Win a Microtel discount voucher!

During the Lakbay Norte tour last January, I somehow ended up with three extra Microtel 50% discount voucher. I already have one that came with my press kit, and I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to use all four cards before it expires in June 2010. I figured it would be better to raffle them off here instead of letting them go to waste.

50% off from Microtel
Prez David not included

So what do you need to do to get the voucher? Simple: just share a travel tip for any of Microtel’s 9 locations. What’s your favorite restaurant in Puerto Princessa? What’s there to do in Tarlac? Where can I buy the sweetest strawberries in Baguio? Post your travel tips and secrets in the comment box and you’re eligible for a raffle entry!

Before we get to the mechanics, here’s the terms & conditions of the discount card:

  • Discount is based on rack/published rate and is applicable to one (1) room per stay.
  • Discount is for room accommodation only (good for 2 persons)
  • Hotel reservations are subject to availability and must be made in advance.
  • This is not valid during peak periods.
  • This must be surrendered upon check-in.
  • This is not convertible to cash.
  • This cannot be used in conjunction with any existing promotional offers, packages, internet rates, corporate rates, contracted rates and conference/group bookings.
  • This is not replaceable if lost or stolen.
  • Valid until June 30, 2010.

If you’re agreeable with their terms, let’s get on with the contest mechanics!

  • To enter, contestants must post a travel tip about any of Microtel’s locations (Baguio, Batangas, Boracay, Cabanatuan, Cavite, Davao, Mall of Asia, Palawan and Tarlac), in the comments section of this post. If a comment contains tips for more than one location, poster gets another raffle entry (depending on the number of locations).
  • Contest is from March 26 until April 4, 2010.
  • Winners will be drawn via Random.org’s List Randomizer. Contestants that ends up in numbers 7, 9 and 13 gets the voucher. Winners will be announced on April 6 and prize will be shipped via courier.

i don’t know if this is a tip but never visit paradizoo. it’s a waste of your time. no interesting animals unless you consider a five-legged cow to be a highlight of this trip. waste of money too. just go to residence inn which is just located by the main road of Tagaytay.

Oh, in Boracay, try hanging out at Kasbah Bar and Resto. Aside from the great food, you can drag their couches (at least we did, hehe. we asked their permission of course) near the shore and just hang out and have their drinks there.

In Davao, wake up very early in the morning and try their Soup Number 5 by the palengke:)

In Cavite, the Mushroom Burger house is a MUST TRY. You might also want to eat lunch at Josephine’s or the Residence Inn (also a mini-zoo) for a pcturesque view of the Taal Lake.

At Mahogany Market, beef prices are at a low bargain of 150-200 pesos per kilo!

When in baguio, never pass up Cafe by the Ruins! It’s a nice place to hang out with friends or loved ones. ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite restaurant in Puerto Princesa is called Ditchay’s! It’s french fusion using only fresh local ingredients!

Baguio tip: You can hire a taxi or fx (Revo) to give you a day tour. It’s way cheaper than the rates in Manila since they don’t need to turn on the A/C. ๐Ÿ˜€

Also, if you’re going to Baguio during school break, alternative accommodations are the student boarding houses. They’re clean and cheap but not much on comfort.

Batangas tip: If you’re going to commute to Laiya beaches, be wary of tricycle drivers that will try to charge you excessively! Better to ask for the Jeep schedules and time your trip to avoid paying more.

Boracay trip: There’s a Catholic church just behind the stretch of resorts/hotels in Station 1. There are nearby sari sari stores and carinderia where you can buy cheap food/toiletries.

Palawan trip: There’s sometimes a long line in the Underground River tour. Make sure you’re there early so you won’t need to wait in line. Also, assign someone who’s good in taking orders to sit at the front during the tour. He/she will be told by the bangkero where the light should be directed to. If the “light man” doesn’t know left from right, you might miss some of the interesting sights.

When in Tarlac, don’t forget to drop by the Isdaan. Dine in a hut, surrounded by – you guessed it – fishies! Be transported to another world and be among giant Aztec and Asian structures (a somewhat strange combination). Release tension at the Taksiyapo and hurl dishes, breakables, and even television sets on a wall (for a price). Definitely a place to check out!

