Applying for an Australian tourist visa

[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online

[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.

I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in October 2006. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that a lot has changed since 2006. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.

I’ve been getting quite a lot of inquiries about how to apply for an Australian visa so after a year of this post being in the draft, I’m finally writing it (with hopes of finishing it within 2 hours).

1. Download and read the necessary forms and documents for your visa class.

Everything you need to know about Australian visas are in the official Australian Immigration website at www.immi.gov.au. If you’re just going to visit Australia as a tourist, you fall under Tourist Visa (Subclass 676). The corresponding documents for this visa subclass are:

All files are in PDF format and would require Adobe Reader to open.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship of Australia regularly review and update their visa-related documents and requirements. It’s important that you have the latest edition for your reference, as well as the forms you will fill in.

[UPDATE April 5, 2013] Please note that as of March 23, 2013, the visa subclass for Australian tourist visa is subclass 600 and the application form is now form 1419.

2. Collect the documents needed and make copies of each.

The documents needed for every tourist visa application are listed in the forms. Once you have completed the documents, start filling in the forms. When filling out the form, carefully read the instructions and questions.

The Australian visa application requires you to pay a visa application fee of AU$100. There is an online conversion tool in the immigration website that shows the rate in your currency. The fee must be paid with a manager’s or cashier’s check issued by your bank for the Australian Embassy. Once you have completed your documents, filled in the form and acquired the manager’s check, make copies of everything. Seperate the originals and the copies.

3. Call the Australian Embassy hotline.

The hotline numbers to call for visa application pick up in the Philippines are as follows:

For PLDT/Smart/Touchcard Subscribers 1 (909) 362 – 2779
For Globe/Innove/Touchmobile Subscribers 1 (900) 362 – 2779
For Bayantel Subscribers 1 (903) 362 – 2779

Source: Visitor Information and Application Australia

This is considered a long-distance call, so brace yourself for the ginormous phone bill (Php 32 per minute). The hotline is available Mondays to Fridays, 6am – 8pm, and Saturdays, 8am to 6pm. If you are just calling to inquire about the visa application process, you can call the free hotline at (02) 845-9200.

Schedule for a visa pick up. The agent will ask you questions about your application, so better have your documents with you for reference. After the question and answer portion, the agent will then give you instructions regarding the pick-up and return of your documents. You are encouraged to be there when the FedEx guy picks up the documents. By the way, the courier fee is not included in the Australian visa application fee, so be ready to fork out around Php 300 for Mr. FedEx. This fee covers both the pick up and return delivery.

UPDATE (July 5, 2011): The process has changed since this post’s writing. Here’s the new process for submitting your application, according to the VIA website:

1. Phone-in / Book for a roundtrip Courier Service.
This service is a phone-in option that includes the pick up of the completed Application Form and supporting documents from the applicant’s given address and delivery after processing at the Embassy. This service is available nationwide and involves a flat rate; roundtrip courier fee.

2. Walk-in / Direct Lodgment at the VIA Centre
This is a walk-in option where an applicant or an authorized representative can directly submit the completed Application Form and supporting documents at the Embassy’s Visa Information and Application (VIA) Centre. This option involves a lodgment service & handling fee which includes the one-way delivery by courier after processing.

Source: VIA.ph

4. Start the agonizing wait for denial or approval.

Visa processing can take from three days to one month. The shortest visa processing we had was three days, I think, and the longest was one month. That one month was due to the high influx of visa applications, as my sister applied on the last week of November. Apparently, a lot of Filipinos are applying for visas during this time (probably hoping to spend Christmas in Australia with their families).

