[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online
[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.
I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in April 2013. This is geared towards applicants who holds a Philippine passport, though the preparation can be applied for other nationalities as well. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that I can’t answer all your questions. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.
After almost seven years, I finally have an update to my now epic How to Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa series. I have written two posts on the topic, both garnering over a thousand comments, with one getting over 4,500! I have stopped replying to comments, since I don’t think I’m not the best person to be talking about it, as my knowledge of the visa process is largely obsolete, so the visitors have taken upon themselves to answer each other’s questions, with successful applicants coming back to share their good news and help others. It has become a mini forum of sorts and I have to admit I’m happy it turned out that way. I found it to be a great help when I took another chance to apply for an Australian tourist visa once more.
Before I get to the visa application process, here’s some background about me and my circumstances: I am a Philippine passport holder, and have applied and received a visa from Australia before. I have a valid US Visa, with used tourist visas to Canada, Japan, and Myanmar. I also have more than 70 arrival and departure stamps from various countries, and that’s just in one passport. I am single and have my own company registered with the DTI. I have a bank account and a couple of credit cards, and I have two sisters who live in Australia, one of which is a temporary resident and the other a citizen. My intention to visit was for a short break from life in Manila, and to hopefully visit places I missed during my first two trips to the Australia.
Step 1: Download and read the necessary pages, documents, and forms.
This is very important, I can’t stress that enough. It won’t do to just ask questions without reading these web pages and documents first, because you’ll look like an idiot. Majority of your questions would likely be answered by the information written in these files. All these are available for download at the Australian Immigration website, immi.gov.au, and they are all free.

There is no need to print all of those pages or forms (unless you prefer to read them off the computer), but the one thing you should print is the visa application form. It’s a fillable form, wherein you can type in your answers on the form itself and print it afterwards. If you use Adobe Reader to open it, it will not save the changes to the form, so fill it out only when you are ready to print and submit. However, if you’re using Foxit PDF Reader, it can save the changes to the form, so you can fill it out and edit it later on before printing.
Step 2: Gather the required documents
Page 15 of Form 1419, Part M is actually an application check list. The column on the left lists all the required documents, while the column on the right lists the additional documents you may submit.
Here are the documents I submitted:
- Certified true copy of the identity page and pages with visa stamps of my valid passport
- Recent passport photo taken within the last six months
- Visa application charge in manager’s or cashier’s check
The Australian embassy do not affix visa labels anymore, so there’s no need to send your passport when you apply, unless you specify that you want a visa label. I would have done this, but the label costs AU$70.
Step 3: Gather your supporting documents
Here are the supporting documents I submitted. Remember that this vary depending on your circumstance. You’re not required to submit all of these, but it is advised that you submit as much supporting documents as you can to prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, and that you have a strong reason to come back to the Philippines.
- Birth certificate printed on security paper
- Certified true copy of my DTI Registration
- Certified true copy of my BIR Registration (Form 2303)
- Certified true copy of my Income Tax Return (From 1701)
- Certified true copy of the invitation letter from my sister
- Certified true copy of my sister’s pay slip
- Certified true copy of my sister’s passport bio page and employee ID
- NBI Clearance
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Itinerary
The Australian immigration require that all photocopied documents you submit are certified true copies. You can do this by going to the Notary Public.
If you look at the form, it doesn’t list the birth certificate as part of the documents needed. I included it anyway, since I have an extra copy. Also, when I called to have my document picked up, they mentioned something about the NSO and I asked if I still need to get another since I already have a SECPA copy. They said I can include my copy instead of getting a new one.

The NBI clearance isn’t really required either, but I included it since I have it anyway. I got it because it was required in the previous form, 48R. A medical isn’t required, but you may be required to get one if you are applying for a 6-month visa, or if you’re over 75 years old. The medical is only done through accredited clinics. From what I understand, you have to submit your application and use the reference code the embassy will give you when you go for your medical.
I also included a cover letter [Download sample of intent letter] explaining the purpose of my trip and that I wish to get a multiple-entry visa, since I want to make a side trip to New Zealand. This isn’t really necessary, since the form now asks for your trip’s purpose. You are also asked to provide an itinerary of your trip, though you are not required nor advised to make any bookings until your visa is approved.
Step 4: Buy a manager’s check for the visa fee
The visa fee is AU$115, which is Php 5,100, based on the conversion rate at the time. Please double check the fees and the conversion rate, as this can change anytime. I bought my manager’s check from BDO, since I have an account there. Based on the comments in the previous blog posts, there are banks that would not let you buy a manager’s check if you don’t have an account with them. Best to call and inquire with the banks in your area if they’ll let you buy a manager’s check from them even if you don’t have an account.
Step 5: Lodge your application

