[UPDATE October 13, 2015] Here’s a guide on how you can easily, quickly, and cheaply apply for an Australian tourist visa online
[Update: September 15, 2014] Philippine passport holders can now apply for an Australian tourist visa online through the IMMI website. Application fee must be paid via credit card. You can still apply in person through VFS.
I am not a visa officer, nor am I migration agent. I am in no way affiliated with the Australian Embassy Manila nor with the Australian government. This post comes from my experience with preparing and submitting visa applications for family members and for myself. Also note that this entry pertains to my experience in applying for an Australian tourist visa in April 2013. This is geared towards applicants who holds a Philippine passport, though the preparation can be applied for other nationalities as well. The Australian immigration update their forms every 3 months. I will try to answer your questions the best way that I can, but bear in mind that I can’t answer all your questions. If you ask a question I’ve already answered in the post, I will ignore you.
After almost seven years, I finally have an update to my now epic How to Apply for an Australian Tourist Visa series. I have written two posts on the topic, both garnering over a thousand comments, with one getting over 4,500! I have stopped replying to comments, since I don’t think I’m not the best person to be talking about it, as my knowledge of the visa process is largely obsolete, so the visitors have taken upon themselves to answer each other’s questions, with successful applicants coming back to share their good news and help others. It has become a mini forum of sorts and I have to admit I’m happy it turned out that way. I found it to be a great help when I took another chance to apply for an Australian tourist visa once more.
Before I get to the visa application process, here’s some background about me and my circumstances: I am a Philippine passport holder, and have applied and received a visa from Australia before. I have a valid US Visa, with used tourist visas to Canada, Japan, and Myanmar. I also have more than 70 arrival and departure stamps from various countries, and that’s just in one passport. I am single and have my own company registered with the DTI. I have a bank account and a couple of credit cards, and I have two sisters who live in Australia, one of which is a temporary resident and the other a citizen. My intention to visit was for a short break from life in Manila, and to hopefully visit places I missed during my first two trips to the Australia.
Step 1: Download and read the necessary pages, documents, and forms.
This is very important, I can’t stress that enough. It won’t do to just ask questions without reading these web pages and documents first, because you’ll look like an idiot. Majority of your questions would likely be answered by the information written in these files. All these are available for download at the Australian Immigration website, immi.gov.au, and they are all free.

There is no need to print all of those pages or forms (unless you prefer to read them off the computer), but the one thing you should print is the visa application form. It’s a fillable form, wherein you can type in your answers on the form itself and print it afterwards. If you use Adobe Reader to open it, it will not save the changes to the form, so fill it out only when you are ready to print and submit. However, if you’re using Foxit PDF Reader, it can save the changes to the form, so you can fill it out and edit it later on before printing.
Step 2: Gather the required documents
Page 15 of Form 1419, Part M is actually an application check list. The column on the left lists all the required documents, while the column on the right lists the additional documents you may submit.
Here are the documents I submitted:
- Certified true copy of the identity page and pages with visa stamps of my valid passport
- Recent passport photo taken within the last six months
- Visa application charge in manager’s or cashier’s check
The Australian embassy do not affix visa labels anymore, so there’s no need to send your passport when you apply, unless you specify that you want a visa label. I would have done this, but the label costs AU$70.
Step 3: Gather your supporting documents
Here are the supporting documents I submitted. Remember that this vary depending on your circumstance. You’re not required to submit all of these, but it is advised that you submit as much supporting documents as you can to prove that you can fund your trip to Australia, and that you have a strong reason to come back to the Philippines.
- Birth certificate printed on security paper
- Certified true copy of my DTI Registration
- Certified true copy of my BIR Registration (Form 2303)
- Certified true copy of my Income Tax Return (From 1701)
- Certified true copy of the invitation letter from my sister
- Certified true copy of my sister’s pay slip
- Certified true copy of my sister’s passport bio page and employee ID
- NBI Clearance
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Itinerary
The Australian immigration require that all photocopied documents you submit are certified true copies. You can do this by going to the Notary Public.
If you look at the form, it doesn’t list the birth certificate as part of the documents needed. I included it anyway, since I have an extra copy. Also, when I called to have my document picked up, they mentioned something about the NSO and I asked if I still need to get another since I already have a SECPA copy. They said I can include my copy instead of getting a new one.

