How to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa Online: A guide for Filipinos – Just Wandering

How to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa Online: A guide for Filipinos

Back in September, my sister in Australia told me over Viber that she’s considering asking our mother to spend New Year’s with them again in Melbourne, and asked me if I am willing to accompany our mother to Australia. Of course, I am!

I’ve heard from friends and read in the comments section of my previous visa application guides that Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online. Since I do not like the stress that Manila traffic brings, and I do like doing business online, this was very appealing to me.

Required Readings

Create an ImmiAccount

The first step in applying for an Australian tourist visa online is to create an ImmiAccount. To create an account, you will need a valid email address. Make sure that you type in your email address correctly, and that you use an email address you regularly check. The embassy will be communicating with you using this address, so make sure that you check this email address often.

Application Form

Once you have created an account, you can start an application. This is basically the online, fillable version of Form 1419, so there is no need for you to download the form, fill it out, and upload it.

You can start filling out the application form, even if you have not completed compiling your documents yet. Make sure that the information you put in the application form are the same as the information in the supporting documents that you are submitting.

If you have filled out the form, but are not ready to submit yet, click on the Save button. This saves your answers in their database, and once you log back in, you can see your application, check the entries, and make edits.

Once you are ready to submit your application and upload your supporting documents, click on Submit.

Application Fee

When you submit your application form, you will be prompted to pay the Australian tourist visa application fee. For online applications, the only way to pay is through credit cards. If you do not have a credit card, or access to a credit card, I read that you can use prepaid debit cards.

Your card will be charged AU$135 + credit card surcharge fee. Based on BPI’s foreign exchange rate at the time, I paid Php 4,547.26. If you are applying via courier or VFS, the fixed visa fee is Php 4,900, and you would still have to pay for the VFS fee, courier fee, and the fee for the manager’s check.

Supporting Documents

I made sure that all of my supporting documents are complete before I submitted my application and paid the fee. I created my ImmiAccount and filled out the form on September 20, but I didn’t submit until October 5.

As soon as my payment has cleared, I uploaded my scanned documents. The Australian Embassy sets a limit of 30 files for Visitor Visa online applications, and none of the files must be more than 5MB in size. To keep file sizes small, they recommend that you scan your documents at 96 dpi, and to not attach photos in Office document files, as this will increase the file size greatly.

SupportingDocuments

Since I know my documents will have more than 30 pages, I merged and grouped them together. Also, instead of submitting separate photo files, I created a collage on Photoshop and added captions. I saved them as Portable Document Files (optimized), and used a service like PDFMerge.com to merge the PDFs into one file.

Here are the documents that I submitted:

Passport Photo

They did not give any specifications for the photo file, so I just scanned my passport picture at 180 dpi and saved it as JPG.

Cover Letter

I wrote a letter addressed to the consul explaining the purpose of my trip, who will be sponsoring my trip, why I need a multiple entry visa, and the reason why I need to come back to the Philippines. I included the ways in which they can reach me, should they need to get in touch for an interview. I also mentioned that I will be traveling, and the dates when I will be out of the country.

The supporting documents I submitted corroborates the content of my cover letter, which means that I provided proof of the purpose of the trip, proof that my sponsor can afford to shoulder my trip, proof of my relationship with my sponsor, and proof of my activities and relationships in the Philippines.

Certified Identification Documents

This is a requirement of the embassy: a certified or notarized copy of my passport and birth certificate.

Letter of Invitation

In my previous applications, my sister would send me letters via mail, which I include with my documents. Since I am applying online, I told her to just email me, instead of writing a letter, which would have taken weeks.
Get $20 travel credit on Airbnb
In her email, she stated that she wants me to accompany our mother to Melbourne, and that she will provide our tickets, and that we have the option to stay at her house, or my other sister’s house. She also stated she wants us to have a short holiday in New Zealand.

Along with the email, I also included a scan of my mother’s passport and her visa grant letter (she has a 3-year multiple entry Australian tourist visa).

You can save the email as PDF by clicking on Print, and then selecting Save as PDF/Export as PDF in your browser or email client.

