a part of the Seair Adventure Club. This is an exclusive club of Pinoy travel bloggers who get to travel and explore the different destinations that Seair fly to. Thanks to Seair, I’ve been to Batanes, El Nido, and of course, Boracay. Now here’s your chance to fly with Seair for free (and stay at Microtel while you’re at it!!

Seair’s 19-seater Let-410

Eight lucky bloggers will be chosen to join an all-expense paid bloggers’ tour of Boracay from September 10 to 12, 2010. The contest is pretty simple: just blog why you should be chosen to join the tour. Easy peasy, right?

Now go write that blog entry! Bear in mind that the contest ends on August 20, 2010, and for your entry to count, you must post a link on Seair’s Facebook Page (you have to Like it first before you can post!)

For more details, here’s the entire contest mechanics:
1. South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR) and Microtel Inns & Suites will be choosing eight lucky bloggers to join an all-expense paid bloggers’ tour of Boracay from September 10 to 12, 2010. This includes round-trip tickets from Manila to Caticlan and accommodation at Microtel Boracay.

2. To be selected, you will have to write a blog entry telling us why you should be chosen to join the tour. Each blog entry must have a link to the SEAIR website <http ://flyseair.com/>, the SEAIR Facebook Fan Page <http ://www.facebook.com/flyseair>, and the Microtel Philippines website <http ://www.microtelphilippines.com/>.

3. You can publish your entry from 12:00 a.m. of July 26, 2010 to 11:59 p.m. of August 20, 2010. Only one entry per blog will count.

5. Three winners will be selected by a panel of judges based on which is the most compelling. The top three entries with the highest scores from the judges will be invited to the tour.

6. Three winners will be selected by fans based on the number of “likes” to the link. The three entries with the most number of “likes” by 11:59 p.m. of August 25, 2010 will be invited to the tour.

Thank to everyone who shared their Metro Manila itineraries! It was such a joy to read the replies, specially the ones that included detailed descriptions, significance of the places and means of transport. It gave me plenty of new ideas for when I have friends and family coming to visit. If you’re thinking of places to bring your guest, the comment section of that post is rife with possibilities!

Chyng deliberately disqualified herself by saying outright that she wouldn’t take her guests around Manila, while Cornelio started with Manila, yet ventured out of town and had his itinerary spread for more than a day. I intentionally limited the itinerary to one day and only within Metro Manila. Why? Because most of those who travel to Manila only transit here — they fly in only because Manila is the main international hub and they use it as the jump off point to exploring places outside Manila.

Father Blanco’s garden circa 2006

Allan Reyes said he’d take his guests to Tondo so that they will see the real Manila, and erica yu-b said she’ll take them for a peek at Smokey Mountain so that her guests would help make the Philippines a better place. I understand what you guys are coming from, but let’s face it — those squatters is what the world already have in mind when they think about Manila. That is what’s often depicted in the media. I believe it’s every Filipino’s responsibility to make the Philippines a better place, not our guest’s.

I want our guests to see a different Manila. I want them to see beyond the chaos and see the beauty underneath grime. Yes, Manila is dirty and disorganized. But when you look hard enough and embrace all its imperfections, you’ll come to appreciate its unique charm.

Rizal Monument at the Luneta park

Most entries focused just on Manila. Intramuros, Luneta, Binondo, Divisoria and Quiapo are favorites haunts. Didi Paterno and Lily Ang were very specific about where they’ll take their guests to eat (and gave me a list of new places to try). Jesy A., cherry and feliz v agreed that the best way to cap off a Manila tour is to watch the sunset and unwind at MOA. Jo Tan goes the extra mile by taking his guests to Corregidor, while Nico Quejano got me curious about this Sto. Niño de Titi that can be found in Quiapo. Kris Ariza has both the Manila Ocean Park and Manila Zoo in her itinerary, as do KC Binay.

Mav, on the otherhand said she’ll show her guests what Broadway theater is like in Manila, though she never specified where. Jam puts some quirk into his/her itinerary, shouting “TAHO” and “PUTO” as soon as they leave the house. Or did he/she meant to say they’d buy taho and puto? April will be taking her guests to Luneta, as she sees that it is “reeking of history, Pinoy culture and the true face of reality what with the nearby squatter area.”