So there you have it! I hope this is helpful in someways. If you have any questions, just post them in the comments area, and I’ll try to answer as best as I can ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello, u don’t really need an agency to help you u out in ur application. peperahan ka lang nun. madali lang naman requirements nila eh. u just have to fill up the form 48R. enclosed your passport, 2pcs. passport size picture. if u are employed enclosed your employment certificate and compensation, approved leave, service record, bank certificate of deposit. if you have a business enclosed your bus. permit, dti, etc. same goes with your boyfriend who will be sponsoring you. an invitation letter will do. include also your skype conversation, some pix of you and your bf. it doesn’t matter if its just 7month old relationship. my bf and I is only 4 months but my visa was approved and am here now enjoying melbourne!

    good day ms nina…

im already done processing my tourist visa application..
i received a text message informing me that my passport/documents will be deliver to me in a few days… pero hindi pa ako naiinterview….it means ba n hindi ito approved? they told me that they will advice me kung approved or hindi pero dnt receive any feedback about the status..

and main concern ko is lumipat n ko ng bahay…and yung nlgay kong delivery address eh yung sa dati kong boarding haus…since dun ako nag sstay during my application…

pwede ko ba irequest n sa office address n lng deliver o pwede kaya pick up n lng?

pls help me….im so worried and depressed n…

    will appreciate ur help

    thanks in advanced ..Godbless

    1. nina Avatar

Katrina, if you applied for a tourist visa, there is no interview anymore. They will deliver your passport and documents to the address you put in the application. You should have notified the embassy as soon as you moved. You can either call them to tell them about the change of address or you go to your old boarding house to wait for the courier.

    Hi All!

First of all, I have to thank Ms. Nina for your very very informative blog! It has been very useful for me when I applied for an Australian Visa.

I just want to share my experience in applying for the visitor visa and then fiancee visa.

At first, I did my research in the internet and prepared the right documents: invitation (from my bf), bank acct statement (from bf), bank acct certificate(small dep only, mga 5 digits lang ang balance), and other docs such as BC and transcript of records. When I applied for the visa, it was denied, the Officer stating that I do not have enough incentive to return. Of course, I was devastated.

And then one of my friends referred this agency to me: Ausphil consultancy. They are only a small office but they know the process very well. I paid 5k pesos for their service fee (hindi pa kasama yung sa bayad sa visa mismo tsaka i provided yung ibang mga documents). At first hesitant ako pero nag-go pa rin dahil baka suwertihin na.

That’s how i got my first tourist visa! single entry with 3 months stay yung nabigay pero okay na.

I’m not sure what kind of visa you need to apply for. If your baby is an Australian citizen, holding an Australian passport, you just need to apply for a tourist visa for yourself.

I read all of the experinces shared by everyone of you.I am a foreigner who is studying in Manila and got an invitation from my uncle to visit Australia on Christmas. But I am confusing how to apply for it.I have searched some informations regarding the visa. And my planning is to go on December and spend christmass there. What flight should I take?Because I want direct flight Manila-Perth.And at least how many days will it take to process the tourist visa application? And how about medical check up.Will we just present a valid medical check up or we have to undergo medical check up in the hospitals referred by the Australian embassy in Manila?Your infos will be very useful and appreciated.Thank you

    1. nina Avatar

First, check if you’re required to get an Australian tourist visa. This guide is specific to Philippine passport holders. Apply for a visa before booking your flights. Depending on the volume of visa applications they received, processing can take from 3 days to 30 days. Medical check up is only required for those applying for a 6- or 12-months visa.

You can fly to Perth via Singapore. There are several budget airlines that fly to Singapore from Manila and likewise to Perth from Singapore.

Depende yan sa mga documents na ipapakita mo sa embassy. Hindi porke’t malaki ang laman ng bank account mo sigurado ka nang makakakuha ng visa. Dapat maipakita mo na may malaking rason ka para bumalik sa Pilipinas.

may i ask,, if we were planning to have a vacation at australia by May? when is the best time to process for the visa application? since i am currently studying,it is okay to have it process by April during the vacation? or can we have it process this semestral or christmas vacation? If it was granted by November, December, will it be valid until May? thank you

    1. nina Avatar

You can only apply 3 months ahead from your intended travel date. So if you are traveling in May, you can apply for a visa in February, not earlier.

nina, i am a member of a certain mystical brotherhood based in Australia, and they are holding a convention for 2 days.

i emailed the lodge stating that i am going to attend the said convention, they replied that they are going to send an invitation letter to me for travel purposes.

i stated in my reply to their email that i would stay in australia for 3 to 4 weeks.

    questions:

    1. need ko pa ba magpa medical exam? (3 to 4 weeks stay lang)
    5. if ever na approved na ang visa ko ๐Ÿ™‚ (naks confident), how much is the airfare from philippines to australia? (kahit sinong meron alam nito pwede sumagot.)

you mentioned above na no need to be interviewed na sa australian embassy sa duration ng stay ko which is 3-4 weeks lang, sana wala talaga ๐Ÿ™‚

after 1 month na yung convention aabot pa kaya ako sa pag process ng papers?

i would really appreciate it if you answer all my questions.
    thank you.