Sponsor Documents

Since my sister is my sponsor, I had her send me a copy of her passport bio page, as well as her last four payslips, as evidence that she has the capacity to shoulder the cost of our trip to Melbourne.

Business Registration

Since I am self-employed and have my own business, I included my business registration papers in lieu of a Certificate of Employment.

Income Tax Return

As evidence of my income, I attached my latest Income Tax Return, which was submitted to the BIR last April 2015.

Most Recent Credit Card Statement

I also stated in my application that I will be using my credit card as a way to pay for goods and services while in the country.

Bank Statements

I submitted the Statement of Account for the previous 3-6 months. I did not request for a Bank Certificate anymore.

Family Photos

This was comprised of photos of me and my two sisters when we holidayed together in Tasmania during my previous visit, photos of me with my sisters’ families in Melbourne, photos of me with my family in the Philippines, and photos of me with my friend Khursten when I visited her in Sydney in 2013, and when we traveled to Japan together in 2014.

Travel Plans in 2016

To show that I have strong reasons to come back to the Philippines after my trip to Australia, I included the plane tickets that I have already booked. Since one of my travel plans include accompanying my mother and aunt to their hometown in Sorsogon in 2016, I included a photo collage from our trip last summer with extended family members.

One of my close friends is also getting married next year, so I included a scan of their wedding invitation, photos of me and my close friend during our trip to Japan together last year, and a photo of me together with my friend and her fiancรฉ.

Current Passport Visas and Stamps

Since the application checklist includes evidence of previous travels, I scanned all the entry and exit stamps from my previous travels in my current passport.

Previous Passport Visas and Stamps

My last Australian tourist visa is under my old passport, so I included it as well. My old passport also has my other visas, which includes a used visa for Canada, China, and Schengen, as well as valid multiple entry visas for Japan and the United States. I also included the pages with entry and exit stamps from my trips between 2011 and 2013.

Acknowledgement

I submitted my application in the early morning of October 5. I received an acknowledgement immediately after. On October 6, the Immigration and Visa Office of the Australian Embassy Philippines sent me an email requiring me to fill out a short online questionnaire. The questionnaire is basically the Application Checklist. Luckily, I was still at home when the email came, so I was able to quickly respond to their request.

This is why it’s very important that you type your email address correctly, and why you should always check your email after submitting your application online.

Grant Notification

Almost immediately after I submitted my filled out questionnaire, I left the house to go to the airport. By the following day, I received an email again from the Immigration Office, this time saying that my visa has already been granted.

To summarize my timeline:
September 20 – Created ImmiAccount, started filling out application form
October 1 – Requested statement of account from banks, notarized documents
October 2 – Scanned documents and created PDF
October 5 – Submitted application, paid visa fee, attached supporting documents
October 6 – Submitted Immigration Manila’s online questionnaire
October 7 – Received Visa Grant Notice

I remember back in 2006, when I first applied for an Australian visitor visa, I also submitted around this time of the year, and was granted in just a matter of days — I received notification of my visa grant while on a trip as well! Maybe there’s something about October?

Do you need a sponsor or to have a family in Australia to visit? Absolutely not! Many applicants are just there to tour the country. If you are a tourist, or visiting for a specific purpose (e.g. watching the Australian Open), make sure to include documents pertaining to them (tickets, bookings, etc.) with your application.

This is based on my personal experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa online. I’ve already written down everything I know. Please feel free to share your experiences in the comments. I’ll do my best to answer your questions, but I can’t really answer if your situation is different from mine (e.g. no work, no bank statement, no previous travel, etc.) however, there’s bound to be someone who is in the same boat, who may be able to answer your question. The visa discussions in the comments of this blog can get quite lively.

How to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa (2013 Edition)

[EDIT October 22, 2015] Many in the comments both in this post and previous visa posts said that their application, even when lodged online took a month or more to get processed. I got really lucky with my application, and up until now, I don’t know why my application was granted so quickly. Is it because I said I was accompanying my 80-year old mother, because my sister is sponsoring me, because this is my third application, because I provided proof of my plans in 2016, or because I said I was going to watch the Australian Open?