The NBI clearance isn’t really required either, but I included it since I have it anyway. I got it because it was required in the previous form, 48R. A medical isn’t required, but you may be required to get one if you are applying for a 6-month visa, or if you’re over 75 years old. The medical is only done through accredited clinics. From what I understand, you have to submit your application and use the reference code the embassy will give you when you go for your medical.
I also included a cover letter [Download sample of intent letter] explaining the purpose of my trip and that I wish to get a multiple-entry visa, since I want to make a side trip to New Zealand. This isn’t really necessary, since the form now asks for your trip’s purpose. You are also asked to provide an itinerary of your trip, though you are not required nor advised to make any bookings until your visa is approved.
Step 4: Buy a manager’s check for the visa fee
The visa fee is AU$115, which is Php 5,100, based on the conversion rate at the time. Please double check the fees and the conversion rate, as this can change anytime. I bought my manager’s check from BDO, since I have an account there. Based on the comments in the previous blog posts, there are banks that would not let you buy a manager’s check if you don’t have an account with them. Best to call and inquire with the banks in your area if they’ll let you buy a manager’s check from them even if you don’t have an account.
Step 5: Lodge your application

You don’t have to go to the embassy to submit your application. There are two ways to submit: you can either call the embassy hotline and have them pick up your documents or submit them in person at the VIA Center.
I opted to go with the call center, since it was summer and don’t want to be away for too long from my electric fan. Calling the hotline costs Php 32 per minute, not including the charges from your network provider, if you are calling from a mobile phone. My phone call took about 10 minutes (which included a long wait for them to finish a spiel, and another wait for an operator to be available), and cost me Php 339.29. If you’re going this route, listen closely at the start of the spiel, because there is an option to skip that and go directly to request for a pick up.
The courier fee for Metro Manila is Php 320, paid directly to the messenger who will pick up your documents. This fee covers both pick up and delivery after your application as been processed.
VIA Center have offices in Makati and Cebu.
Step 6: Wait for your visa
Visa processing takes about ten days all the way to 30 days. I called to have my documents picked up on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. It was almost 5pm when I called, and was told that they have already reached the quota for pick up the follwing day. My documents were picked up on Thursday, April 4. I received a text from the embassy that my documents were received on Monday, April 8.
By the third week of April, I was wondering what’s happening to my application. Someone who commented on my previous post said her application was received around the same time and she already has her visa. I started worrying when someone who submitted a week after I did said she already got her visa grant. That’s when I also found out that the embassy conducts phone interviews.
Apparently, they don’t do this to all applicants, only for those they feel they need to clarify certain answers to the application form. Worry changed to distress when I missed not one, but FOUR calls from the embassy. The first call was to our house phone, and my sister gave them my mobile number since I was out of the house. The first call to my mobile came while I was struggling to get off a packed LRT, so I had to cancel it. The next two came when the phone was in silent mode because I was at an event. You can just imagine how frantic I was.
I ended up calling the number, but it was the consulate’s trunkline number. I was told to just call the visa information number (845 9200). Because I do not know how to follow instructions, I called the hotline instead, and was told to send them an e-mail, which can be found on the immigration website. I sent an e-mail using the contact form there, and did not receive any response.
On May 7, just a day shy of one month since they received my documents, I called the hotline again, after getting no response or call from the embassy. The operator took pity and gave me a number to contact, which is the consulate hotline. I wasn’t able to talk to anybody, but I did get an e-mail address. I sent another e-mail, which again did not receive any response.
I finally got a text on May 14 that my documents have been dispatched to the courier for delivery. It did not mention if my visa was granted or not. My documents came the following day, and I was so relieved that my application was granted. It wasn’t a multiple entry visa, as I was hoping for. The visa was granted on May 10, and since it was a long weekend, it wasn’t dispatched until after election day.
Unlike before, the embassy not just issue visa grant letters for tourists. You need to bring this when you leave Manila, as the local immigration would ask for your visa before they stamp you out of the country. Also, instead of having a one-year validity, my Australian tourist visa is only valid until November 2013.