    1. nina Avatar

Does this brotherhood starts with a M and ends with a n?

Your invitation should state the convention details, and in your cover letter, mention that you plan to tour Australia after the convention.

      1) No need; medical exam is only for those applying for a 6- or 12-months visa
      2) You can’t. Visa application form must be printed and filled out and submitted.
      3) Please refer to this post: https://justwandering.org/2007/preparation/australia-tourist-visa/
      4) You must be able to prove that you have enough in your bank account to pay for your trip and that you have solid reasons to come back to the Philippines.
      5) Airfare depends on your airline. Check Jetstar, Tiger Airways and Air Asia for cheap fares, or even Philippine Airlines.

I suggest you submit your application ASAP, as processing can take 3 days to 3-weeks, depending on the volume of applications they receive.

      1. jung Avatar

nina, thank you so much for the reply.

i know the brotherhood you mentioned, but that’s not the one ๐Ÿ™‚

pwede ako pumunta sa answer #4 mo?
        – enough na kaya ang bank account at how much kaya ang pwede ko ipakita? 200k is much na ba?

solid reasons to come back to the Philippines.
        – pwede mo ako bigyan ng ideas tungkol dyan? wala akong business, work ko contractual lang, hindi permanent, although matagal na ako sa company na to.
        >>>>>nabasa ko sa isang reply sa taas, naaproved yung visa nya kahit wala syang lupa, if i aint mistaken.

nina, ano tong courier na sinasabi nila? nasa mindanao kasi ako, meaning pupunta sila dito to pick up my docs? which is better, ako pupunta magsusubmit personally o itong tinatawag na courier?

๐Ÿ™‚ at ma approved.

sa assessment mo nina, malaki ba ang chance?

thanks ha, appreciate your efforts sa pag reply. youvee been so helpful.

        god bless you.

      2. nina Avatar

I think 200K is enough. If you’re employed, whether contractual or permanent, you need to submit a certificate of employment that states how long you’ve been working for the company, how much you are paid and the dates of your approved leave for the trip. Hindi requirement ng Australian embassy na magpakita ng titulo ng lupa.

Go to http://www.via.ph. Select Australia, then click on Apply for a Visa. Nakasulat dyan yung process kung paano mag apply. You can either lodge it directly sa office ng VIA sa Cebu or Makati. Since nasa Mindanao ka, you can opt for the return courier service. That means you’ll call the VIA hotline, arrange for a pick up of your documents from either your home or your office, then they will also deliver your passport and original documents back to you after your application has been processed.

When I applied for my visa, which included an invitation letter from my sister, I submitted documents that proves that we are indeed sisters. Unless you want to go through the trouble of collecting additional documents to show your ties with this family friend, I don’t suggest you go through this route.

I’m not in position to say whether you have a good chance or not. I’m not a visa expert; I’m just a blogger who shared my experience with getting an Australian tourist visa.

    Hi Nina!
First, thanks for the effort of writing this informative post- it really helps a lot of newbies like me:)
I just want to ask few things so I can plan things ahead.
My boyfriend is from Canberra, he’s a soldier/public servant. He was here last week ago, and we spent just few days together since he was here just for a short period of time. It was actually like a “whirlwind” romance since we didn’t spend a lot of time knowing each other before we’ve met- and boom! we suddenly felt something special;). Now that he’s back in his home, we only communicate thru email and cellphone. We’re both ready to settle down. He’s inviting me to visit him this Nov till mid of Dec so we can spend more time together before we move to another level. I haven’t go abroad yet, so it would be my 1st time ever. I just resigned from my job last February and is not working until now because of some plans that I want to do in my life (eg. traveling, enjoying life more) and right now, my bank account is not really a good choice for a document. Will it be hard for me (given my financial situation) to get a tourist visa? because I have the idea that if you have money to show off, then everything can be easy. I’m sure he can provide all the required documents on his part… I’m just worrying on my part.
I hope I didn’t sound like cheesy hopeless romantic gal from downtown, hoping to be with her prince :p

Even if your boyfriend is able to prove that he can support your stay in Australia, you must be able to prove that you have solid reasons to come back to the Philippines. That can be in form of a job, school or strong family ties.

thanks for all the inputs, really appreciate it.

