[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online
[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.
I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in April 2013. This is geared towards applicants who holds a Philippine passport, though the preparation can be applied for other nationalities as well. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that I can’t answer all your questions. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.
After almost seven years, I finally have an update to my now epic How to Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa series. I have written two posts on the topic, both garnering over a thousand comments, with one getting over 4,500! I have stopped replying to comments, since I don’t think I’m not the best person to be talking about it, as my knowledge of the visa process is largely obsolete, so the visitors have taken upon themselves to answer each other’s questions, with successful applicants coming back to share their good news and help others. It has become a mini forum of sorts and I have to admit I’m happy it turned out that way. I found it to be a great help when I took another chance to apply for an Australian tourist visa once more.
Before I get to the visa application process, here’s some background about me and my circumstances: I am a Philippine passport holder, and have applied and received a visa from Australia before. I have a valid US Visa, with used tourist visas to Canada, Japan, and Myanmar. I also have more than 70 arrival and departure stamps from various countries, and that’s just in one passport. I am single and have my own company registered with the DTI. I have a bank account and a couple of credit cards, and I have two sisters who live in Australia, one of which is a temporary resident and the other a citizen. My intention to visit was for a short break from life in Manila, and to hopefully visit places I missed during my first two trips to the Australia.
Step 1: Download and read the necessary pages, documents, and forms.
This is very important, I can’t stress that enough. It won’t do to just ask questions without reading these web pages and documents first, because you’ll look like an idiot. Majority of your questions would likely be answered by the information written in these files. All these are available for download at the Australian Immigration website, immi.gov.au, and they are all free.

There is no need to print all of those pages or forms (unless you prefer to read them off the computer), but the one thing you should print is the visa application form. It’s a fillable form, wherein you can type in your answers on the form itself and print it afterwards. If you use Adobe Reader to open it, it will not save the changes to the form, so fill it out only when you are ready to print and submit. However, if you’re using Foxit PDF Reader, it can save the changes to the form, so you can fill it out and edit it later on before printing.
Step 2: Gather the required documents
Page 15 of Form 1419, Part M is actually an application check list. The column on the left lists all the required documents, while the column on the right lists the additional documents you may submit.
Here are the documents I submitted:
- Certified true copy of the identity page and pages with visa stamps of my valid passport
- Recent passport photo taken within the last six months
- Visa application charge in manager’s or cashier’s check
The Australian embassy do not affix visa labels anymore, so there’s no need to send your passport when you apply, unless you specify that you want a visa label. I would have done this, but the label costs AU$70.
Step 3: Gather your supporting documents
Here are the supporting documents I submitted. Remember that this vary depending on your circumstance. You’re not required to submit all of these, but it is advised that you submit as much supporting documents as you can to prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, and that you have a strong reason to come back to the Philippines.
- Birth certificate printed on security paper
- Certified true copy of my DTI Registration
- Certified true copy of my BIR Registration (Form 2303)
- Certified true copy of my Income Tax Return (From 1701)
- Certified true copy of the invitation letter from my sister
- Certified true copy of my sister’s pay slip
- Certified true copy of my sister’s passport bio page and employee ID
- NBI Clearance
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Itinerary
The Australian immigration require that all photocopied documents you submit are certified true copies. You can do this by going to the Notary Public.
If you look at the form, it doesn’t list the birth certificate as part of the documents needed. I included it anyway, since I have an extra copy. Also, when I called to have my document picked up, they mentioned something about the NSO and I asked if I still need to get another since I already have a SECPA copy. They said I can include my copy instead of getting a new one.

The NBI clearance isn’t really required either, but I included it since I have it anyway. I got it because it was required in the previous form, 48R. A medical isn’t required, but you may be required to get one if you are applying for a 6-month visa, or if you’re over 75 years old. The medical is only done through accredited clinics. From what I understand, you have to submit your application and use the reference code the embassy will give you when you go for your medical.
I also included a cover letter [Download sample of intent letter] explaining the purpose of my trip and that I wish to get a multiple-entry visa, since I want to make a side trip to New Zealand. This isn’t really necessary, since the form now asks for your trip’s purpose. You are also asked to provide an itinerary of your trip, though you are not required nor advised to make any bookings until your visa is approved.
Step 4: Buy a manager’s check for the visa fee
The visa fee is AU$115, which is Php 5,100, based on the conversion rate at the time. Please double check the fees and the conversion rate, as this can change anytime. I bought my manager’s check from BDO, since I have an account there. Based on the comments in the previous blog posts, there are banks that would not let you buy a manager’s check if you don’t have an account with them. Best to call and inquire with the banks in your area if they’ll let you buy a manager’s check from them even if you don’t have an account.
Step 5: Lodge your application

