[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online
[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.
I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in April 2013. This is geared towards applicants who holds a Philippine passport, though the preparation can be applied for other nationalities as well. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that I can’t answer all your questions. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.
After almost seven years, I finally have an update to my now epic How to Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa series. I have written two posts on the topic, both garnering over a thousand comments, with one getting over 4,500! I have stopped replying to comments, since I don’t think I’m not the best person to be talking about it, as my knowledge of the visa process is largely obsolete, so the visitors have taken upon themselves to answer each other’s questions, with successful applicants coming back to share their good news and help others. It has become a mini forum of sorts and I have to admit I’m happy it turned out that way. I found it to be a great help when I took another chance to apply for an Australian tourist visa once more.
Before I get to the visa application process, here’s some background about me and my circumstances: I am a Philippine passport holder, and have applied and received a visa from Australia before. I have a valid US Visa, with used tourist visas to Canada, Japan, and Myanmar. I also have more than 70 arrival and departure stamps from various countries, and that’s just in one passport. I am single and have my own company registered with the DTI. I have a bank account and a couple of credit cards, and I have two sisters who live in Australia, one of which is a temporary resident and the other a citizen. My intention to visit was for a short break from life in Manila, and to hopefully visit places I missed during my first two trips to the Australia.
Step 1: Download and read the necessary pages, documents, and forms.
This is very important, I can’t stress that enough. It won’t do to just ask questions without reading these web pages and documents first, because you’ll look like an idiot. Majority of your questions would likely be answered by the information written in these files. All these are available for download at the Australian Immigration website, immi.gov.au, and they are all free.

There is no need to print all of those pages or forms (unless you prefer to read them off the computer), but the one thing you should print is the visa application form. It’s a fillable form, wherein you can type in your answers on the form itself and print it afterwards. If you use Adobe Reader to open it, it will not save the changes to the form, so fill it out only when you are ready to print and submit. However, if you’re using Foxit PDF Reader, it can save the changes to the form, so you can fill it out and edit it later on before printing.
Step 2: Gather the required documents
Page 15 of Form 1419, Part M is actually an application check list. The column on the left lists all the required documents, while the column on the right lists the additional documents you may submit.
Here are the documents I submitted:
- Certified true copy of the identity page and pages with visa stamps of my valid passport
- Recent passport photo taken within the last six months
- Visa application charge in manager’s or cashier’s check
The Australian embassy do not affix visa labels anymore, so there’s no need to send your passport when you apply, unless you specify that you want a visa label. I would have done this, but the label costs AU$70.
Step 3: Gather your supporting documents
Here are the supporting documents I submitted. Remember that this vary depending on your circumstance. You’re not required to submit all of these, but it is advised that you submit as much supporting documents as you can to prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, and that you have a strong reason to come back to the Philippines.
- Birth certificate printed on security paper
- Certified true copy of my DTI Registration
- Certified true copy of my BIR Registration (Form 2303)
- Certified true copy of my Income Tax Return (From 1701)
- Certified true copy of the invitation letter from my sister
- Certified true copy of my sister’s pay slip
- Certified true copy of my sister’s passport bio page and employee ID
- NBI Clearance
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Itinerary
The Australian immigration require that all photocopied documents you submit are certified true copies. You can do this by going to the Notary Public.
If you look at the form, it doesn’t list the birth certificate as part of the documents needed. I included it anyway, since I have an extra copy. Also, when I called to have my document picked up, they mentioned something about the NSO and I asked if I still need to get another since I already have a SECPA copy. They said I can include my copy instead of getting a new one.