As long as it’s printed on the NSO Security Paper, there’s no problem.

Anyway, thank you so much Ms. Brenda for sharing this very important information. But i have some question about you.As what they have written there, your requested NSO birth certificate will be send to the Australian embassy. Is this means that i will get there personally?Or what? As our target date to lodge our application is end of this month?
or how many days that it takes?
Hope to hear from you as were on the process of completing our requirements now.Tnx in advance. And i hope that, this will encourage to other people to share also there experienced.GOD Bless!

        Hi s2b2…

Ang NSO na mismo ang magforward ng docs mo sa embassy…all you have to do is apply online and pay certain amount through debit card or over the counter of the banks accredited to collect NSO payment. You have options how to pay, it is stated there. Just follow the procedure they want you to do

      4. s2b2 Avatar

Salamat Ms.Brenda, and yes your right as what they answer to me when called at the Australian Embassy hot line. But after i submit i did not received an acknowledgment page and email from them. When you do this have you received those after you submit it?

        Hi s2b2,

I received email from e-Census when I did it. Just keep on checking your email. You need to print it out in two copies, the bank will keep one copy when you have to pay.

Australia embassy will no longer accept NSO document from applicant directly effective April 2011. You have to apply your NSO document online. Please visit website of VIA. It is http://www.via.ph

I don’t think they need a medical exam for a tourist visa, unless you really have a serious problem. When are you planning to go to OZ? I’m also processing mine, and still getting some information since I’ll do it by myself lang.

    Hi Nina!

I’ve been using this post as a guideline since I’ll be applying for a tourist visa. I just need your opinion since I don’t want to rely too much from agents who will just squeeze your money out, so I’ll be doing it myself.

My bf will sponsor my trip for a month. He will cover from air fare to my daily expenses while in OZ. Is it alright if he sponsor me even though he is not my relative? Coz I’ve read that sponsorship is for relatives only. If ever, do we have to show proofs of our relationship since I’m not applying for a fiance visa pa naman, just a tourist visa so we can spend more time together.

    He sent me (thru email):
    – the assurance letter with details of sponsorship like telling that he will accommodate everything.
    – A copy of his tax/pay summary
    – A copy of his passport
    – Electric bill

    * Are these enough? Does he need to notarize the letter and send them thru postal? or thru email (ill just print them) is just fine? Does he also need to show a copy of his bank statement since he is going to pay for everything?

    My documents:
    – Personal (NBI, passport)- ok
    – COE- ok
    – Bank statement- Do I have to show this if the trip is not paid by me? Coz honestly, I don’t have much in it (like 20k only)
    – Properties- don’t have one, except with the government housing which is under my name (my lolo put it under my name)Can I claim it as my property even if its just a government housing?

What do you think? Can you give me some ideas as to what else we should work for, and if we are good to go? The plan trip would be this Nov-Dec.

    Tnx! and Keep informing ๐Ÿ™‚

So one reason kaya ako ang pupunta dun para icontinue ang aming love story ๐Ÿ™‚ We don’t have much conversation like yms or skypes din. By the way, have you done requesting your birth certificate through Australian embassy?Kc un na ang bagong patakaran nila.If yes?how you get it?

  30. jung Avatar

hi brenda, tama ang sinabi mo na Australia embassy will no longer accept NSO document from applicant directly effective April 2011, i have to apply online, i just visited the site you mentioned.

maiba ako, tumatanggap ba ang Australian Embassy sa Manila ng Extension Stamping in Passport?

