[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online
[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.
I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in April 2013. This is geared towards applicants who holds a Philippine passport, though the preparation can be applied for other nationalities as well. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that I can’t answer all your questions. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.
After almost seven years, I finally have an update to my now epic How to Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa series. I have written two posts on the topic, both garnering over a thousand comments, with one getting over 4,500! I have stopped replying to comments, since I don’t think I’m not the best person to be talking about it, as my knowledge of the visa process is largely obsolete, so the visitors have taken upon themselves to answer each other’s questions, with successful applicants coming back to share their good news and help others. It has become a mini forum of sorts and I have to admit I’m happy it turned out that way. I found it to be a great help when I took another chance to apply for an Australian tourist visa once more.
Before I get to the visa application process, here’s some background about me and my circumstances: I am a Philippine passport holder, and have applied and received a visa from Australia before. I have a valid US Visa, with used tourist visas to Canada, Japan, and Myanmar. I also have more than 70 arrival and departure stamps from various countries, and that’s just in one passport. I am single and have my own company registered with the DTI. I have a bank account and a couple of credit cards, and I have two sisters who live in Australia, one of which is a temporary resident and the other a citizen. My intention to visit was for a short break from life in Manila, and to hopefully visit places I missed during my first two trips to the Australia.
Step 1: Download and read the necessary pages, documents, and forms.
This is very important, I can’t stress that enough. It won’t do to just ask questions without reading these web pages and documents first, because you’ll look like an idiot. Majority of your questions would likely be answered by the information written in these files. All these are available for download at the Australian Immigration website, immi.gov.au, and they are all free.

There is no need to print all of those pages or forms (unless you prefer to read them off the computer), but the one thing you should print is the visa application form. It’s a fillable form, wherein you can type in your answers on the form itself and print it afterwards. If you use Adobe Reader to open it, it will not save the changes to the form, so fill it out only when you are ready to print and submit. However, if you’re using Foxit PDF Reader, it can save the changes to the form, so you can fill it out and edit it later on before printing.
Step 2: Gather the required documents
Page 15 of Form 1419, Part M is actually an application check list. The column on the left lists all the required documents, while the column on the right lists the additional documents you may submit.
Here are the documents I submitted:
- Certified true copy of the identity page and pages with visa stamps of my valid passport
- Recent passport photo taken within the last six months
- Visa application charge in manager’s or cashier’s check
The Australian embassy do not affix visa labels anymore, so there’s no need to send your passport when you apply, unless you specify that you want a visa label. I would have done this, but the label costs AU$70.
Step 3: Gather your supporting documents
Here are the supporting documents I submitted. Remember that this vary depending on your circumstance. You’re not required to submit all of these, but it is advised that you submit as much supporting documents as you can to prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, and that you have a strong reason to come back to the Philippines.
- Birth certificate printed on security paper
- Certified true copy of my DTI Registration
- Certified true copy of my BIR Registration (Form 2303)
- Certified true copy of my Income Tax Return (From 1701)
- Certified true copy of the invitation letter from my sister
- Certified true copy of my sister’s pay slip
- Certified true copy of my sister’s passport bio page and employee ID
- NBI Clearance
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Itinerary
The Australian immigration require that all photocopied documents you submit are certified true copies. You can do this by going to the Notary Public.
If you look at the form, it doesn’t list the birth certificate as part of the documents needed. I included it anyway, since I have an extra copy. Also, when I called to have my document picked up, they mentioned something about the NSO and I asked if I still need to get another since I already have a SECPA copy. They said I can include my copy instead of getting a new one.

The NBI clearance isn’t really required either, but I included it since I have it anyway. I got it because it was required in the previous form, 48R. A medical isn’t required, but you may be required to get one if you are applying for a 6-month visa, or if you’re over 75 years old. The medical is only done through accredited clinics. From what I understand, you have to submit your application and use the reference code the embassy will give you when you go for your medical.
I also included a cover letter [Download sample of intent letter] explaining the purpose of my trip and that I wish to get a multiple-entry visa, since I want to make a side trip to New Zealand. This isn’t really necessary, since the form now asks for your trip’s purpose. You are also asked to provide an itinerary of your trip, though you are not required nor advised to make any bookings until your visa is approved.
Step 4: Buy a manager’s check for the visa fee
The visa fee is AU$115, which is Php 5,100, based on the conversion rate at the time. Please double check the fees and the conversion rate, as this can change anytime. I bought my manager’s check from BDO, since I have an account there. Based on the comments in the previous blog posts, there are banks that would not let you buy a manager’s check if you don’t have an account with them. Best to call and inquire with the banks in your area if they’ll let you buy a manager’s check from them even if you don’t have an account.
Step 5: Lodge your application