hi i would like to ask if i can process my sister’s australian tourist visa.. she is living in idaho USA and she wanted me to process her visa her because she will be coming here on 1st of december. our plan is ipapadala niya lahat ng documents needed(photocopy with notorization) via fedex then i will process..is it possible na ako ang mag process? do we need a authorization letter? okay lang po ba na photocopy pero naka notarized naman..yung mga docs po niya like bank statements are from US kasi dun po siya nakatira including yung sa tax and car registration..
Hi! Is your sister a US citizen? If yes, she doesn’t need an Australian Visitor visa.
If your sister is a US passport holder traveling to Australia for tourism, she can apply for Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to stay in Australia for less than 90 days. it’s a label-free visa, she need to pay for a small fee for that ETA.
If your sister is a US Immigrant (Green card) , that’s a different story. Pls. visit/ call any Phil. Embassy or Consulate in the US. You and your sister should visit the US Department of State website re Visa Waiver Program ( VWP) for more info.

I’m so happy to announce that my Tourist Visa Application was GRANTED!!! 🙂
Here’s the timeline of the process:
October 18 – I lodged my application at VIA Centre
October 21 – The Australian embassy texted me that my documents has been received by them
October 31 – Decision Date (pero hindi ko alam pa at this time)
November 5 – PIASI texted me that my documents have been dispatched to the courier. Air 21 also texted me that my shipment will be delivered on Nov 6. Pero nasurprise ako kasi that same day (Nov 5) dumating na din agad yung documents ko sa bahay. I was expecting na kinabukasan pa. hehehe. That day ko lang din nalaman thru the delivered letter ang result na granted kaya I was so nervous since they have texted me. hehehe!
Nakakatuwa kasi ang bilis ng process! 🙂

So I want to share my experience:
My case:
I’m 25 years old, a Registered Nurse and currently working as a School Nurse (for more than two years). I was granted with a Schengen Tourist Visa last 2010 and has traveled to France, Italy and Thailand. My boyfriend/fiance (for more than 8 years), is also 25 years old and a Filipino. He’s a Chemical Engineer (Phils and Australia) and a Graduate Visa holder (temporary work visa). We have traveled to France and Italy together. My main purpose of visit is to celebrate with him on the special events in our lives: his birthday, our 100th month as a couple, Christmas, New Year. And also, for me to witness and experience the beauty of Australia.

Inistapler nya beside the one pasted in the application form. bale magkatabi yug 2 photos sa application form. I lodged mine last Oct 18. I don’t know pero wala namang mawawala if you have an extra photo din. 🙂
Help me naman.. I have a sponsor. Do I still need to provide bank statements?, how much money do I need to have in my account to get a bank statement? Sa payment details as last form, binayaran niya tru his credit card but we’re supposed to file my visa tru VIA Center… Panu yun.. Hi leny based on my own experience in my two tv apps, I didn’t submit my own bank statements, just my bf’s latest bank statements ung pinapadala lng sa post nila every month and his proof of tenancy like home loan or tenancy agreement. With the payment method I’m not sure about that ksi I paid through MC, maybe you can call the free hotline and ask them how. May iba kong narinig dito they got a confirmation slip ata or something after paying with credit card then you have to attach that with your tv application.

hellothere! i have tried to apply for 6months to 1 year multiple entry tourist visa. the embassy called me to confirm my application, then she advised me that its better if she will just give me a 3months multiple entry good for 1 year than 6 months. ksi ung 6months daw slngle entry lng tpos need ko pa magpamedical which will cause delay daw, ksi iaapprove na nya daw visa ko after the call which is nov. 15( visa grant date ko so nagsasabi sya ng totoo). Hmm i think yes they will wait for the medical result before they grant your visa.

Hi Liz, that means you can go in an out of Australia anytime within one year upon the granting of your visa, and stay for up to three months each. You can enter Australia in December, stay until March, fly out to the Philippines or any other countries, and fly right back into Australia. That also means that you can enter Australia days before the validity expires, and still stay for up to three months (example: visa is valid until December 4, 2014. You can enter Australia in December 3, 2014 and stay for three months).
hellothere! if you’ll be granted 6months then you can stay 6 months straight in Aus.

that means your visa is valid until june 4, 2014. pwede ka dumating on or before june 4. tpos dun magsstart ung 3months mo, pero pwede kna umalis now coz your visa is already in effect then 3months stay ganun.