Hindi ko alam kung aabot pa ako sa time ng pag process kasi my passport will expire on november, and i have to lodge my documents pa sa Australian Embassy. I dont know kung yung tinatawag nila na passport extension ang kukunin ko o renewal. kung extension how many days, kung renewal how many days (urgent/emergency travel)? please enlighten me.

also, sabi ni adele, ideal daw yung meron kang kakilala sa Australia na matutuluyan mo, sabi naman ng isang babae na nakausap ko, not a good idea na sasabihin kong meron akong kakilala sa Australia, baka ma deny daw, which is true? ohhh

anyone may asnwer this, pls. thanks

    1. Brenda Avatar
      Brenda

      Hi Jung,

If you have to ask me, you would rather write in your application form the truth. If you have friends there or know someone who lives there, then write it down. About passport expiration, I overheard you can ask or apply extension for it. Much better go and find it at DFA, http://www.dfa.gov

    Hi Ms Nina,

Question.. I got slightly confused while reading the info in VIA website.. Regarding the lodging of application form and requirements, you can either submit it thru (1) walk in or (2) pickup thru phone. However, the charges are quite different? If you avail of the “Phone In” option you’ll only have to pay P320? However, if walk-in, you have to pay P600 -Visa lodgement and P300-passport evidencing? Is that right? or the P320 is an additional delivery charge on top of the P600 and P300…

    Thank you!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. nina Avatar

Hi Lorelei, sorry I can’t really comment on that because when I applied for a visa back in 2006, the application was made directly to the Australian Embassy. They weren’t using VIA then. But yes, I think that Php 320 is the courier fee.

hi nina! magandang umaga! as i’ve read in your blogs/comments, wala ng interview pag TOURIST VISA sa Australia right? so ibig sabihin, hindi sila mag tatanong san galing money sa bank account ko? (say..i get a financial support/money transfer galing sa aussie bf ko? para sa proof of self-financial support during my whole stay in australia)

second, kelangan bang at least 1 year na ko nag tratrabaho dito sa pinas?kahit may ma iprisinta kong COE and return of work after my visa expires?

im planning to stay in oz for 3 weeks lang naman…
i would very much appreciate your response if ever. thank you so much and God bless! great blogs you got here!:)

    1. nina Avatar

Yes, there’s no interview. They will not ask you for the source of money in your account. I’m not sure if it’s required that you have been employed for at least a year.

alright!!! thanks Nina! coz i was told they screen the account of the applicant (but he was applying for US so i wasnt that sure if same thing applies to Aus.)im glad for your help! now all i need is to get a job soon and get the COE and return of work :)i hope one of the proof that i can show is the certificate or proof of contract with the hospital im interested to work at. thanks so much Nina! ๐Ÿ˜€

They won’t ask for it so it’s not really necessary but you may pass yours as an additional/supporting documents. What is important lang naman is you have your COE, bank statement and those other docus involving financial capabilities.

For everyone, prayers really do help! ๐Ÿ˜€

        G_F

Hi Glenda… just confirmed you sa FB.
Sino ba magsponsor ng travel mo? Mine is my Aussie bf kasi. Ang mga pinasa ko lang were; completed form, e-census receipt (for my NSO), my bf’s invitation letter, his passport copy, electric bill nya, pay summary nya and 2pcs passport pictures. I didn’t pass any bank statement since I wasn’t confident sa funds ko, and no COE. I guess, just be honest with your intention. Dun kasi sa form, may question dun abt ur reason why you’re going to visit OZ. I wrote there na to have a short holiday and spend some quality time with my bf since he is much needed there (bcoz of his work) so I’ll come and visit him instead. Since unemployed ung status ko, nilagay ko na lang dun sa details abt pass employment was, I’m planning to accept an offer from a BPO company once my plan trip is over since this pays well here sa pinas. I worked there for 2 years, although this may not be true but at least you can give them an idea na may naghihintay sayo dito sa pinas.

Again, prayer still works best. Just prepare all the possible documents, be honest and be concise na din when answering the form.

If you have an invitation letter from someone, put there yung details like ano yung help na ibibigay nya (if that includes air fare, travel and daily expenses, place to stay etc for the whole duration of your visit)
