Applying for an Australian tourist visa

[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online

[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.

I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in October 2006. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that a lot has changed since 2006. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.

I’ve been getting quite a lot of inquiries about how to apply for an Australian visa so after a year of this post being in the draft, I’m finally writing it (with hopes of finishing it within 2 hours).

1. Download and read the necessary forms and documents for your visa class.

Everything you need to know about Australian visas are in the official Australian Immigration website at www.immi.gov.au. If you’re just going to visit Australia as a tourist, you fall under Tourist Visa (Subclass 676). The corresponding documents for this visa subclass are:

All files are in PDF format and would require Adobe Reader to open.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship of Australia regularly review and update their visa-related documents and requirements. It’s important that you have the latest edition for your reference, as well as the forms you will fill in.

[UPDATE April 5, 2013] Please note that as of March 23, 2013, the visa subclass for Australian tourist visa is subclass 600 and the application form is now form 1419.

2. Collect the documents needed and make copies of each.

The documents needed for every tourist visa application are listed in the forms. Once you have completed the documents, start filling in the forms. When filling out the form, carefully read the instructions and questions.

The Australian visa application requires you to pay a visa application fee of AU$100. There is an online conversion tool in the immigration website that shows the rate in your currency. The fee must be paid with a manager’s or cashier’s check issued by your bank for the Australian Embassy. Once you have completed your documents, filled in the form and acquired the manager’s check, make copies of everything. Seperate the originals and the copies.

3. Call the Australian Embassy hotline.

The hotline numbers to call for visa application pick up in the Philippines are as follows:

For PLDT/Smart/Touchcard Subscribers 1 (909) 362 – 2779
For Globe/Innove/Touchmobile Subscribers 1 (900) 362 – 2779
For Bayantel Subscribers 1 (903) 362 – 2779

Source: Visitor Information and Application Australia

This is considered a long-distance call, so brace yourself for the ginormous phone bill (Php 32 per minute). The hotline is available Mondays to Fridays, 6am – 8pm, and Saturdays, 8am to 6pm. If you are just calling to inquire about the visa application process, you can call the free hotline at (02) 845-9200.

Schedule for a visa pick up. The agent will ask you questions about your application, so better have your documents with you for reference. After the question and answer portion, the agent will then give you instructions regarding the pick-up and return of your documents. You are encouraged to be there when the FedEx guy picks up the documents. By the way, the courier fee is not included in the Australian visa application fee, so be ready to fork out around Php 300 for Mr. FedEx. This fee covers both the pick up and return delivery.

UPDATE (July 5, 2011): The process has changed since this post’s writing. Here’s the new process for submitting your application, according to the VIA website:

1. Phone-in / Book for a roundtrip Courier Service.
This service is a phone-in option that includes the pick up of the completed Application Form and supporting documents from the applicant’s given address and delivery after processing at the Embassy. This service is available nationwide and involves a flat rate; roundtrip courier fee.

2. Walk-in / Direct Lodgment at the VIA Centre
This is a walk-in option where an applicant or an authorized representative can directly submit the completed Application Form and supporting documents at the Embassy’s Visa Information and Application (VIA) Centre. This option involves a lodgment service & handling fee which includes the one-way delivery by courier after processing.

Source: VIA.ph

4. Start the agonizing wait for denial or approval.

Visa processing can take from three days to one month. The shortest visa processing we had was three days, I think, and the longest was one month. That one month was due to the high influx of visa applications, as my sister applied on the last week of November. Apparently, a lot of Filipinos are applying for visas during this time (probably hoping to spend Christmas in Australia with their families).

So there you have it! I hope this is helpful in someways. If you have any questions, just post them in the comments area, and I’ll try to answer as best as I can 🙂

P.S. Nina, in the 48-r form for the australia tourist visa application, there is a question there that goes this way, “what is your purpose of visiting australia” to other people, this may sound very simple yet with a lot of complexities. could you kindly advise me if its okay to answer “to visit my Friend______ and his family for a holiday”. because i have been stucked in answering that question alone. my purpose in going to really visit my friend and meet his family. the friend that i have been mentioning has visited me in the philippines last year 2009, and has already met my family. can i attach our pictures over here and our correspondence via email as a supporting document?

    thank you Nina…..,

hi nina! quick question, my bf and i have been together for 4 years and we see each other by either him coming here to manila or we meeting up in hk or vietnam or wherever he travels for work. Its time for me to visit him in melbourne to see how his life is and maybe meet the fam. I am employed here and just plan to visit for 2 or 3 weeks. Do you think its ok to tell the Australian embassy that I’m visiting my bf? Wont they refuse me coz I might not come back and just stay wit him there? I see I have similar cases with some of the people who commented on ur blog but ur reply is not published so sorry would have to ask you to keep repeating yourself. Would appreciate a reply.. thanks

    Hi Ms. Nina,
    Thanks for your blog.
I am sure I can provide the ff:
    • Signed Form 48R
    • Passport photographs
    • Copy or the actual Passport
    • Copy or the actual passbook
    • Copy or original copy of bank certificates
    • Letter of invitation
I am engaged to australian citizen at magpapakasal na kami on October this year.pero gusto niyang magvisit ako sa Australia on April or May to meet his parents and probably I would stay there for 2 or 3 weeks. I’m looking forward for your advice Ms. Nina. Any advice could you share will be highly appreciated. At thankful talaga ako dahil nakita ko ang blog mo. More power to you Ms. Nina. And God bless you.