You don’t have to go to the embassy to submit your application. There are two ways to submit: you can either call the embassy hotline and have them pick up your documents or submit them in person at the VIA Center.
I opted to go with the call center, since it was summer and don’t want to be away for too long from my electric fan. Calling the hotline costs Php 32 per minute, not including the charges from your network provider, if you are calling from a mobile phone. My phone call took about 10 minutes (which included a long wait for them to finish a spiel, and another wait for an operator to be available), and cost me Php 339.29. If you’re going this route, listen closely at the start of the spiel, because there is an option to skip that and go directly to request for a pick up.
The courier fee for Metro Manila is Php 320, paid directly to the messenger who will pick up your documents. This fee covers both pick up and delivery after your application as been processed.
VIA Center have offices in Makati and Cebu.
Step 6: Wait for your visa
Visa processing takes about ten days all the way to 30 days. I called to have my documents picked up on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. It was almost 5pm when I called, and was told that they have already reached the quota for pick up the follwing day. My documents were picked up on Thursday, April 4. I received a text from the embassy that my documents were received on Monday, April 8.
By the third week of April, I was wondering what’s happening to my application. Someone who commented on my previous post said her application was received around the same time and she already has her visa. I started worrying when someone who submitted a week after I did said she already got her visa grant. That’s when I also found out that the embassy conducts phone interviews.
Apparently, they don’t do this to all applicants, only for those they feel they need to clarify certain answers to the application form. Worry changed to distress when I missed not one, but FOUR calls from the embassy. The first call was to our house phone, and my sister gave them my mobile number since I was out of the house. The first call to my mobile came while I was struggling to get off a packed LRT, so I had to cancel it. The next two came when the phone was in silent mode because I was at an event. You can just imagine how frantic I was.
I ended up calling the number, but it was the consulate’s trunkline number. I was told to just call the visa information number (845 9200). Because I do not know how to follow instructions, I called the hotline instead, and was told to send them an e-mail, which can be found on the immigration website. I sent an e-mail using the contact form there, and did not receive any response.
On May 7, just a day shy of one month since they received my documents, I called the hotline again, after getting no response or call from the embassy. The operator took pity and gave me a number to contact, which is the consulate hotline. I wasn’t able to talk to anybody, but I did get an e-mail address. I sent another e-mail, which again did not receive any response.
I finally got a text on May 14 that my documents have been dispatched to the courier for delivery. It did not mention if my visa was granted or not. My documents came the following day, and I was so relieved that my application was granted. It wasn’t a multiple entry visa, as I was hoping for. The visa was granted on May 10, and since it was a long weekend, it wasn’t dispatched until after election day.
Unlike before, the embassy not just issue visa grant letters for tourists. You need to bring this when you leave Manila, as the local immigration would ask for your visa before they stamp you out of the country. Also, instead of having a one-year validity, my Australian tourist visa is only valid until November 2013.

Hi Mika , if youre far from Manila or Cebu, the best option is to lodge your application thru VFS by courier. And yes you need two MC , one for payment for TV and one for visa services to VFS. First, you need to call vfs and booked for pick up. 2go is their accredited courier. Prepare mo lng documents in a brown envelope. I did the same thing, lodged my tv app last June 4, 2015 , visa granted June 26.