You don’t have to go to the embassy to submit your application. There are two ways to submit: you can either call the embassy hotline and have them pick up your documents or submit them in person at the VIA Center.
I opted to go with the call center, since it was summer and don’t want to be away for too long from my electric fan. Calling the hotline costs Php 32 per minute, not including the charges from your network provider, if you are calling from a mobile phone. My phone call took about 10 minutes (which included a long wait for them to finish a spiel, and another wait for an operator to be available), and cost me Php 339.29. If you’re going this route, listen closely at the start of the spiel, because there is an option to skip that and go directly to request for a pick up.
The courier fee for Metro Manila is Php 320, paid directly to the messenger who will pick up your documents. This fee covers both pick up and delivery after your application as been processed.
VIA Center have offices in Makati and Cebu.
Step 6: Wait for your visa
Visa processing takes about ten days all the way to 30 days. I called to have my documents picked up on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. It was almost 5pm when I called, and was told that they have already reached the quota for pick up the follwing day. My documents were picked up on Thursday, April 4. I received a text from the embassy that my documents were received on Monday, April 8.
By the third week of April, I was wondering what’s happening to my application. Someone who commented on my previous post said her application was received around the same time and she already has her visa. I started worrying when someone who submitted a week after I did said she already got her visa grant. That’s when I also found out that the embassy conducts phone interviews.
Apparently, they don’t do this to all applicants, only for those they feel they need to clarify certain answers to the application form. Worry changed to distress when I missed not one, but FOUR calls from the embassy. The first call was to our house phone, and my sister gave them my mobile number since I was out of the house. The first call to my mobile came while I was struggling to get off a packed LRT, so I had to cancel it. The next two came when the phone was in silent mode because I was at an event. You can just imagine how frantic I was.
I ended up calling the number, but it was the consulate’s trunkline number. I was told to just call the visa information number (845 9200). Because I do not know how to follow instructions, I called the hotline instead, and was told to send them an e-mail, which can be found on the immigration website. I sent an e-mail using the contact form there, and did not receive any response.
On May 7, just a day shy of one month since they received my documents, I called the hotline again, after getting no response or call from the embassy. The operator took pity and gave me a number to contact, which is the consulate hotline. I wasn’t able to talk to anybody, but I did get an e-mail address. I sent another e-mail, which again did not receive any response.
I finally got a text on May 14 that my documents have been dispatched to the courier for delivery. It did not mention if my visa was granted or not. My documents came the following day, and I was so relieved that my application was granted. It wasn’t a multiple entry visa, as I was hoping for. The visa was granted on May 10, and since it was a long weekend, it wasn’t dispatched until after election day.
Unlike before, the embassy not just issue visa grant letters for tourists. You need to bring this when you leave Manila, as the local immigration would ask for your visa before they stamp you out of the country. Also, instead of having a one-year validity, my Australian tourist visa is only valid until November 2013.

Hello…. pwede mg ask kng sino may alam… may bf ako sa Australia at chef siya, sa NSW area… tanong ko lng sobrang liit ba tlga ng sweldo ng mga workers dun kase ayaw niya sabihin mgkano yung sahod niya… yung friend ko nkapag work na sa Australia tapos cleaner siya then malaki naman sahod tapos limited time lng tapos per hour ang rate.. siguro naman mas malaki sahod ni bf kase taga dun siya tapos chef din. Wonder lng kase ako kase until now hindi ako inoofferan ni bf na invite ako dun pero sobrang tagal na plano na niya… ngiipon pa daw siya… mag 1 year na din kase nyang promise yun sakin…. hehe siguro inip lng ako kase wala din akong work for now tapos kng gusto ko naman mg work eh ngagalit siya pero naiinis siya dahil magastos daw ako dahil support niya ako weekly pero hindi naman kalakihan, sakto lng for me.. sabi ko nga sana ngpatuloy nlng ako sa work ko dahil sayang yung time pero ngagalit naman siya kng magbabanggit ako ng trabaho pero laging sibasabing magastos daw ako sa pang araw2 dahil support niya ako. Pati ako naguguluhan, ayoko din mangulit na mg process na kase baka isipin na yun lng ang gusto mkapunta dun which is not true… wait ko lng yung siya tlga mismo mg offer then hindi naman din ako nanghihingi ng kahit anu2 na bagay para bilhan ako. Just a thought! Haha sorry medyo mahaba pero napaisip lng tlga ako parang mas malaki pa sweldo ng friend ko na pinay dun kesa sa kanya. Hahaha lol naku ewan ko pa… zzzzzzzzzz