Hingi po ko sa inyong lahat ng advice regarding sa intention ko to travel in Australia. Bali may friend po ako dun na business owner. Bali siya po ang mag-iinvite sa akin to stay in Australia under 3-month Tourist visa. I know po na hindi puwede ang visa na ito for working but honestly po, mag-wowork ako dun and balak po niya na i-change or extend na lang ang visa ko before expiration. But for this tourist visa application ang letter of support niya at letter of intent ko ang reason ay for sight seeing and travelling around Australia. Ang tanong ko po firstly, puwede po ba itong mga supporting docs ko?
1. Letter of Support (Written by my friend in NSW who is inviting me to stay in Australia under his financial expense).
2. Certified True Copy of his passport bio-page.
3. His Personal Bank Statement
4. Certified True Copy of his Driver’s license
5. My Letter of Intent
6. Certified True Copy of my passport bio-page
7. Certified True Copy of SSS-ID
8. NSO Birth Certificate
I will bring my credentials din po so that once I need to apply for extension or change of visa status i-aattach ko sa application for temporary work visa. So puwede po ba na mag-apply for temporary visa while in Australia under Tourist Visa?

hazel dun sa visa notice mo u will see there till when is the validity of your visa. if the visa was granted dec 2013 for sure that is valid till june 2014. ibig sabihin nyan kung gusto mo tlaga pumunta ng australia kailangan mo gamitin ang visa mo bago matapos ang validity date. kc usually pag binigyan ka ng 3 mos. single entry, ang visa ay valid in a span of 6 mos. kaya pag lumampas ng 6 mos at d mo ginamit ang visa mo baliwala na yan. tignan mo sa visa notice until when is the validity of your visa. let me know para matulungan kita sa tanung mo. adriana, meron na nga post about that. but then i will answer that question of yours. yun sinasabi mo sa stay until 3 mos. meaning u can only stay in australia for 3 mos. and u have to go back the phils. but if u want to go back to australia again u can also go back without applying for visa anymore coz u have a multiple 1 year entry. you can also exit to singapore or new zealand para mas mura ang fare kung balak mo bumalik agad sa australia. puede ka mag stay ng 3 mos lagi sa loob ng isang taon. Hi I just wanna ask if someone experienced about 2nd urinalysis test for pmv? My gf done medical from philippines before she came here in australia. Now they asking her for repeat urinalysis but shes here in australia. Is she able to do her repaet urinalysis here? And if yes what we should do and what clinic is accredited by australian embassy here in australia. Thanks

hello sidd.. very easy lang yung pagbayad sa nso.. ang ginawa ko sis.. may file no kasi tayo doon naka state doon sa, hap id mo sis.. tapos.. follow mo lang ung instruction sa pag request nso.. then. copy mo yung file no mo.. at punta ka sa bdo..ibigay mo lang sa kanila ung file no mo.. at then bayad.. sid ako din kas nagsubmit din ako nnag nso.. pero they stil asking me another 1 online.. yes sis.. 8 weeks.. bago ka magkaroon nang co.. depende din, may iba mabilis lang hope it helps..