The NBI clearance isn’t really required either, but I included it since I have it anyway. I got it because it was required in the previous form, 48R. A medical isn’t required, but you may be required to get one if you are applying for a 6-month visa, or if you’re over 75 years old. The medical is only done through accredited clinics. From what I understand, you have to submit your application and use the reference code the embassy will give you when you go for your medical.
I also included a cover letter [Download sample of intent letter] explaining the purpose of my trip and that I wish to get a multiple-entry visa, since I want to make a side trip to New Zealand. This isn’t really necessary, since the form now asks for your trip’s purpose. You are also asked to provide an itinerary of your trip, though you are not required nor advised to make any bookings until your visa is approved.
Step 4: Buy a manager’s check for the visa fee
The visa fee is AU$115, which is Php 5,100, based on the conversion rate at the time. Please double check the fees and the conversion rate, as this can change anytime. I bought my manager’s check from BDO, since I have an account there. Based on the comments in the previous blog posts, there are banks that would not let you buy a manager’s check if you don’t have an account with them. Best to call and inquire with the banks in your area if they’ll let you buy a manager’s check from them even if you don’t have an account.
Step 5: Lodge your application

You don’t have to go to the embassy to submit your application. There are two ways to submit: you can either call the embassy hotline and have them pick up your documents or submit them in person at the VIA Center.
I opted to go with the call center, since it was summer and don’t want to be away for too long from my electric fan. Calling the hotline costs Php 32 per minute, not including the charges from your network provider, if you are calling from a mobile phone. My phone call took about 10 minutes (which included a long wait for them to finish a spiel, and another wait for an operator to be available), and cost me Php 339.29. If you’re going this route, listen closely at the start of the spiel, because there is an option to skip that and go directly to request for a pick up.
The courier fee for Metro Manila is Php 320, paid directly to the messenger who will pick up your documents. This fee covers both pick up and delivery after your application as been processed.
VIA Center have offices in Makati and Cebu.
Step 6: Wait for your visa
Visa processing takes about ten days all the way to 30 days. I called to have my documents picked up on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. It was almost 5pm when I called, and was told that they have already reached the quota for pick up the follwing day. My documents were picked up on Thursday, April 4. I received a text from the embassy that my documents were received on Monday, April 8.
By the third week of April, I was wondering what’s happening to my application. Someone who commented on my previous post said her application was received around the same time and she already has her visa. I started worrying when someone who submitted a week after I did said she already got her visa grant. That’s when I also found out that the embassy conducts phone interviews.
Apparently, they don’t do this to all applicants, only for those they feel they need to clarify certain answers to the application form. Worry changed to distress when I missed not one, but FOUR calls from the embassy. The first call was to our house phone, and my sister gave them my mobile number since I was out of the house. The first call to my mobile came while I was struggling to get off a packed LRT, so I had to cancel it. The next two came when the phone was in silent mode because I was at an event. You can just imagine how frantic I was.
I ended up calling the number, but it was the consulate’s trunkline number. I was told to just call the visa information number (845 9200). Because I do not know how to follow instructions, I called the hotline instead, and was told to send them an e-mail, which can be found on the immigration website. I sent an e-mail using the contact form there, and did not receive any response.
On May 7, just a day shy of one month since they received my documents, I called the hotline again, after getting no response or call from the embassy. The operator took pity and gave me a number to contact, which is the consulate hotline. I wasn’t able to talk to anybody, but I did get an e-mail address. I sent another e-mail, which again did not receive any response.
I finally got a text on May 14 that my documents have been dispatched to the courier for delivery. It did not mention if my visa was granted or not. My documents came the following day, and I was so relieved that my application was granted. It wasn’t a multiple entry visa, as I was hoping for. The visa was granted on May 10, and since it was a long weekend, it wasn’t dispatched until after election day.
Unlike before, the embassy not just issue visa grant letters for tourists. You need to bring this when you leave Manila, as the local immigration would ask for your visa before they stamp you out of the country. Also, instead of having a one-year validity, my Australian tourist visa is only valid until November 2013.

Ung form na Partner Subclass 309/100 ay para sa mga married couple or in a de facto relationship then ung form na Prospective Marriage Visa Subclass 300 this visa allows you to enter Australia and marry your intended fiancé within the visa’s nine month validity period.