In Mall of Asia, you can deposit luggage at the “Package Pick-up” point along Ocean Drive between the Main mall and Entertainment mall (they don’t accept luggage in the department store or supermarket anymore).

Palawan: cashew nuts are cheap at the market. Pwede pa tumawad.
Tarlac: keep an eye on your car while eating at Isdaan. One customer’s vehicle was broken into and robbed: http://i40.tinypic.com/6r3vaw.jpg

Davao: Do not miss Eden Nature Park and visit the famous Pagasa Phil Eagle! Buy fruits along the way coz they are cheaper than the Bangkerohan market. If you can’t stand on the real durian fruit, try at least the durian coffee in Blugre Coffee shop. Try the best sans rival (for me) in Lachi’s and see the whole Davao city at night in Jack’s ridge. ๐Ÿ™‚

Baguio: Ukay Ukay in Hilltop, back of Baguio City Market. They do not look they came from “ukay”. And you can find luxury brands too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hmm…it’s only open to Philippine residents. Schucks. What if you’re visiting from another country? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Also, when are peak seasons in the area?

Palawan TIP- If you are craving for seafoods, go to Badjao Inn, Ka Lui, Lotus Garden and Kanabuchs. Don’t ever miss the chance to take the Underground River and Honda Bay tours!

BORACAY TIP- there are absolutely so many places to stay in Boracay. You can definitely head for Boracay without any reservation. The price range airconditioned to fan rooms vary, but there are literally more than one hundred smaller inns in Boracay, so never fear, there will be space somewhere!

When in Puerto Princessa, dining at Ka Lui is definitely a must-try. However, reservation is a must. Head to Divine Sweets after the sumptuous dinner at Ka Lui so you can try their coffee and desserts. ๐Ÿ™‚

When in Cavite, try to eat in one of the carinderias in Mahogany Market. dont forget to order bulalo; tasty and inexpensive.

in Baguio, several elderly sell strawberries outside the ukay ukay area. their strawberries are delicious and not only is it cheaper but you also help them (i think they are tribes but am not sure which one). also, halfway to the Lourdes statue, there are several stalls that sell silver accessories.

dont forget to eat at Kinabutch in Puerto Prinsesa. loved their seafood. also, try their exotic food. buy your pasalubong in their market. very cheap compared to other souvenir shops.

    Palawan:
We just had our trip to Palawan last March. I recommend you to try out these restaurants: Kinabuch’s and Ka Lui’s. Before going to Ka Lui’s, please call them first since you need to reserve a table. As for Kinabuch’s, you should try their exotic food (the wood worm). The wood worm should not be eaten when you’re stomach is still empty. You should also try chao long (vietnamese soup) in one of the eateries there in Puerto Princesa.

One thing you may try doing in Puerto Princesa is firefly watching along Iwahig River after your city tour. Other activities that you may do here are: Honday Bay island hopping, Puerto Princessa Subterranean river cruise, dolphin watching, and a lot more.

If you’re buying pasalubong for your family and friends, ask the tricycle driver to take you to the tiangge where you could buy accessories with pearls, shirts, bags, and more. If you want something special, you can buy crinkles and hopia at Baker’s Hill. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Mall of Asia:
You may want to try bungee fun where you can jump on a trampoline for 3 minutes. ๐Ÿ˜€ At the bayside of Mall of Asia, you can also watch the sunset and take photos of it. If you like to watch a movie, there’s an IMAX theater in Mall of Asia.

    Boracay:
If you’re a first-timer in Boracay, you should not miss island hopping and snorkeling. You should also enjoy the night life in Boracay. Also, you should not miss to have a group picture with the sand castles in the background.

    Batangas:
When going to Batangas, you should eat special lomi and bulalo in one of the eateries there. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Davao:
I suggest that you try at eating at Lachi’s. You may also take home with you a box of sans rival. ๐Ÿ™‚ If you’re more fond of fruits, just go to the market and buy some pomelo and durian.

    Baguio:
Make sure to take home with you Good Shepherd products such as peanut brittle, ube, and strawberry jam.