Hi there, I got the right website and read the threads on how to apply for a tourist visa. I’m planning to visit Oz this July. I don’t have any relatives there, but my cousin who is from Belgium and her husband will sponsor all my expenses during my stay in Oz. I’m currently unemployed, not enough money on my bank account. I’ve visited a consul to help me to apply for a tourist visa. He said that I have to have concrete reasons to visit Oz. So, I’m planning to attend the Hillsong conference on July, which will also be sponsored by my cousin. In my case, what would be the requirements to apply for a visa, thanks a lot. God bless you more!

She has no money or property to speak of, but I have a good job here and I am happy to pay for all her expenses while she is here. I assume the best way to go about this is to write her a letter of invitation? How do I go about this, what sort of information do I need to include, and do I need to provide statements etc for her to show to the Australian Embassy?

There are really lots of changes specially in application fee for a sub-class 676 visa or also known as the Tourist Visa. It cost Php 4,700.
There is also a medical fee for your medical check-up recquired by the Australian Embassy.
As for the Bank Statements, you really have to show them as much as Php 400k in your bank statement to prove them that you will be coming back. You can find some persons who offer services and specializes in lending money (look at the buy and sell paper) for a bank statement and there is a charge of 2.5%, like for example, they can lend you a Php 100 grand but you have to pay them Php 2,500 and the money will be on your bank for a 15-day period.
Little did our fellow Filipinos know that its really hard to apply for a tourist visa nowadays WITHOUT a sponsor whos gonna send his/her statutory declaration (to be submitted together with your papers/forms) as they will stand as your guardian, financial provider assistant and also your accomodation.
And also there is no “personal interview” in applying for a Tourist Visa unlike in some other countries.
Philippines has a good reputation here in Melbourne (I dont know in some states) coz there are really a lot and lot of fellow Filipinos here whos really very helpful (but not all, but majority are) and lots of Filipino Grocery Stores (just like our sari-sari store) that can be found outside in some shopping centres.
I suggest before applying for a Tourist Visa, make sure someone will sponsor you from here and that sponsor will show his/her financial stability for the past few months (optional).

  31. eKeL Avatar
    eKeL

I wanna suggest this but pls “dont rely just on this”… You have an option.

first, download and print the necessary forms (read the instructions at the topmost).
second, fill up the form (for the first timers, the longer you want to stay the shorter of chances you will get)
third, make legal documents for your assets such as cash (bank statement), cars (deed of sale), house, lot, etc. (tip: the more you have, the more chances you will get)
fourth, have your medical exam in the hospital or clinic of your choice first so you will know if you will pass the medical exam recquired by the Australian Embassy (its called “double-checking)
fifth, ask your sponsor to send you his/her asset (photo copy of payslips for the past 3 months) and a statutory declaration signed by the chemist or the police.
sixth, if you have all the necessary documents, call the call center (provided at the topmost on this post) and get your schedule of pick-up of the courier.
seventh, ahead the schedule of pick-up, have your documents with you and go to the nearest church and have your documents be blessed coz I personally believed that prayers can move mountains.
eight, wait for 3-5 working days (off-peak season) or as long as a month for peak-season.
ninth, after getting the Tourist Visa, dont forget to thank me. Just Kidding!
Good Luck and See yah! =)

I had a boyfriend in aussie and he frequently visit me here, but this coming christmas he wants me to meet his family..I have read and printed out the visa for sponsored family and friends. But by reading it i became confused because its more about the family..Is this the right visa (sub class 679) or if i applied for a tourist visa how much money in the bank do i need to show? my BF is willing to support all my expenses. And for info i am also a government employee..

wished you a food day and may God bless u n your family.

    thanks

  42. nina Avatar

Alex: It’s much better if you can prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, even if your boyfriend offered to pay for your trip. If you are self-employed, it’s best to submit a copy of your income tax return.

As for the bank statement, there’s no set rule on how much money you need to have in your account, but it should be enough to cover your airfare to and from Australia, your expenses while traveling around the country and some extra in case of emergencies.

Florence: I’m not familiar with how the sponsored visa works, because that’s not the visa class I applied for. I applied for the Tourist Visa (Subclass 676).

  43. hello Avatar

Hello te, ask ko lng po kung may possibility bah na maaproved visa ko, kasi i have boyfriend from aussie, and next month were planning to lodged tourist visa subclass 676 together. Im working in internet cafe po,but he will be the one sponsoring me is it okey not to provide certificate of leave. And ano ba tamang ilagay dun sa purpose of going to ausie?? thanks po and wait po ako sa reply kung ano mga advice nyo te..

  44. nina Avatar

    Hi,

If you are employed, you need to submit an employment certificate that indicates the salary you receive every month. If you are self-employed, you need to give them a copy of your Income Tax Return. Even if your boyfriend is sponsoring the trip, it’s important to prove that you have the means to travel to Australia and pay for your stay there.

As I mentioned in my previous comment, you also need to have sufficient funds in your bank account. About 150,000 might do, but it’s always better to have more than that amount.

    I hope this helps.

I have been acquainted with this guy for 2 months and he is willing somehow to sponsor me for my expense, accommodation and etc. Somehow what is the visa we apply,as the one I have read in the Australian Website,is 679 Sponsored Family Visitor (Short Stay) was the best option we can find for someone sponsoring even though were not related. I am somehow a fresh grad but a free lancer graphic artist both web and digital media. I dont have a job but,is it enough to be granted for a tourist visa? coz my friend is somehow a business owner and can provide, financial support. What are the things I should present more in order to prove my intent to return to Philippines? I would very much like to hear back from you.