The Pasig River ferry at the Escolta station

There were those who looked beyond Manila; I did say Metro Manila afterall. Both Juned and Dante thinks one of the must do’s is to ride the Pasig River Ferry to Intramuros. Tina took her guests on both ends of the spectrum: shopping in Bangkal, Makati then moving on to Cubao X in Quezon City. Wheatcliff takes his guest all around the metro, from Manila to Quezon City to Makati, while quiam just focused on QC and Marikina.

Of all the entries, the one I like most is Rolly Nunez’s that beautifully captures the totally of the Filipino culture:

A foreigner seeks for the culture, food, history and hospitality of the Filipino people. As a teaser, we will ride the cab or taxi down to Intramuros. I’ll treat him to the lokal “turo-turo” offering one day old, the famous “kwek-kwek,” and some dumpling experience for a small break. The walled city hp the best destination for them to introduce the richness of our values. It explains the artistry, talent, bravery, social apt, and among others. We will ride the “kalesa” or the more humane way instead of pallanquin. Like Magellan, we will circumnavigate the vicinity and let him enjoy the area while giving insights of the spots.

Next is the shrine of Dr. Jose Rizal or the Luneta Park. I’ll bring my old paper money and several coins which portrays our National Hero. And I’ll tell him some of his contributions for our independence. He is my idol and role model, for the love of our country after God. A small meal from the local “Mang Inasal,” the most famous marinated chicken. I’ll also explain how to eat it using hands and dipping it to “toyo-mansi”.

The next pit stop is the EDSA Shrine. We will ride the MRT from Taft to Ortigas. Displaying the unity of the people for the past decades. The shrine itself, the Ortigas Ilalim route of bus and the People Power Monument for the few to be proud of. A small snack from the “Mamang Sorbetero” will be special. A bun filled with ice cream is very excellent after walking a half kilometer long journey.

Then, we will use the mass transport system of bus from Ortigas to Cubao. A stroll from AliMALL will shaken up the hot senses from the sun.

After that, we will ride the jeepney routing Cubao and Montalban. “Patok” jeepney is the name of those who have loud music, colorful interiors, overspeeding and very fast jeepney. I’ll explain to him that it serve us by transporting merchant and goods from provinces to rural or urban areas and now, even passengers. We will alight at the Shoe Capital of the Philippines, Marikina. For me, it is our symbol of cleanliness and development. The Marikina River is a great facade for a small talk. And I’ll bring him to our house to accommodate and take care of him. Rest assured, he’ll enjoy the hospitality of us.

Congrats Rolly! I hope you enjoy the Imelda tour as much as I did

First off, thank you to everyone who liked the Just Wandering page on Facebook, and even more to those who joined the contest. It’s great to see new faces there, and not just those of friends who felt compelled to join because we’re friends. You know who you guys are :P

The correct answer to the question “When did I join the Big Binondo Food Wok?” is indeed July 2006. I joined upon my friend Vic’s invitation, and I have to say, that was the best Php 650 I’ve ever spent. It was just too bad that my camera died in the middle of the tour. I never did get around to blogging about the tour, except to mention it in passing in this entry.

As I said in the contest mechanics, the names of those who gave the correct answer will be collected and put through Random.org’s List Randomizer. Our lucky winner is…

During the Lakbay Norte tour last January, I somehow ended up with three extra Microtel 50% discount voucher. I already have one that came with my press kit, and I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to use all four cards before it expires in June 2010. I figured it would be better to raffle them off here instead of letting them go to waste.

Prez David not included

So what do you need to do to get the voucher? Simple: just share a travel tip for any of Microtel’s 9 locations. What’s your favorite restaurant in Puerto Princessa? What’s there to do in Tarlac? Where can I buy the sweetest strawberries in Baguio? Post your travel tips and secrets in the comment box and you’re eligible for a raffle entry!

Before we get to the mechanics, here’s the terms & conditions of the discount card:

Discount is based on rack/published rate and is applicable to one (1) room per stay.

Discount is for room accommodation only (good for 2 persons)

Hotel reservations are subject to availability and must be made in advance.