For q16, just answer no.:) Kase we don’t have identity card here in PI in some countries meron. For q19, i haven’t encountered that question updated na ulit ung form. I think u can answer like u r a permanent resident or a citizen of ur current location.

hello, nag bayad ka pa ba para sa processing fee na 700 pesos bukod sa 320pesos sa air 21?yung una ko kc, sa via c enter ako lodge, i paid 700 sa via center plus yung MC ( 5.100)
Wala npo ako binayadan.320 lang po sa Air21. Un ata 700 eh parasa handling fee ng Via. Pero need mo muna tumawag sa call center para masjed ka ng pag pick up ng docs/ application mo.

Hello all. I just wanna share my story in the hope na matulungan niyo kami of which approach should be best for my boyfriend to get me in AU. Firstly, I havent been to any country but PH. Also wala akong trabaho nor a student. I also dont have a bank acct. I am a little doubtful lang in applying a TV coz hindi maalis sa isip ko na baka hindi magrant. We are planning to get a help from an agency but when I started reading this forum I get the impression na pupwede naman palang Ill do it myself na lang thru VIA. I have so many questions in my mind and surfing the net just make all things confusing. I hope u could offer help/answers to these queries that has been bothering me. (1) Ano-ano ho ba ang mga docs or requirements ang kinakailangan kong masupply? (2) Kung sakali ho bang may stamp na No Further Stay ang passport, kinakailangan ho bang umuwi dito sa Pinas? I mean, cant it be renewed or processed there in AU, or perhaps ask the Embassy to give u an extension period? (3) I also learned na hindi pwedeng magwork if u are only a tourist, but what if during ur 3-6 mos stay dun, you are able to find a job or by any chance a friend of you a possible job, hindi ho ba pwedeng mag apply ng Work Visa para hindi ka na lang bumalik ng Pinas? (These are just the primary questions in my mind that I d like to have right and legal answers.) Patulong po at maraming maraming salamat.
once tourist visa inaaplyan mo, YOU ARE NOT allowed to work po.. No STUDY. and no further stay. meron man mag waive para maka extend is because reason nila is really nice ( medical for exmaple)

Salamat marie. Additional question lang ho, is it still 5,100 for the visa charge? Confused lang kasi according the au immigration website, 115 AUD lang ang babayaran eh di naman 5,100 ang equivalent sa peso. Ano ho ipalagay ko sa check? 5100php or 115AUD? Wala ho akong bank account, may alam din ho ba kayo kung saang banko ako pwedeng magpurchase ng MC? Please reply. Thanks much. :)))

hello, im not sure kung san pwde makabili ng Mc pag walang sariling bank accunt. pero yun iba daw, ( DAW) kung may kilala ka na may bank account, pwde mo cya isama para magawan ka ng MC…ako kc, wala din ako BA, pero napilitin ako mag open sa BPI tapos dun na lng transfer ni BF yung padala nya para sa mga bayarin ko dsito..

Hi Amber, base on my experienced all I submitted is bank statement of my sponsor. but if you have money in the bank of your own I think you can submit it too for another supporting documents. good luck sa application mo and make a intent letter whats your purpose in visiting Au and then make sure you have to come back before you visa expire… be possitive..

hello raine.no thats not true…base of my experience i fly to oz, december 6,.din bumalik ako sa atin march 5.. kasi sa march 6 yung expiration nang tv ko… kaya umowi ako by 5… example pumunta ka sa oz, dec 13, so dapat bumalik ka sa pinas, march 12… yan lang sis..now i just had my tv twice granted…