Hi mga sis. I don’t think my post got through. I’ll just ask again. I have applied for my third tourist visa through online application last aug 10 asking for a 6-month stay. Now, the status is still application received. Question is: will it change to “assessment in progress” before it goes to “finalized”? And does anyone here had an experience like this: from “application received” it went directly to “finalized”? Because I have seen a post here of the diagram showing the life cycle of online application. From application received to assessment in progress to finalized. And then there was an arrow from application received going directly to finalized. I hope someone can answer this. Thanks guys. Goodluck! 🙂

I have just lodged my tv yesterday,Oct 17. It is now on “Application Received”. With regards to your question, based on the diagram, if CO wants more info then it will change to “Information Reqested”, means you have to provide/attach more docs.After you attached more docs, then info requested will change to “Assessment in progress” then “finalized. If they dont need more info then from App received will change to “finalized. 😀

Sis artw. Much better you call the immi total almost 3 months kana nag aantay ok na kontakin mo na sila.. Ksi yung friend q ganyan din halos mag dadalwang buwan na nya inaantay pero wala parin. Pero sinubukan nila kontakin ang iimi.. Yun after 2 days tumawag ang immi. Then after 2 days grant na visa nya nung isang araw lang sya na grant then. Kahapon nandto na cxa.

Sis Kay, first time mo for TV application or first time lodging online? When I was in au, I called the embassy and asked if I can lodge PV and TV at the same time. But she said it’s better to lodge PV first, then when I receive the acknowledgement for PV I can apply for TV. Hope you get your grant notice soon too. Best of luck talaga to all of us.

Basta kung sino mn first timer dito.make sure u submit all the important docs u think can help ur app. Positve lng lagi while waiting.wag e stress ang sarili kc darating tlga result nyan..online app or vfs app same lng nmn..tried both na.. Medyo matagal lng tlga process nila this time.pero merun namn iba madali lng result. If u think its been so long than the average time waiting,try to follow up. I did that on my online app for my kids.i rang them till i got through to speak to someone but didnt realized i was actually speaking to someone from dep immig. After our call in less than an hour, got the visa result for the kids. So now all the waiting and efforts with God’s Guidance, we are now on partner visa onshore.
Sa iba na planning for P.V i recommend do it onshore, cause i think its less hassle with the docs etc…

Hi, aliana., once mkasal na kau.u need to apply for registration of ur marriage.sa philippine consular. Pra ma procrss yan dun sa phil at makakuha u ng marriagr cert sa nso..it take 3 months or more bago ma register sa nso. At u need to attend a seminar sa manila. Yan pag offshore app ng PV. Very hassle..
Suggest ko lng.. I read somewhere u have a child? Why not apply for another tourist visa nxt time when u in phil with your child? Then later on .when u here in oz. U can apply for a PV with ur child.. So much easier pa base on my exprrienced. Same lng nman ang fee ng tourist visa sa child at docs madali lng…pag offshore ang dami pa needed… Kahit online u e apply pag andito u na wla probs un. Oo meron aqng two child sa dating ex. Qoh! Ksi gusto ni fiance na mag apply aq ng p.v. pag uwi q ng pinas. Saka now ang visa q ngayon is. T.v. expired nya ng march next year then meron narin aqng ticket pauwi itong dec. Hi aliana.. You can do it online namn which is so much easier like i did..very helpful din nman un tga immig if u need to call them.. And they will call u if they require u more docs or clarification. I applied mine online but later on had to add my dependent children to my app, so i had to post it as couldnt do it online, but the payment posted separate through money order my husband did it. Few days later they rang my husband at work clarifying about the money order they receieved and they have not receive the forms for my kids i posted. My husband got panic and so i am. But the immig told my husband not to worry cause she will help as much as possible and she is good at her job. She told my husband to email her.My husband had to left work early and sent and email to that immig officer confirming that we wanted to add my children in my app.after 30 mins we received the acknowledgment letter for my children. We were so happy.just like that…
The fact is . they have not actually receive the forms i posted but still she granted my kids to be added on my app..u wouldnt believe it but my kids visa was gonna expire in the next day if we didnt have it sorted out..

Hi sis ALIANA. Where ka sa oz? Nag-apply ako last week of September 2015 for PV then last October 10 nag-apply ako TV online. Offshore yun PV. Kasi I have kids here in the Philippines who are attending school. So we decided dito na lang mag-apply Ng partner visa. I have prepared everything on my own. I think I have used almost 1,000 pages of papers. Lmao! I have decided to submit them sa vfs through paper application. Kasi sobrang dami to scan then convert sa 5MB file size Kung online application. Why don’t you lodge a partner visa there in oz? I guess it’s easier. Do you have kids here in the Philippines? *correction pala sa first post ko aug 10 nalagay ko for TV. Oct 10 yun. Hehe

What was it like in terms of documents, fees, other requirements. What docs do we need to prepare?
Also, I have active Visitor Visa which expires next year pa. Hindi ba maka-cancel yung visitor visa pag nag appky ng fiancee visa? I use it to visit my partner in Australia and have been there twice.