Yes 4th time kana puro multiple entry ko. Tas nag apply ulit ako. Meron akong property and business pero hindi ko siya sinasubmit kasi ung unang application ko wala nman akong sinunmit na ganun ung land tittle lang and ung family ties ko. Tyaka sponsor nman ako ng bf ko kaya wala akong sinubmit so far ok naman. Pero kung meron ka mag submit kana lang po if meron para sure din. I am planning to apply visa as well kaso in my case di pa kami ng meet since ayaw pumunta ng sponsor ko here kase pagod siya sa work and time frame schedule nya is impossible sobrang busy even on holidays kaya no time to travel.. so it means may sudden changes on everything, I mean may nadagdag bang mga requirements needs… etc? hello @md ask ko lang sana kung ano ba ang ginagamit ng embassy na pang call is it landline or cp number kasi nag lodge ako ng application ko sa vfs nung june 18 and then ilang oras pagkapasa ko ng documents nagtxt sakin ang vfs na being processed na ang documents ko sa australia visa application center and then kinabukasan june 19 at 7:59am nag txt ulit sakin and sinabi na has been received at the australian embassy ang papers ko.and then at 12:20pm may na missed akong call ito ang number 8993639181111111 hindi ko nasagot and nang tinatawagan ko ang sabi ng operator ay cannot be completed as dial please check the number and dial again.sis pano ko ba malalaman kung sa embassy ung tumawag sakin?d ko alam kung saan ako tatawag or magtatanong.kasi up to now im waiting for my visa.thanks for your reply in advance.

Hindi ung experience mo is same of what i experience. Before nung naka tanggap ako ng tawag from embassy 02 ung lumalabas na number im not sure if sa embassy galing un calls na missed call sayo. To make sure. Email ka sa vfs for the status sumasagot naman agad sa email para alam mo kung ano ung status..

Well not necessary to buy ticket till your visa granted . My own risk.nman .just to make sure genuine un relation m sa sponsor mo just gather more e evidence to show .hope it helps.

Sa mga sisters na nag apply thru courier, ask ko lang po, pag pick up ba ng 2GO sa mga documents nyo nag e issue po ba sila nang receipts? sino po ba ang magbibigay ng acknowledgement sa binayad nating fees? mag aaply palang po ako, malayo po ako sa manila kaya thru courier nalang siguro ako. sana po may makasagot sa akin… GOD bless po.
When you give your documents to the 2Go representative, the envelope with your documents must already be sealed. The receipt they will issue you is for the payment of the courier service, which also acts as the acknowledgement that they have picked up your documents for delivery to the embassy.

Jessica ung nakalagay na name sa grant notice na nakuha ko.. Oo as in 1 day lang ganito din dati ung last year na nag apply ako. Sa mga nabasa ko kasi dto halos lahat 1 month mahigit wala pa kaya naisip ko baka nag bago na kaya di ko din inexpect na pareho ng dati. Oo nag make sure talaga ako na ok ung mga pinasa ko basta nag basa basa lang ako sa mga comments dto ung sa mga granted tas ganun lang din ang ginawa ko. Ung mga nakaraang apply ko nga mas maganda pa para sakin ang VFS kasi na eemail natatawagan ung sa VIA pa dati grabe ang hirap tawagan tapos wala pa silang access ng mga text and email ang only way lang na pag bibigay ng visa sayo is ung ipapadala sa courier ung papel kung grant o hindi or pipick up ung document sa VIA noon. For me mas maganda ang VFS ngaun para pag handle ng application.
Ung 1 month pala un lang ang time table nila pwedeng mabalis or mapatagal depende sa case ng applicant not pala na 1 month before sila mag decide.

No need show money if you have sponsor kasi i was granted my tourist visa a multiple entry without showing any bank account ung sa sponsor ko lang. Make sure lang na ma convince mo ang immigration na babalik ka sa pinas at ung intent mo lang is a tourist. Show money is not guarantee na magrant ang visa mo o mabibigyan ka ng visa.

No need na pa notarized ung mga papers mo kailangan lang xerox copy ng mga documents like nbi and nso wag ung original kasi sa VFS hindi nila tanggap ung original copy kung ipapa xerox mo pa dun ang mahal ng bayad. Kailangan dala mo lahat ng documents mo copy nalang ung original lang is ung application form mo.
sa VFS ako nag apply I gave them my original NSO , NBI , COE, etc. haha pero hindi naman nila binalik at pinaxerox sakin 🙂 sabi nila okay na daw yon

Ok kung ganun! Siguro iba iba ung nag hahandle kasi if i noticed me mga number ung counter siguro ung nag hawak sayo eh iba sa napuntahan ko.. Sinasabi ko lang ung na experince ko to help with other. Kasi i got my visa on 1 day process baka maka tulong sa iba na halos umabos ng lampas isang buwan..