Hello Raine, base on my experienced, I been to Au, twice and now I am holding another 3 months visa. on my firts 2 visit, nilubos lubos ko ang 3 months, for example depart ako oct 8 balik ko sa pinas is jan 6. so 3 months talaga, because you have to be in the Phils before visa will expire… saan ka sa au? sa melbourne ako, gusto nga ni f fly agad but its very cold there now its winter. I was experiencing that when the seocnd time i was there sakit kaya ng katawan sa lamig. he might come here for a week then we fly together back to Au. have a safe trip, God Bless…
Hi mojs salamat sa reply, sa melbourne din ako sa victoria, nung first visit ko winter din aobrang lamig at sinakto oo rin ung 3 mos kaya nagtataka akonsa friend ko about 2 weeks before mahirap n lg mkipagtalo haha kaya nag ask n lng ako dito for other opinion. Anyway next month punta ako ulit sa oz sept 12 then balik ko dec 11. Pangalawang approved n ng visa ko ito although itong pang second 6mos inaaplayan ko pero 3 mos lng binigay skin. Hello guys, I got my first tv grant last August 1. I lodge my application July 17 and it took 14 days to process. Nag email ako sa kanila once and then they reply to my email and giving me IRIS I’d no. To use to my next email, so I emailed again using that number, a day after they called me for an interview, sobrang kaba nararamdaman ko nun, I was wondering why they called me because as far as I know there no interview in tv. But the tension was gone after I received the message from them saying that my tv application has been processed and ready to pick up at the via centre… Sososososo happy guys I can’t wait to get there and saying my first g’day

Ah, ano reason nila for your refusal if you don’t mind po? Mostly ng mga nbabasa kong post dto it takes a while before marelease ang result ng mga visa nila. Hopefully grant result n matanggap ntin in the next few mays. Think positive po, goodluck sa ating lhat.
Insufficient docs daw. Wala daw aq nabanggit na pamilya na babalikan kaya un. Frustrated ako nung una. Natakot na nga ako ngayon. Kabadong kabado nako ngayon.

Cguro nga.. I was shattered pag open ko ng envelope at nabasa ko ung decision. I have work naman din na babalikan kaso hindi daw sapat.Ngayong second time humingi nko ng letter sa employer ko pati sa family members ko na nagsasabi na uuwi ako. I applied for a 3-month Tourist Visa. I submitted the basic requirements and my boyfriend whom i addressed as my friend, submitted his stat. Letter of invitation, ids, credit card and savings account (with his pay record), house documents and our photos together and previous flights together, all were signed and noted by a Justice of Peace. I have submitted my COE and approved leave of absence from my brother who is the owner of our business (Family business). I have known him since January and we have been to 3trips abroad together already. Do you think that’s enough proof? As well as enough reason to convince the embassy that i will be coming back here? In my letter of invitation he also included the date he prefers me to arrive and leave OZ and gave his assurance i will come back here in the PH. Would appreciate your thoughts guys! Thanks! xx

Seeing you are both financially secured, you have nothing to worry about. Long as you have a strong reason to comeback ei. strong family ties , you won’t go wrong. As for me, I have a daughter to comeback to . So we are on the same boat, same with Amber who lodged her application last July 30. Have faith , god is good!

Thank you! I didn’t provide any bank account nor payslips since he is sponsing me all the way and covering everything. Do you think my COE, approved LOA and assurance from him that I’m coming back is enough proof? I also indicated in my cover letter that I don’t have any intention in staying in OZ and that my livelihood and all of my family are here. What do you think? Waaah I’m paranoid and getting crazy! Yes sis i enclosed some family pics. Pero wala hindi pa din tinaggap. Dun sa intent letter na sinama ko sa application ko ninobela ko na ang buhay namin pati ung father ko na may sakit. Hopefully naman they will consider it.. I am silently praying na grant na this time. I felt so devastated the last time. Pati bf ko. Pero we have plan B in case na hindi pa din grant. The result is outa our hands now. We can only hope for the best. So i’ll keep prying for us na naghihintay ng result. God will giv us what we deserve naman di ba.. May God bless us all..

Oo sis , ako mismo ang naglodge sa Via tsaka he indicated that he will be shouldering all my expenses plus accommodation, also, a friend of him that will stand as secondary sponsor just in case any need arise.
I attached his employment contract , payslips etc tsaka may pics dn kmi during his visit plus fotos of my family po.