You don’t have to go to the embassy to submit your application. There are two ways to submit: you can either call the embassy hotline and have them pick up your documents or submit them in person at the VIA Center.
I opted to go with the call center, since it was summer and don’t want to be away for too long from my electric fan. Calling the hotline costs Php 32 per minute, not including the charges from your network provider, if you are calling from a mobile phone. My phone call took about 10 minutes (which included a long wait for them to finish a spiel, and another wait for an operator to be available), and cost me Php 339.29. If you’re going this route, listen closely at the start of the spiel, because there is an option to skip that and go directly to request for a pick up.
The courier fee for Metro Manila is Php 320, paid directly to the messenger who will pick up your documents. This fee covers both pick up and delivery after your application as been processed.
VIA Center have offices in Makati and Cebu.
Step 6: Wait for your visa
Visa processing takes about ten days all the way to 30 days. I called to have my documents picked up on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. It was almost 5pm when I called, and was told that they have already reached the quota for pick up the follwing day. My documents were picked up on Thursday, April 4. I received a text from the embassy that my documents were received on Monday, April 8.
By the third week of April, I was wondering what’s happening to my application. Someone who commented on my previous post said her application was received around the same time and she already has her visa. I started worrying when someone who submitted a week after I did said she already got her visa grant. That’s when I also found out that the embassy conducts phone interviews.
Apparently, they don’t do this to all applicants, only for those they feel they need to clarify certain answers to the application form. Worry changed to distress when I missed not one, but FOUR calls from the embassy. The first call was to our house phone, and my sister gave them my mobile number since I was out of the house. The first call to my mobile came while I was struggling to get off a packed LRT, so I had to cancel it. The next two came when the phone was in silent mode because I was at an event. You can just imagine how frantic I was.
I ended up calling the number, but it was the consulate’s trunkline number. I was told to just call the visa information number (845 9200). Because I do not know how to follow instructions, I called the hotline instead, and was told to send them an e-mail, which can be found on the immigration website. I sent an e-mail using the contact form there, and did not receive any response.
On May 7, just a day shy of one month since they received my documents, I called the hotline again, after getting no response or call from the embassy. The operator took pity and gave me a number to contact, which is the consulate hotline. I wasn’t able to talk to anybody, but I did get an e-mail address. I sent another e-mail, which again did not receive any response.
I finally got a text on May 14 that my documents have been dispatched to the courier for delivery. It did not mention if my visa was granted or not. My documents came the following day, and I was so relieved that my application was granted. It wasn’t a multiple entry visa, as I was hoping for. The visa was granted on May 10, and since it was a long weekend, it wasn’t dispatched until after election day.
Unlike before, the embassy not just issue visa grant letters for tourists. You need to bring this when you leave Manila, as the local immigration would ask for your visa before they stamp you out of the country. Also, instead of having a one-year validity, my Australian tourist visa is only valid until November 2013.

Question po sa nag-apply thru VFS: do you get updates on movements in your application? Yung friend ko kasi nag-apply sya for Canada through VFS, and she received updates kung anong stage na ang application nya. Ganun din ba sa nag apply ng tourist visa with VFS?
Canada and Australia are very different they process the visa in a different way. No need to worry lalo na kung complete documents niyo. If you read the processing time of tourist visa application took 1 month….

Yes. Iuupdate ka po thru txt or mail. Once na ma approve visa mo pag memedical ka na nila then wait ka ulet 3 or 4 days labas na visa mo. Base on my expirience pero sa oz ako. 🙂

@pinkheart canete sis i was in the same situation with you before, tv din ako then we applied for extension online, after 3 days we received an email requiring for Medical. I was 9 weeks pregnant at that time, ng email ako sa case officer ko stating my condition but sabi nya she cant give the visa as medical is required if i stay longer than 3 months. So i withdrew my app and went back here in philippines . Our plan was to apply for another tv for 3 months coz they wont require medical if u apply for another 3 mos here. Unfortunately i was advised to rest ,so hindi na ako ng apply. Yung hubby ko na lng pabalik balik dito since hindi ako mkapunta. Sobrang hirap ang malayo. So just last March we applied for Pv, just awaiting for result. i gave birth May 4, so now we are applying for Tv and citizenship for baby and waiting again. Advise ko if hindi nmn maselan pagbubuntis mo you can apply here and then travel again so when you arrive in Oz nasa 2nd trimester ka na so pede ka na mg extend ulit or might as well apply na lng kau ng Pv so pede ka na manganak dun. 6months po kasi ang visa ko and single entry lang. Ang dami kasing nag sasabi dito samin na need to wait 6months ulet bago ma grant yung visa ko. Tho wala akong bank statement na mapapasa pero may sponsor kasi ako yung bro in law ko. Now yun nga worry ako kasi ang sabi mahihirapan na akong maka balik. Kumbaga super baba na daw ng chance ma grant ulet ang visa ko, yung sayo po ba sis ilan months ang pagitan nung nag apply ka ulet? What about yung fiance visa po? Gaano po katagal ang process nun? Hi Tina! I’m not sure if my last reply went thru. Anyway, if your current visa now doesn’t have a ‘No Further Stay’ condition, you can extend your visa while you are in Australia. Punta ka lang sa Immigration office and submit your application for extension 🙂 now if meron kang ‘No Further Stay’ condition sa visa mo, kailangan mo umalis ng Australia before mag expire visa mo. As long as wala kang nilalabag/nilabag na rules, wala namang reason para hindi ka ma-granthan ng visa ulit 🙂 I hope it helps! Good luck!