This is not valid during peak periods.

This must be surrendered upon check-in.

This is not convertible to cash.

This cannot be used in conjunction with any existing promotional offers, packages, internet rates, corporate rates, contracted rates and conference/group bookings.

This is not replaceable if lost or stolen.

Valid until June 30, 2010.

If you’re agreeable with their terms, let’s get on with the contest mechanics!

Contest Mechanics

Contest is open to all Philippine residents.

To enter, contestants must post a travel tip about any of Microtel’s locations (Baguio, Batangas, Boracay, Cabanatuan, Cavite, Davao, Mall of Asia, Palawan and Tarlac), in the comments section of this post. Be sure to enter a valid e-mail address so I can contact you in case you win. One comment is equivalent to one entry. If a comment contains tips for more than one location, poster gets another raffle entry (depending on the number of locations).

Contest is from March 26 until April 4, 2010.

Winners will be drawn via Random.org’s List Randomizer. Contestants that ends up in numbers 7, 9 and 13 gets the voucher. Winners will be announced on April 6 and prize will be shipped via courier.

Finally, a comprehensive map of Manila’s Chinatown! I remember my first trip to Binondo (the one that I can remember anyway). It was late at night and we were driving around this strange new place, guided by friend’s boyfriend who live in the neighborhood. I have absolutely no idea where we are, except that we were in Chinatown. The second time I went to Chinatown was when I joined Ivan Man Dy’s Big Binondo Food Wok tour.

The Big Binondo Food Wok Map and Ang Tunay Beefhouse’s mixed beef soup

He led us through Ongpin, Binondo’s main street, and down other smaller streets like Nueva and Salazar. He took us to the best places to dine in Chinatown, but I wasn’t really familiar enough with the place to remember where most of the places are.

A couple more trips to Binondo helped. Without Ivan to guide us through, I explored Chinatown with friends and family, discovering new restaurants and getting a hang of the street’s orientation. Of course, the problem with getting familiar with one place, it gets hard to give directions to those who haven’t been there before. Well, not anymore.

Ivan has recently come out with his Big Binondo Food Wok Map, a beautifully made guide through Manila’s Chinatown. It features Binondo’s interesting buildings, temples and of course, food places!

The corner right across #67 is where you buy kiamoy

I love how the streets are marked with big bold letters, attractions with cute illustrations and establishments with a star, a colored circle or a square so you can easily distinguish between different kinds of restaurants. The map is certainly not to scale, but it’s still a great companion when exploring Chinatown. Of course, this means that the cafe you’re looking for might be a lot farther than you think.

The map is given free to joiners of Ivan Man Dy’s Big Binondo Food Wok tour or you can buy the map at Bahay Tsinoy Museum (Intramuros), La Monja Loca Store (Intramuros) and Silahis Arts and Crafts (Intramuros) in Manila, the Libros Filipinos Bookshop (Filipinas Heritage Library) in Makati and Popular Bookstore in Quezon City. Or you can get one for free here!

Tell us what your favorite restaurant is in Binondo (and what you always order!) and you get a chance to win one of three Big Binondo Food Wok map! Contest runs from January 24 until January 31, 2010. Winners will be the top 3, as listed by Random.org and will be announced on February 1.

It’s December 25th, and as Manila sleeps, I sleepily slog through the last three hour stretch before my shift ends. But I can’t sleep without announcing the winners of my Best Travel Photo contest first!

HG and Mr. Snowman-made-of-sand wishes you a Merry Christmas!

Before I present the entries and the winner, I’d like to thank Ferdz and Estan for helping pick the winner for this contest. I knew picking just one would be hard, so I asked for their help. (plus, it adds credibility!) In between us three, a clear winner emerged once the scores were tallied. But first, let us look at the entries:

Ren, who is So Not Lost was the first to submit his entry with this photo taken in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The resort was practically deserted, and when we hit the beach, we were just awed and amazed by our surroundings. It was gorgeous. This picture captures everything I loved about that moment. We were surrounded not by the usual crush of people that you find on other, more popular beaches. All we had was the sky, the sea, and the sand. Everything was simply blue and tranquil, and there weren’t even any clouds to ruin our day.