Hi I understand the process of obtaining a visa from phils to oz but some of the questions on the form 1419 I feel I need to be careful what to answer. Im unemployed at the moment and so its a little harder for me I feel. I have a friend to offer support and assistance etc over in oz. Would you be willing to show me your completed form 1419 so I can see what you wrote as your answers obviously leaving out your personal info. thx

try mo to check online sis, f may tcaking no kaba for air 21, check mo f via center ka naman nagsubmit, may reference no ibingay sayo righ, tapos punta ka website nila tapos itract mo.. dw sis, nareceive na ng oz embassy ung docs application mo.. may iba ngah dito they did’nt recive a txt or email tapos, biglang nalang cila nakatangap nang visa grnt notice.. sis ako unemployed ako ii was granted tv twice…

hi rore my instruction kung paano mag kuha ng ecensus online, i choose option 1 which is i filled up the forms and then they will send acknowledgement request number sa email mo at i print mo 2 copies, bring to the bank when you pay at ny BDO branches nationwide, I paid 315 per page for bc and i think cenomar is a little bit more 415 yata yun. easy lang rose. now i am going to call the cebu clinic for appointment kc malayo sa amin d2 me sa mindanao, para pagdating ko doon nasa list na ang name ko. kc 12nn ang flight for cebu be there mga 2pm na for sure. ma trafic pa. hello dhenji gud afternoon ,they will inform you if in case hawak na nila mga docs mo, mag te text sila sayo siguro by monday, may msge kana galing sa kanila….important talaga yung intent letter dhenji, depende cguro if you’re sponsor very strong… bf mo ba nag invite sayo? wag kang mag alala just pray . @ shn this july spouse, pmv is 120.000 pesos na, but to make sure you have to call via centre they will inform you naman.and i did not submit any bank statement on mine except when i applied for tv visa para for sue ma grant sya.

Congrats sis,,sana skin granted din. My docs was dispatched aug 15 by the embassy…but until now, hindi ko pa narereceive. I called the courier air21 yesterday, and they said it will be delivered by Monday p. Hays, hoping that it will be good news after all the hassles. Thanks and godbless you…goodluck to everyone of us.
Sis hindi pa din nadeliver ng air21? Hassle naman ang courier na yan. Ung sken nagreply na ang embassy ina assess na daw ung application ko. Kelan kaya mapa finalize un. Nagkakasakit nko kakaisip eh. Need ko talaga mgtravel ng sept 6 if approved eh. Or kung refuse magle leave ang bf ko ng matagal sa work nya. Sana naman next week meron na. God Bless us all..

Tanong ko sana anong tamang visa ang applayan ko kung gusto kung manganak sa aus? Iam now 9 weeks pregnant and we wish (me & husband) that i would gave birth in Aus? Iam in tourist visa right now and i am on way back in Philippines this August.
We are also applying for spouse visa, correct me if iam wrong , Subclass 309 is the Partner -Provisional visa (subclass 309) which is the processing time is 6-8months?
1. counting by the spouse visa 6-8months, mahirap makipagsapalaran kung kailan lalabas ang result by then, am no longer allowed by the airlines to travel or will give birth in Philippines.
2. whats the best solution and visas for me to lodge aside from spouse visa?

Why not apply for a 3 months tourist visa when you are in your 4th or 5th month of your pregnancy. Just a thought lang po ah. But I guess, best to seek a professional advice when it comes to that matter..a bit complicated kc ung case mo. Goodluck sis .

Pwede kng magtaxi sis, pero ingat lng most of the taxi drivers…ay mpagsamantala. Pde ka ring magbus, ung MIA ang placard then tell the driver terminal1. Lakad ka nlng pababa, mkikita mo ung parking lot prok ka lng dun ung arrivng. You are not allowed to get inside unless nakalabas na ung susunduin mo. I got my visa result this arvo. Kinailangan ko pang imet half way ung courier kc dami alibi..kesyo d dw cla ppnta sa bayan nmn today. If I want dw, hintayin kong gumanda ang panahon then they will deliver my documents door to door. That’s why I decided to go and picked it myself. Thanks God, worth ang paghihintay…grant notice sis. My visa is valid for one year, multiple entry, walang no further stay condition. Hooray!!!God is good!

Nga pla, un po bang visa grant notice na dumating, un nb mismo ang ipapakita sa custom officials?? – yes. although they won’t bother coz they have computer records though, but you know, just to be safe, you may show it to the immigration officers.