Meron bang ‘No Further Stay’ condition vis ko now? Yes, 2 or 3 months before ako nag apply ulit kasi sa work ko before. Pero naka extend na ako ng visa while inside Australia wala namang problema 🙂 Google mo lang anong form fill uphan mo for extension.

After 11 days naka recieve ako ng email na need ko na pa medical and then after 3 days lumabas agad yung visa ko. No need na po mag punta ng embassy. Basta pasa ka lang with complete docu. Hi Tina thanks for the info By the way what I mean is uwi kc ako sa June 10 from Singapore then sa pinas ako mag apply nang visa to Australia plan ko sa June 15 And then just worry me kc I have a friend say is not really easy iba daw pero nbabasa ko nman dito sa blog n Ito so far is good un LNG processing it really takes longer sa Singapore kc before 10 days I got my visa approved. Just try my luck in Philippines how it goes ..

Hi Lowella, sabi din ng mga friends namin na pinoy dito swertihan din daw talaga pag na approve ang tourist visa mo. Kasi ako wala akong bank account statement na na submit yung business permit ko lang ang naipasa ko and since sponsor kasi ako ng bro in law ko nag pasa ako ng bank statement nya and ng letter of invitation pero sabi ng mga kakilala namin na pinoy dito sinuwerte pa daw ako sa lagay na yun. Heheh. Pero kung ikaw naman ay may mga supporting documents na maipapasa tulad ng mga katunayan na kaya mong suporthan sarili mo dito for sure ma grant visa mo. Yeah pag expire ng visa need mo mag exit at apply ulet sa pinas. Di din pwede mag work kasi tourist lang nga. At yun yung problema ko kasi baka sa second time na apply ko di na ako ma grant kahit kumpleto papers pa kasi ang sabi nila dito mahirap daw mag re-apply. :[ kaya plano naman namin ng fiance ko fiance visa naman kaso ang tagal. HI Tina! What you can do is apply for a Tourist Visa extension while you’re here in Australia, that is if walang “No Further Stay” condition ang current visa mo. Just go to the Immigration office and drop your application there. 🙂 If may ‘No Further Stay’ condition ka, kailangan mo talaga umalis ng Australia. As long as wala kang nilalabag / nilabag na rules, wala naming problema na mabigyan ka ulit ng visa 🙂 Hope that helps!

The Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) is for people who want to come to Australia to marry their prospective spouse.
It is a temporary visa for nine months. You must be outside Australia when you lodge your application and when the visa is granted. You can have the wedding in any country: the wedding does not need to be in Australia.
Try De Facto Visa, its a Partner Visa as well. You can apply onshore, so you need to be inside Australia pag lumabas na result. That way you can stay longer in Australia kasi it takes at least 10-13months para lumabas result.

730 ang VFS fee mo belle?? Sakin kasi 620 lang nung June 16 2015 ako nag apply last tuesday… Pero SMS ka.. Ako I ask for email only I didn’t want them to send me SMS.. Baka mas mahal nga pag SMS… Hhmm

After one month and 2 days (or and 1 day, dahil holiday sa kanila yesterday), I finally got my TV.

Hello Danica, thanks sis 🙂 I think depende sa immi kung anong decision nila ibigay na entry sa visa app mo… Ito mga docs ipinasa ko ofc form1419, NSO, Bank statement, ITR, passport first page certified copy, intent letter, pics together my BF & my family pic at ito ang mga supporting docs ng BF ko Statutory declaration, Bank statement (2 different bank), NSO, Phone bill, Invitation letter, Itinerary, Driver license, Passport certified copy & passport stamped certified copy….. 5,400 php po yung binayad ko naka managers cheque tourist visa then 620php yung VFS FEE cash ko lang pay.. Then may bayad na pala locker ngaun bawal kasi bag sa loob 100 ang mahal! Hay haha

Hi danica I’m not sure about 720 sa VFS. The last time I applied for TV was November 2014, 5,700php managers cheque and 620 vfs fee walk in.
Mababa kasi yung dollar conversion ngayon kaya 5,400php lang yung apply for tourist visa as of now.

