Travel Expenses: Japan – Just Wandering

Travel Expenses: Japan

Japan is expensive. They do not exaggerate when they say that. It really is. But that’s not to say it’s not a good place to travel in. Japan is incredibly tourist friendly despite the language barrier, and a lot of tourist attractions have free admission (well, mostly temples, shrines and palace grounds).

Now that more budget carriers are flying direct to Japan from Manila (including Jetstar), it’s cheaper than ever to go there. The biggest expenses in Japan are the transportation, accommodation and food. A ride in the subway costs a minimum of ¥200 (around Php 100), same with buses. But if you don’t mind walking, you can make most of Japan Rail’s network to get around for free if you’re holding a Japan Rail Pass. Accommodation costs can be driven down by staying in hostel dorms or even further down by Couchsurfing with a local host. As for the food, Japanese supermarkets and convenience stores offer bento boxes of real food, so you won’t have to live on instant ramen (unless you’re really strapped for cash). Onigiri (rice ball with filling or seasoning) starts at ¥68, bento at ¥350, depending on where you’re buying.

If you’re like me who have a weakness for shopping, you’ll go crazy in Japan. They have a lot of shops that offer the cutest things and brands that we don’t get in Manila. If you’re a toy collector, prepare to say goodbye to your money when you step inside Kiddyland, Mandarake or the Kotobukiya store. Toys and figures are for most part, cheaper in Japan. But for other things, it’s about the same or it’s more expensive.

The biggest savings I got for this trip was the Japan Rail Pass. Sure it cost me Php 23,000 for a 14-day pass, but considering that a one-way ride on the shinkansen starts around Php 3,000 and I rode 6 of them and a bunch of other trains, it really is worth the investment. Of course, that’s only applicable if you plan to move around a lot, like I did. If you plan on staying in just one city, best not to buy it. I’ll be posting about this in detail in a later post.

Wow! 105k! I’m gonna pass out with your Japan budget. Di keri ng powers ko. I might go there for 1 week lng rin haha! But I guess considering that it was a 14 day trip and super ganda ng places, worth ang every cent. Thanks for sharing this nina 🙂

  5. Kat Avatar

Nalula ako sa total expenses but when you think about it, you’ve gone to so many places, did a lot of things and went shopping at this amount right? Plus, it’s for 14 days? I think that’s fair. 😀

  6. Arbet Avatar

Yay. Kung pupunta ako ng Japan, baka sa Tokyo lang ako para magshopping haha. Tapos magpakasawa sa instant ramen at konbini bento, tapos magstay sa pinakacheap na accommodations.

  7. Sheng Avatar

Been following your series of Japan posts because Japan is also one of my dream travel destinations. Pero ang mahal pala, napa-comment ako bigla. Sana di siya manatiling pangarap lang.

My family is planning on going to Japan 2 years from now, if not next year. I knew a trip to Japan would be expensive but I never imagined it to be THAT expensive. Kaloka haha. Especially the 23k 14-day train pass. Kahit 4 times a day nagtren mahal pa rin. =)) Now I had to slave myself more. @_@ This post is a great heads-up. Thanks~! 😀

Mahal talaga sa Japan although I think magiging mura na in the coming months when Japan Air Asia, Peach, and Jet Star Japan start their operations. Laking tipid din nun against astronomical train ride costs.

Thanks for the spreadsheets, Nina! Looks like my OC self will have to do a load of number crunching to figure out how in the world we’re going to afford going to Japan. LOL.

    1. nina Avatar

The figures could definitely go lower, and it’d be lower specially if you’re sharing the costs with your sister 😀

Hi Nina! Can I ask how you applied for the visa? I’m confused if I could to Japan without having a relative or friends there. Thanks!

    1. nina Avatar

I went to Universal Holiday in Dusit with my requirements and Php2,500 processing fee. I didn’t have relatives and friends in Japan either. For the visa application, read these posts:

In fair! Ang dami mong ginawa. And the Hida beef. Does the Japan Rail Pass let you get around Tokyo via subway?

I always love reading your expense breakdown, Nins. It helps me get a fair idea of what I can follow and where I can adjust as a traveler.

    1. nina Avatar

Only on the Yamanote Line! For the subway, I had to buy separate tickets. Check out the next post! It has the details of the pass 😀

    hi,
nice blog post. I live in Japan and had a wedding last March, so a lot of my family came and yup I felt a little guilty since they spent way too much money. Transportation cost within Japan would really put a dent sa budget. Since I own 2 bikes we cycle around a lot visiting nearby parks to see the blossoms, very authentic Japanese experience but cheap 🙂

  39. Raymund Avatar

It is so expensive pala, only the elite can afford..haha

    1. nina Avatar

It’s expensive, yes. But I am not a part of the elite, so Japan is definitely not limited to the “elite.”

      2. nina Avatar

Hi Elbi, you can find the Kitkats in most souvenir shops. Even the train station kiosks have them 🙂

  40. George Barley Avatar

Ever since, I was already expecting a very expensive trip to Japan. Transportation around the city and other areas is the most costly, especially if you take the bullet train. That’s why most of the people have bicycles there. The food is great since I’m a fan of Japanese delicacies.

  41. marie Avatar

Hi! I really like the way you organize your trip! I saw your blog from a post made by Laureen Uy. She mentioned you won an award in Malaysia. Congratulations for that and going through your blog now, the award is really for you! You deserve it no doubt. Hope you can check my new blog and drop some feedback 🙂

There are cheaper places to stay, like the capsule inns that are around Tokyo station (some are around JPY2500/night). Its an experience by itself. Also, if you’re going there for just a week, the Rail Pass is not a good idea. Hindi mo masusulit yun, I say, just focus on staying in either the Kansai region, or the Tohoku area. I vote for the Kansai region, not only because Cebu Pac goes there directly, but also you get to see some of the best cities in Japan. Make Osaka ur base, and take day trips to Kyoto (40mins-1hr), Nara (30-40mins) or Kobe (30mins). If you go to a random train station (the JR, Keihan or Kintetsu), they will have day passes usually around JPY2000 to these cities inclusive of train and bus rides. Sometimes also free entrances to the tourist attraction.

I also highly recommend going up to Koya-san, which is an hour and a half away from Osaka. You can opt to stay at a “temple lodging” and walk around Okuin cemetery at night. The train lumbering up the mountain and the scenery is an experience.

Tokyo is cool but I think its a bit overrated and expensive. When you go down south, you see a very Japanese Japan. Not too many visitors as compared to Tokyo. The people are friendlier and the food fantastic.

P.S. If you want cheap bentos, go to any supermarket near closing time and sometimes, there are very nice bentos and sushi plates at half the original price.

hello nina, i observed your route quiet interesting, as i usually do the same, doing a stop over in certain places, that usually cost less when you stop somewhere, and for a traveller this is what we look for, I tried Tokyo-Taipei-Manila, this allows you to room around Taipei. my 8 days budget was like 35k. Osaka-Nagoya-Tokyo. Keep on traveling…….

I either go to their office to buy insurance (you can pay in either peso or dollar), but sometimes if I go through certain agents, I pay via bank deposit.

I think I got the deluxe dollar plan.