Bear in mind that the Australian Embassy website that average processing time for a tourist visa is one month. To be safe, consider this as a minimum, rather than a maximum, and apply for a tourist visa as soon as you can, instead of waiting for the last minute and fretting over the long processing time as your flight date looms closer.

Yes, PDF sya. To do this, open the email, click on Print, and then select Save as PDF. Walang signature, but make sure na visible ang email address ng sender and email address mo.

What do you mean question of immigration? Lahat ng questions sa form sinagutan ko. Hindi sila tumawag sakin for interview. Yung questionnaire na pinadala ng Embassy sa Manila is basically this.

Hi po miss Nina, I was just wondering Kung may idea po kayo about the following scenario:

    Facts:
    Philippine passport holder
    Never travelled overseas before
    26 years old

    Intention:
Wanting to visit Australia for at least a month then head to US as a visitor for at least 6 months

    Question:
    1. Kailangan po bang mag apply ng two separate visas if that person wants to travel to Australia and US?
    2. Mas higher po ba yung probability na maggrant yung US visa pag that person has been granted an Australian visa ?

    Thank you po

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

      1. Yes, you need to apply for a visa for both countries, as they both require tourists to have a visa.
      2. It’s really hard to gauge one’s chances with visas. I’ve heard of well-traveled people getting denied. What’s important is that you are able to prove that you a) have the capability to afford to travel in their country for the amount of time you plan to stay there, and b) have a strong reason to exit their country when your visa is about to expire.

    Hi Ms Nina,

Can we use other credit card (eg: sponsor, sibling) if we don’t have any for the online application?

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

Hi Aaron, from what I’ve read, you can use another person’s credit card to make the payment. As I mentioned in the post, you can also use those prepaid credit/debit cards.

        Hi Ms Nina,

Thank you for the swift response.

I went through some pages and read that sponsor can also pay in behalf at any DIBP office. Heres the page: http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa/Fees/how-to-pay-for-an-application

I also read bank cheque is accepted.

But the quickest and hassle free is via credit/debit cards.

        Thanks again! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Ms Nina,

I have lodged my 3rd tourist visa application through online last Oct. 10. Then on Oct. 12, I received the same questionnaire as yours and filled it up. Until now the status of my application is “application received”. I’m just wondering if it’s meant to change to “processing” or whatever when they’re already assessing the application. Did your application status change before the grant of your visa?

    Thanks.

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

Hi, I wasn’t able to log back in to ImmiAccount to check on my application status because I was traveling. It completely slipped my mind, that’s why I was surprised when I received my visa grant notice. Maybe it’s a high volume week again, so they haven’ been able to update yet.

Submitted ours last September 21. Almost to a month now, we applied for a tourist visa and we have existing visas under US Canada Japan etc etc. I just wondered how come you received yours so quickly and I am so jealous ๐Ÿ™

  10. Johanna Avatar

Hi Nina, I have the same travel profile as yours–have my own business, frequent traveler with VIsas to the US, Schengen, China, complete financial documents, with letter of invitation from a friend who in an Australian Citizen. The only difference is this will be my first time to travel to Australia. Filed my visa application online on September 20, and submitted all necessary documents on September 21. I received an email regarding a survey and promptly answered it, but to this day, October 20, I have not received further communication from the Immigration Department. My intended travel date is in 4 days (October 24), and I’m already worried! Attempts to follow up through the webform and local embassy in Manila have led to nothing, as they told me to just wait. Any suggestions on how to properly follow up would be great. Thank you.

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

Oh man, that sucks ๐Ÿ™ maybe they’re taking a long time verifying some documents? Many of the commenters in my other visa posts said they had no choice but to rechedule their flight ๐Ÿ™

  11. Johanna Avatar

Oh no if that’s the only recourse, that would suck indeed ๐Ÿ™ Thanks for the comment! I still have four days of waiting left so will pray hard I get that email. I called the Australian Immigration Office (international number) just to make sure I didn’t miss any step and the officer said the process is pretty straightforward and that unless I get asked for more documents, the only thing I can do is wait. The normal processing time is 6-8 weeks (equivalent to 30 working days), so the officer kept saying the 5 weeks that I’ve been waiting is still within the standard processing time. I wish I’d known this before I finalized my flight bookings. I hope this information helps others though, so they are well-informed before booking flights. I thought 5 weeks would be a sure in already.