I lodged it june 17.. matagal rin pala.. but finally approved thank you Lord. ask ko lang kasi multiply and wala akong 8503, mag expire visa ko ng july 2016 .. pwede ba sa july 2016 na ako mag extend ng another 3 months? mag in-and-out nalang ako habang di pa expired ung visa

Wow Ms. MD ang bilis po ng processing ng papers mo. Sana pag nag lodge ako ganun din, last na apply ko Dec 2013 it took 5 days lang, hindi talaga umaabot ng one month unlike sa mga nababasa ko ngayon na umaabot for a month or so .

Late regestred kc live BC ng kiddoes ko kaya nahingan ng identity like baptismal ,school rec at hospital rec.

I’ve read on any blog and site about sa Tourist Visa even you has a stable job here sa Pinas there still no assurance na granted ka since pwede mo daw i ive up ang work mo pag nasa Australia ka na.. so we just need to prove na babalik tayo sa Pinas which is strong family ties na nandito lahat ang family mo then you have a genuine relation with them… may iba kase nabasa ko na kahit may work sila at ngpasa ng COE eh refused daw.. so better explained in the intent letter very well yung purpose to travel and be honest and show sincerity.. importante ang family pictures makakatulong pero dagdag chance din yung letter na na explain mo very well.

Yong certificate of employment ko hindi na nilagay if magkano salary ko at sa leave letter yong approval galing sa company. . If you have money in tour bank even 100k e grant na yon bsta yong sponsor mo completo lang documents at my pera din sa bank nila for show money also.Thanks a lot

Yes pwede ganyan ako ung bf ko me business siya meron siyang staff tapos un ang lagi niyang inuutusan mag padala ng pera. Ang ginagawa ko nag pagawa ako ng statutory declaration sakanya signed by JP in australia na ung taong inutusan niyang magpadala para sakin dahil busy siya sa work since he is ceo ng company. Ganun nalang gawin mo. Walang problema un mas mainam kung me statutory declaration stating ng reason why he need to ask someone on his behalf

MGC… ako gumawa ng invitation letter niya kase ng ask siya sa akin since he is busy so nung hiningi na nya eh di siya satisfied ewan ko ba yun or baka he wants a broad words to use since napansin nya na hindi daw tlga Autralian ang gumawa.. embarrassing tlga. napaka prangka tlga nila lol haha move on nlng.

Lagi aq one way ticket ,from pal FLYER to Ceb flyer all went well nman .at one thing if it happens to u,u could probably say u not sure when the exact date u returning if its sooner or not,ezpecially if wla ka namn NO FURTHER STAY , that means u can extend ur stay. Pero un nga sakin.mostly one way lng kahit nun bago at after aq nanganak dun no question. 🙂

Ask ko lang pagkatapos ma grant yong visa ano ang sunod na gagawin.. pupunta ba sa embassy? but my note sa akin na im not required to have a visa label placed into my passport. ibig bang sabihin no need ng mag pa stamp ng passport ako? thank you so much.
Hi shane.. Yes u dont need visa label. Just print or hve a copy of ur visa grant with u when u go to the airport.sometimes they ask to see ur visa but sometime they dont.cause automatically ur passport details is recorded along with ur visa grant details on their system when the immig officer check it. No need going to embassy 🙂

I applied for tourist visa (12months) at VFS Makati last june 16, 2015 together w/ my son (5years old), and unfortunately last july 13, 2015 got the result and it was refused by the embassy. My sister-in law and brother- in law was our sponsor and they are both citizen. The reason of our refusal was hndi dw cla satisfied and wala dw sila assurance na babalik kmi d2 sa pinas, nalagay q kc sa form,ung family members na hndi kasama magtravel australia is my husband which is nsa oman, hndi q nalagay parents q n nand2 sa pinas I thought kc asawa and anak lng ang ilalagay if ever.. Unemployed po aq pero lahat ng documents nila to proof na they can accommodate and pay for our living expenses during our stay there ay nasubmit qna man skanila. Ung Reason of our visit was to give assistance sa sister-in law ko who just gave birth nung july 9, 2015 on their first baby and at the same time for vacation nrin. And now po, I am planning to re apply online kc nand2 po aq sa province now, but this time ako nlng po kasi badly needed tlga nila na may mka2tulong pra sa baby nila.. Iniisip po nmin qng 3months or 6months ung iapply q pra may chance magrant agad.. Pero meron po ba kau advice to increase my chance of having a visa? Papa ko is nasa Saudi and dalawang kuya ay wala sa bahay since out of town ang work nya tapos yung isa may asawa na. pwede ba akong mg pagawa ng letter sa mama ko na naka sign nya and state nya ako yung makakasama nya? di ba ma question na wala yung papa ko dito at state ko nasa abroad siya. or whatsoever.. thank you

Hi Donna, I haven’t tried applying online, but I have friends who had, and did not encounter any problem. If you are not based in Manila or have limited time to spare, applying online is a great option.