Yes 5700 pesos din binayaran ko when I applied last time October 2014 for tourist visa then 730 pesos for VFS fee. I’m very confused right now kc pa iba iba binabayaran ko. Nung first time na nag apply ako November 2013 , 5900 pesos lhat binayaran ko.

Hi everyone! I have lodged my application online May 12 hanggang ngayon wala pa rin feedback. I understand na it usually takes an average about a 2 weeks to a month for an approval. Yung case ko is a TV just for 3 mos. validity sponsored by my fiancee yung trip. I submitted all documents needed kasi I made sure na complete lahat. I read dun sa isang comment yung about sa invitation letter and proof of financial capacity. Confused/worried lang ako kasi na forward saken lahat ng fiancee ko ITR, payslip and payslip niya at ako nag attach lahat. Basta he filled out what he had to fill out and he sent it back to me. I submitted all my documents din COE, ITR, payslip na rin. Sinunod ko yung checklist. Pati proof of our relationship. Mga trips outside of the country. Entry stamps copy of our reservations meron pangalan namin both, etc.. I asked him to call yung embassy dun sakanila and sabi dapat meron ako makuha response last week pero wala pa rin. Medyo worried na ako kasi wala pa. Am I worrying masyado? Meron pa ba ako pwede gawin for this? To this moment I asked him to call yung embassy sakanila after his work. And considering he works for the government as an engineer I was hoping mas mabilis kasi employed siya sa government hindi mahirap i cross check siya. Any advice or tips po. Thanks!
I also lodged online on 22 May but I didn’t get any feedback from the embassy. This is the longest wait so far kung kelan online application ginawa ko 🙂 I emailed them pero wala ring feedback. Hope we will have positive result!

Hi teresa.. okay lang wala kng Bank statement or ur unemployed as long you can write ur intent letter na may babalikan ka d2 sa pinas b4 ur visa expire and you have complete papers of ur sponsor.

I’m really getting frustrated with this very poor and slow processing of a tourist Visa. Is it the agency that is slow or the people from the Embassy itself. Why it has to be that long? If we dont have any bad intentions just to be with our loved ones. Also they have to bare that we have some plans and dates that are planned already and take note also the plane ticket.. its more expensive of we buy it on the day or 2 days or more prior to our departure. For me its just not reasonable at all for them to take long to time to proces if its qmo th then it should be one month, cause to think we submitted the documents completed. Right?

Due to the volume of applications the embassy gets, the processing can take a long time. Three months prior to your intended date of travel is the earliest date that you can apply for a tourist visa, so even if the application takes two months to process, there is still enough time.
It is never recommended to buy a ticket first before securing a visa, because there is no guarantee that your visa will be granted. Sometimes an embassy will ask for flight booking reservations, but not a ticket.

I know that it is not reccomended to book a ticket before hand. I know that they have a time table for any application. This is actually my second time for a Australian visa, and it is still the same process as now poor and slow. With my Schengen Visas it doesnt take month or months for them to decide, even that was a peak season. Of course i have the reasons to be frustrated/irritated because to think that you have given them the complete and legit documents still it takes forever for them to decide…. I know im not the only one whos applying for a Tourist visa but each one of us has our own Case Officer so that means its easy for them to check the documents, right?
And by the way i did submitted my documents 1 month before prior to my departure.

5 years na akong pabalik balik ng Australia and i been through alot of waiting. Kailangan kapag nag apply ka bigyan mo ng time table yung sarili mo for example yung time frame ng immigration is 1 month gawin mong 2 months.
Depende din kasi ata ung sa requirements kasi ako my last application took me 2 days lang. Ang ginawa ko lang mag damag kong pinag babasa lahat ng mga comments sa site na ito. Then lahat pinag sasama ko so ung mga experience and advice ng iba ayun nakuha ko ang visa ko ng 2 days.
Tyaga lang sa pag aantay kasi kung genuine naman ung intentions ng application and complete lahat ng documents mo sure approved yan 🙂

Oh i forgot dalhin mo pala ang roundtrip ticket mo sis if you travel .thanks again. Or its better you bring all documents you apply for tv for sure if some immi lots of questions. Sa akin kasi dti airport immi perth .travel ako mag isa lang. I thought pagtpz stamp ng passport ko okay na laht. Pero at the back in immi my guy na nagtatanung saakin bout the card that we are to fill up. Tinatanong ako sino puntahan ko at kaano ano ko at ang address . Etc. Pero thanks God wala naman problema.
Yung sa mom ko nga 1month na wala pa din reply from immi. Pero yung sakin 2weeks lang pinag medical na ako. To think na first timer lang din ako. At wala akong bank statement or properties sa pinas. Baka depende nga lang talaga baka this time madaming nag aapply kaya matagal ang proseso. 🙁