There’s no way to expedite the processing which is 30 days. Only hope is a consideration that they’ll grant your visa prior to your travel date. Since you’re a traveller, it should not really take that long for them to process it. Unless, they really wanna give a hard time ๐Ÿ™ Hope you’ll get granted soon. Good luck!

Hi Everyone! I just want to suggest for those visa applicants, never book your flights yet until your visa has been granted. The immigration doesn’t care whether you have plans on a certain date or not. Just submit your documents that are relevant to your applications based on the requirements of that type of visa. You can add more I.D’s or certificates to prove your identity and your capability to stay in their country. And that you are bonafide applicant and that will abide their laws. However, once you have submitted your application, all you have to do is to wait. That’s it. Make sure you check your email everyday and your phone is always available. Otherwise, you might missed their queries, if they need to, and your application will go back to the last que of their system and you will wait longer again. Another thing, just pray hard whilst waiting. Wala naman iba pupuntahan ang application kundi mabigyan ng magandang resulta. Always think positive.

    Hello Ms. Nina,

Just wondering Maam, I’m currently out of the country and my family and I are planning to go to Australia anytime soon, I asked a good friend of mine to facilitate the Visa processing since we are to busy to do so. My friend is asking me 9500 each for the processing, so I searched the net and end up here, and was surprised that it only cost less 5000. Don’t you think my friend is asking too much? Thanks in advance.

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

Your friend has likely included the incidental costs (getting NSO birth cert, manager’s cheque, bank certificate, notary fee, photocopy, etc.), as well as the cost of his/her time for coordinating with your family, gathering the documents, and submitting the visa.

If you want to save money, you would have to sacrifice your own time and do everything yourself

      1. Jed Anthony Gallos Avatar

I truly appreciate the quick response! The thing is at 1st we are not aware that we can actually apply an Australian tourist visa online, so all the documents needed are already prepared by us and was already handed to her. So basically she will just forward our docs. to the proper office. is it not? I don’t know, I was shocked after reading your blog and aftr actually vising the site and checking other infos.

      2. Nina Fuentes Avatar

If that’s the case then, that’s pretty pricey nga. Is she a travel agent? Maybe that’s their standard rate for visa processing? Other cost factor may include cost for calling for a documents pick up (if she’s going to have it picked up), cost for her time and transportation if submitting through the VFS, courier fee, etc. I suggest you discuss the rate she’s charging you with her, so you know what is covered with the add-on rate.

I’m getting frustrated… I get no answer from the embassy. Our travel was supposed to be on the 7th and was moved on the 18th. Sent them an email with the letter from the company that we’re visiting, but no answer at all! It says on their website to call the embassy for emergency visa, etc. I called, but they told me to call VFS. When I contacted VFS, they told me to call the embassy directly. This has been going on for almost 2 weeks now. They are so unhelpful. ๐Ÿ™

Thank you kay for your reply, I just submmited some of our documents yesterday and until this morning, anytime ba pwede kang mag add ng other supporrting docs kahit you already summited ? I had submmited about 28 files, I hope It’s good enough. And also keep a lot of praying, looking forward for granted visa. How many years na kayo ng partner mo in relationship? If you don’t mind. .

    You’re welcome Dolly xx
yes you can add more docs anytime. 2 years na kami pero 7 months total palang kmi live-in together here sa pinas kasi one month offshore work at one month onshore vacation , tapos nagsstay din sya sa oz ng 1-2weeks kasi ginagawa din nya ung house dun. kaya nag tv muna ako para makapagstay dun with him then if all good na ung 12-month relationship required for de facto, magaaply na kami. madalang lng naman ang refusal, most reason is no strong family ties especially if unemployed. kaya we both mentioned kung bakit unemployed ako., haha… busy din ako kya hnd ako nainip tho binibilang ko ung araw kasi magffollow up ako after 30 days. Good luck sa application mo and yes prayer helps.

    hi ms nina,

Passport and birth cert lang ipapanotarize?how about yung ibang documents?
kahit na online magaapply kailangan padin notarized ang isscan at isesend sakanila?