Nakakastress maghanap Ng mga requirements like receipts and all that. So I suggest before you apply, start organizing as early as 6 months before lodgement of PV. Hi sis LENE. No hindi pa ako nagpapa-annul. Akala ko dati di pwede mag-apply Ng partner visa if kasal pa sa Iba. But I read as much as I can then I found out na we can apply for a partner visa (de facto). 2 kasi basis Ng partner visa. 1. For married couples(spouse) 2. De facto for those people who are living together with times of separation but not on a permanent basis and usual requirement is you have been in a relationship with your partner for 1 year. Pwede rin hindi, just as long as you have a compassionate reason. Like you you have a child together or your relationship is not acceptable in your home country. Annulment process here in the Philippines is not easy. It is expensive and lengthy. You need to have a lot of money. So my partner and I decided na it’s better to work towards our future together and then I can file for annulment if we’re well established na. we want to get married one day. Yung proper wedding talaga. Yung sakin civil lang yun and for formality lang. Nakakasisi nga.

Ksi now im pregnant 5 weeks and 6 days uuwi aq next month then by march or april i applying for partner visa offshore. Ok lang kaya yun na mag pasa aq ng docs. even im pregnant. Sis ALIANA, hindi mo lahat yun kelangan kumpletuhin. Ang importante lang is meron kang proof Ng relationship nyo. Socially, financially, you have been in a loving, genuine relationship, and your relationship is a lifetime commitment. Then yung sa mga receipts and tickets. Important din na meron letters, invitations, or anything na naka-address sa both names nyo Ng partner mo. What I have done was I read the partner migration booklet. I have printed it and read it all. 53 pages yun. Form 47SP sayo, then Kay partner 40SP. kahit wala kang land title or properties. Kung meron si sponsor malaking tulong din yun. Hindi naman titingnan yung financial capacity mo, yung sa sponsor ang important. Because pag na grant ka Ng temporary visa(309) and di ka nakahanap Ng work agad, kelangan ma prove Ni sponsor na kaya Nya i-shoulder expenses mo within 2 years. Kasi hindi ka entitled sa government benefits until maging permanent ka. Yung sa sponsor mo, lahat Ng documents Nya, pa-sign Nya sa JP sa oz, then he can just scan it and send it to you thru email. No need to take it all or post it to the Philippines. 🙂 ok lang, feel free to ask. Basta May time ako, I will reply. 🙂

Kylie, if he’s going to write on statutory declaration it needs to be signed by a JP. But if he’s just gonna write on an ordinary paper like a statement, no need naman pa-sign pa sa JP. All of his photocopied documents, they need to be certified copies so need Ng signature Ng JP. Yung original documents, no need na like credit card bills, bank statements, etc.

Sis LENE, I am a bit confused with the situation. I have questions to clarify. 1. Si guy ba ay australian citizen? 2. Si girl(wife), anong nationality? 3. Until now, are they living in the same house? If they are still living in one roof,though in separate bedrooms, that will cause a problem. Because though he is still married, he needs to prove that he is permanently not living with his ex-wife. The wife, sabi mo laging nagstay dun, so the embassy knows that they are still living together.
Hi Sis.The guy is an Oz citizen.The wife is an Indonesian. And previously married to an Oz citizen and she acquired her citizenship by herself and not because of this guy at present.

I am not an expert on that kind of situation sis LENE. But I think the best solution is to divorce the wife. If the guy, kinuha Nya yung wife Nya sa Australia for migration, I think he needs to wait 5 years para maging sponsor ulit.

Sis LENE, that’s better on the gf’s part that the wife didn’t get her citizenship through the husband. But they need to live separately if the guy wants to be in a loving relationship with the gf or take her to oz. much better if he divorce the wife. It’s easy to get a divorce in other countries. You said it’s been 10 years, I guess it’s about time for the guy to do something about his situation. This is just my opinion. I am not an expert about legal matters, but if he wants to move on and have a continuing relationship with the gf, then that’s what he needs to do. If a couple will apply for a partner visa base on de facto, if they were married to another person other than their partner, they should satisfy the embassy that the previous relationship has permanently ended. Proofs maybe: annulment, divorce, or statutory declaration from the ex wife and ex husband stating that they are separated permanently.

hi sis Mikaela, ako lang gumawa, eni-encode ko sa computer tapos print out ko, pinabasa ko lang sa knya tapos nilagyan nya ng pirma . tapos sa reference letter ng mama ko, ako din gumawa, tapos pirmahan nya lang..depende kasi sis sa reason ng letter, case to case basis daw kaya ilagay mo ung pinaka important reasons hehe.