As far as I know, the visas issued are for 3-month stay, and is valid for one year after issue (meaning you can travel to Australia within that validity period, and you can stay for up to 3 months).

Hi Kai, in response to ur concern..Yes you can enter oz by august before the date mentioned on ur visa,maybe a week or two weeks early.and extend for 3 months but expect for medical x-ray request.and extend again after ur first extended stay.but there is difference of the fee if u extend second time.it will triple the fee of ur first extend.first extend au 330 i think ,the second time will cost 1100 or so.
Hmm why not try apply for a different type of visa so u dont have to pay for extension and stay even longer?

Hi Kai hindi pa ako naka pag extend. Last thursday july 29. Punta kami sa department of immi here in Perth. Tiningnan nila documents ko . The bad news I used 601 form. The good news my visa expire Ausgust 30 the immi staff say. Kasi akala ko August 18 mag expire. Kay ang visa ko the date grant May 19… so I need to change the form that I used. Form 1419 I need to fill up. Then I change the date what date I need to extend. Maybe next week I apply. I will update here . Thanks a lot guys…

@Mercy, No need naman ng Visa label. kahit sa grant notice sinabi yan, na hindi required, basta may copy ka lang lagi.

Hello Mercy, if you travel on Tourist visa, no need na mag CFO but if your coming here and grant with fiance or spouse visa, yes sure need CFO STicker, hope it helps,

3 months muna and if ever gagawa ka ng intent letter dont put na pupunta ka ng australia na mag aalaga ka ng anak ng sister in law mo. Kung tourist visa ang aaply mo dapat tourist lang talaga holiday. Un nalang kasi meron ditong mga case like you na un ang reason why they are going to australia pero na refused. Basa ka muna ng mga comment and discussion dto complete lahat ng details na kailangan mo tyagain mo nalang.

Hi Donna honestly sa statutory declaration ilagay ng mag invite su na for holiday and at the same time give assistance to their newly born baby no problem with that.I think the reason I got refused was u applied for a 12mos visa and you applied with your kid.The embassy definitely would think di ka na babalik kc ksma mo anak mo.

Its my first time to post a comment here.. binasa ko from the very start and it took me 3 nights lng naman during on my free time at natapos ko din until this page. Ask ko lng mga sis, I have a sponsor and we’ve been talking together for 7 months na at kami na…postponed yung plan nya mg visit kase sobrang busy sa work and pagod na siya mgtravel so he asked me to research about the visa at good thing nahanap ko ang site na to.. so thankful! Guy I requested my sponsor lahat ng requirements needed..and hope granted even we haven’t met yet.. tanong ko lng may chance ba ma grant as long as complete and documents or reason of letter stating kng anu ang reason bat di siya nakapunta dito.. on my part, wala akong work. and no properties.. I was planning to enrol for culinary sana for 1 semester kaso sabi ng iba no assurance na granted kase even may work ka dito na babalikan its not enough how much more na babalik ka lng para mg aral. So the strong reason to return is the family ties.. na nandito lahat ang family mo at presentable and gandahan ang letter.. I hope that all will be fine and okay if ever mglodge na ako kase kabado talaga ako.. God is good and I know na magiging okay ang lahat.. hopefully. Kapit lng at wag mawalan ng pag-asa. 😉
Hi Claude.You have the invitation from your bf and docs needed for your Tv application so nothing to worry about khit unemplyod ka basta naka state sa invitation letter that he is willing to support you during your entire stay in Oz.

Thank you so much for the reply Lene.. yes I am single and no kids pa.. may chance ba? pwede mgtanong din, busy kase siya na tapos laging over time sa work so kadalasan pag ngpapadala siya ng pera under sa name ng kapatid nya nakikisuyo pag pumupunta ng city.. san ko ba pwede state yun sa intent letter or sa statutory declaration or sa both? kase marami2x din yun sa kapatid nya then sa kanya din sayang kase as a supporting documents ko din para sa resibo na continues yung padala nya lagi.