– SoNotLost.com

The last to enter, was fellow travel buddy Marc, who took this photo during our first trip together:

This photo is entitled Muni-muni. This was taken at the top of Mount Tapiyas in Coron, Palawan. Tapiyas is actually a hill with some sort of monument of a crucifix made of steel. Tourists go there to get a scenic view of Coron. It was a long and tough 20-minute climb to the top. But once you’re there, the view was breathtaking. Very picturesque. Very breezy too. And that’s why this photo was so memorable.

– WeekendTrekker.com

Of course, other members of travel group also joined. Gail submitted a photo she took during another trip that we took together.

This is a photo of the wooden fence you will see upon entering Racuh A Payaman in Batan Island, Batanes—our very own Marlboro Hills. I took it in a rush, as my husband had already started nagging me to get on the multicab, threatening me that if I ever got left behind, I would never see my Shih Tzu ever again and all I would be stuck with were cows pooping just about everywhere. But I couldn’t help it—I had to take as much photos as I could, just so I’d have something to look back to when I got back to Manila.

– Kutitots.com

Not all of them had their photo taken during our trips. Karla, the second to submit, said that her best and favorite photo was of this idyllic scene at Carabao Island, Romblon.

The photo was taken at Carabao Island, Romblon (summer of 2007). I just love how the trees lined up that way just like the way we line up for the assembly when we’re still in either grade school or high school. The beauty of the place has been captured showing its white sand, pristine waters and the magnificent blue sky. The boat on the photo has added more drama to the photo since it’s facing towards the sea.

– Rockersworld.com

Eric’s favorite is also taken during a trip away from us. This gorgeous sunset scene was captured during his solo trip to Roxas just last month:

The photo below features sunset at the calm Panay River in Roxas City. I took the photo last November 29, 2008. My trip to Roxas City is memorable to me since this is I guess the only solo trip I had for this year.

Travelling alone is very exciting. It gives me the flexibility to explore a certain place at my own pace, without having to think of other people. I don’t have to worry if my companions are allergic to shrimp or garlic. I don’t have to think if my friends who’ll be travelling with me loves to explore old churches or just hang out in the beach.

– Byahilo.com

It seems it was mostly my friends who joined my contest. It’s either I’m terribly unpopular or my contests are just too hard. But I’m still glad Rotch took time from her hellish workload to share this photo she took in Bangkok.

what i love about this photo is that the subject is so beautiful, it makes it look like: 1) i don’t have a crap camera (which i do); and 2) i am not a crap photographer (which i am). i also loved how effortless it was to take it — there wasn’t a lot of messing around with timing and settings; he was just standing there, waiting patiently, heaving the weight of the domed temple roof on his glinting shoulders.

– Magnetic-rose.livejournal.com

There’s also David, who for some reason is calling his travel blog “Dave’s Travel Blog.” I’m touched he came out of his hiatus to join my travel photo contest with his La Tomatina Photo. I love reading his story about this story, how he went to battle with an almost full memory card. I feel your pain David, I once went to a festival without charging my camera’s battery! But despite that problem, he was able to snap this photo:

I elected to quickly delete a number of lame pictures of old buildings, set the camera to 640X480, and snap as many photos as I could during the aftermath and clean-up, as 40,000 weary revelers recovered from the carnage and made their way up the meandering streets to the showers and the train station.

Along the way I captured this moment, which well represents the sensations of exhaustion and catharsis which follow the intense hour of tomato madness.

– DavesTravelBlog.com

From the tomato festival in Spain, we are transported back to the Philippines with a photo Melo took during the Butanding Festival in Donsol. I have been to Donsol before and to Sorgogon for countless of times, but I have never seen a sunset as beautiful as the one he captured on camera.

After a sunny day, I found myself in a hammock waiting for the sunset in the resorts beach front. That was an amazing day, I got the chance to have a close interaction with a huge whale shark and the best part is…. I don’t know how to swim but thanks to our guide since he practically guided me all the way .

– OutofTownBlog.com

However, out of all the gorgeous photographs, one stood out and got the attention of the judges. Cathy’s photo of a painter in Paris has a certain charm that simply draws your eye to it. And that’s why Cathy won Justwandering.org’s Best Travel Photo Contest!