    Thank you!

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

Yup, in their list of requirements, those are the only two documents that they required to be certified. I applied online and had my passport photocopied and had it notarized. Same with my birth certificate.

Follow up question, nagbook na kmi ng plane ticket pero sa june 2016 pa flight(promo kasi), ok lang ba na this early mgapply na kme? And ok lang ba na icheck ko sa application form 12mons kahit single entry lang sa application form, or kahit ano (3mons or 6mons or 12mons) nalang icheck ko sa application form at sila na bahala maggrant?

        Thank you ulit. ๐Ÿ™‚

      2. Nina Fuentes Avatar

I have read an account online of tourists applying 6 months ahead of their trip. That’s advisable, because at least you have enough time to appeal or apply again if *knocks on wood* your application is denied.

Do you plan on staying for 12 months in Australia? You will be required to get a medical and probably submit a lot more documents to prove that you can fund your stay there and still have solid reasons to come back to the Philippines. If you only plan to stay a couple of days or weeks, a 3 month visa is enough. Visas are valid for one year — meaning if your visa is granted December 5, you can enter anytime between December 5 to December 4, and stay for up to three months.

7 days lang kame magstay i guess yung 3 mons nlng i check ko. Mejo nalito lang ako. Akala ko meaning nun kung ilang months validity ng visa. Thanks for enlightening me! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a bit confused and also pano kaya ang 2×2 pics ipapa scann? kasi di ba minsa mas malaki ang sixe kapag na iscanned na? I hope to hear from you , Thanks .

Hi nzgf82.. tanong ko lng sana during that you lodged your visa ilang months bago maexpired passport nyo po? ..kasi ang akin i lodged my visa but my passport will be expired 3months after..ang sayo po? kelan?thanks

      1. nzgf82 Avatar

Oct.2016 pa mag expire passport ko pero sa March pa kc punta ko sa Oz kaya nag renew nlng ako.To update ur passport details u need to submit filled-out form 929,bio page of ur old and new passport and ur visa grant notice ipapa scan mo pla ung form 929 and bio page ng old and new passport mo send them to immigration.manila@dfat.gov.au.Di pa ako nag sudmit kc sa Jan.ko pa makukuha passport ko tska pwede mo naman e check ang visa mo sa website para malaman mo rin kung na update na nila ung passport mo.

      2. nzgf82 Avatar

1 week after u submitted them..You can check ur visa record through VEVO /Visa Entitlement Verification Online just enter ur new passport number, visa grant number and Birth date. You will know namn if na update na nila kc pag enter mo ng new passport mo at invalid ibig sabihin di pa nila na update.

    Hi Ms nina!

Question lang po, bakit nung nag submit ako online hindi naman ako nirequire ng photograph? kakasubmit ko lng po ngayon Dec 15.

    Thanks

    1. Nina Fuentes Avatar

Which photo are you referring to? The passport photo is required, while the photos with my family and friends are not. They are part of my supporting documents to prove that I have a relationship with my sponsors in Australia, and also with my friend who is getting married next year (the primary reason for my return to the Philippines after my trip).

      1. pat Avatar

eto lang po yung nirequire na documents para iattach ko. hinahanap ko yung passport photograph yung tulad sa application nyo. hmmm

        Travel Document
        ? Passport
        Travel history, Evidence of
Entry/exit stamped pages of the current passport/old passport
Financial Capacity – Personal, Evidence of
        ? Bank Statement – Personal
        Birth or Age, Evidence of
        Birth Certificate
Work Experience – Overseas, Evidence of
        Letter/Statement – Business/Employer
        Employment Contract
        Assets – Personal, Evidence of
        Title Deed

Pero kahit hindi ako nirequire nagsubmit padin po ako ng passport size photo, nagtaka lang ako bkit wala dun sa list ng attachment..