The picture above was captured during my trip to Paris in 2007. My husband and I were walking from the Eiffel tower and blindly trying to find our way towards the Louvre without a decent map. We did make it to the Pont Alexandre III, a magnificent and highly ornamented bridge overlooking the Seine River on a curve.

As we walked through the bridge, I noticed a single artist painting a picture of the famous tower, but I think he was doing it out of sheer joy, not profit. Not a single “for sale” sign around him or loads of similar paintings, so I believe he was painting it as a hobby. He didn’t notice me taking his picture behind him, but I’m happy it turned out well.

I wonder if he would have charged me for his photo?

– Juice247.wordpress.com

Two of the things I’m most passionate about is traveling and photography. I may not be the most hardcore backpacker, nor am I the best photographer, but that doesn’t stop me from wandering and taking photos.

The best thing about taking photos while traveling is that you get to preserve a moment that you’ll only get to experience maybe only once in your life. I love how a single photo can tell a story and how it can evoke the same emotions you felt when you were taking it.

Enrico Dee of Byahilo.com at Kayangan Lake in Coron, Palawan

To celebrate another great year, I am giving away signed copies of Robert Alejandro’s book, The Sketching Backpacker: Southeast Asia and parts of China, Jetro B. Rafael’s Backpack Photos postcard book and the gift of flickr: a one year Flickr Pro account, which gives you unlimited uploads and unlimited sets and collections. To win this awesome set, simply share your best travel photos and share the story behind the picture.

Biyahilo ba kamo? Spotted at Pier 1 in Cebu City. This photo never ceases to make me laugh.

Simple, no? It can be a picture of the most amazing sunrise you have witnessed in Cambodia or a photo of sea lions sunning themselves in the shores of the Galapagos. It just have to be a photo you have taken yourself, and it has to impress not only me, but also two of the best travel photographers (and my favorites) in the Philippines, Ferdz Decena of Ironwulf.net and Estan Cabigas of Langyaw.com, who will help me pick the winner of the contest.

Backpack: Southeast Asia and parts of China to help you plan your Asian adventure and Backpack photos to motivate you to travel.

To enter, create a blog post with the photo, and share the story behind the photo, and why it was memorable to you. Leave a comment or a trackback in this entry on or before December 19, 2008. The winner will be announced on December 25, 2008. I’m looking foward to seeing your photos

Thank to everyone who joined my Wii Nights contest and my Bratpack Bag Diaries contest. It was tough picking just one, but only one can win.

The winner of the Wii party package at Red Box is…

Roanne Lim!

I’m Jigglypuff from Super Smash Brothers. I’m cute and pink, and like Jigglypuff my singing puts people to sleep. If I win a Wii party at Red Box I can brush up on my singing and play the Wii at the same time, hitting two birds with one stone… hahaha! That is if I don’t put everyone to sleep first…

Congratualtions Roanne! You can schedule your Wii Party through Ms. Joyce Pogoy of GeiserMaclang by calling 0917-5234624, 812-8828 or 812-9199. I hope you don’t put your friends to sleep while singing

I know I said I will announce the winner of the Bratpack contest on the 19th, but since my weekend plans fell through, I can announce it now! The winner of the Jansport backpack is…

Kaoko!

Kaoko shared the sweet story of how she and her green Jansport met her boyfriend and his black Jansport.

There was a black backpack on the shelf, right where he usually placed his. “Is he visiting today?” I wondered. A few months ago, checking for his bag on the shelf was the first thing I’d do. Sometimes, I would sneakily put my backpack beside his where he’d be sure to see it, just so he’d know I was still in school and we could commute home together. I guess it was a force of habit, so I put my green backpack, identical except for the color, next to his.

Congrats Kao, you may contact Ms. Arbee Panga of GeiserMaclang at though 0917-5344624, 812-8828 or 812-9199.

Agains, thanks to everybody who submitted their entries, and to Bratpack, RedBox and Geiser Maclang for making this contest possible. Watch out for more contests here in Justwandering.org! I have another one coming up soon