angel, sometiimes yun travel tax ay ksama na sa ticket na binayaran mo. sana tinanung mo yun travel agency na binilihan ng ticket kung ksama na travel tax. kc last august we got a promo tcket from PAL ksama na ang travel tax, kya 550 na terminal feei na lang ang binayaran namin sa airport. happy trip. I just want to thank this website for helping me to apply for an australian tourist visa. Your posts helped me a lot. So it’s my time to pay it forward to those people who would like to apply for a tourist visa. I am a Filipino citizen currently in Tokyo for a 3-month vacation so I authorized my aunt to pass all my documents at VIA centre in Makati. Here are the ff documents that I’ve included:
– my birth certificate
– my children’s birth certificates
– copy of my 3 passports’ bio & relevant pages
– 2 bank certificates
– 4 land titles
– copy of Toyota fortuner’s registration
– letter of intent
– plane ticket
– travel insurance quotation
– my australian boyfriend’s driver’s license, letter of invitation, bank statement, 2 pay slips, employment certificate, our photos when he went to the Philippines
– my mother’s employment certificate, passport, Japan’s residence card, 2 pay slips(since I’m currently unemployed and my mother is supporting me, I’ve submitted her documents too)
Dec. 11, 2013 – my aunt brought my documents at via centre
Dec. 12. – Australian embassy texted me to inform that they’ve received my documents
Dec. 13. – Consul called to inform me that she’ll grant me a 3-month stay valid for 6 months instead of a multiple-entry visa that I asked for
Dec. 14. – australian embassy texted me that my documents have been dispatched and I’ll receive it in a few days. But then, that afternoon I’ve received my documents.
Important tip: just be honest and pray
It’s really amazing that it took only a day for them to grant me a visa. Thank you australian embassy for processing my documents so fast that I still couldn’t believe I got it this soon. To my boyfriend thank u so much for being patient, positive, and for your prayers(I’ll see u soon mahal ko). To this site and all the bloggers, again I want to say thank you for your help. I have been reading responses here and this blog is a huge help in my visitor visa application, though I just lodged my application last week. I just have a question which hopefully you guys can answer me. Based on my readings, usually once the application is lodged, the embassy will notify that docs are received thru text or email. In my case, I lodged my application last Thurs in Cebu and I was told by the one who assisted me that my docs will reach the embassy by Monday. It’s already Thursday now and still got no words from the embassy. Does this happen? My friend told me not to worry coz sometime they do not acknowledge or notify and next thing you know the docs is already shipped out. Can anyone enlighten me on this? It’s my first time and I’m getting anxious day by day. 😐

April nangyayari talaga sya specialky kung dun mo mismo sa centre ni lodge..usually no txt of acknowledgement na..kc dun palang mismo sure na narecieve nla personally ung docs..usually sa mga pick up lng cla nag ttxt for acknowledgement..it happened to me before na walang txt…relax and wait ka nlng..im also waiting for my 2nd visa..and also lodge last week pa via air21 pick up…

I read this in an article:
Note: The Australian Government no longer provides a Port and Date Stamp in travellers’ passports on departure from Australia without a request. If you need a stamp in your passport, you must ask the Customs officer when you depart Australia.

this means that when u arrive Australia the officer will stamp your passport “arrived australia”, when you leave they no longer provide “departure” stamp. but its already recorded in thier system that u left australia. pero kung gusto mo magkaron ng departure stamp you can simply request the officer to do so. 🙂
that was my worry din sis when i first travelled australia.:) i was already on the plane back to mnl when i noticed that i dont have a derpature stamp. i had to browse my previous travels overseas and nakita ko na halos lahat my arrival and departure stamps. i was so worried thinking that the officer might have forgotten to stamp my passport until i arrived in mnl and i found out that even aussie citizens are not provided departure stamps:)

Thank you for clarification. The same thing happened to me when I left the UK. They didnt stamp my passport that I left London.
I was worried too, i hope the immigration officers in OZ are nice if i ask them to stamp my passport. I love stamps 🙂
Also if I plan to stay longer than 3 months or extend my stay how’s the process for that? I was given 1 year multiple entry visa with 3 months stay per visit. Is it okay to get an extension in OZ? I read about Bridging Visa i am not quite sure what it is all about.

im not really the perfect person to answer about visa extensions but il try to share what i know. i think you can extend for as long as you have a compelling reason to stay.
and if ur planning to apply for onshore partner visa naman sis, i think u can avail the bridging visa since wala ka nmn condition (no further stay).
me and my bf’s plan is to apply defacto next year. but we won’t be able to meet the one year living together criteria so we will register our relationship in his state. spoke to an australian migration agent and he said that if my visa doesn’t have restrictions i can apply onshore and i will be provided a bridging visa so i can extend my stay until the decision has been made for partner visa. 🙂

Hi, just a question about certified true copies of documents —
Kailangan ba mag apply pa ako sa issuing body (DFA for passport, LTO for driver’s license, University Registrar for certificate of enrollment, etc) OR gagawa lang ba ako ng xerox copies ng documents tapos dadalhin lahat sa notary public? Iba-iba kasi ang mga sagot ng mga napagtanungan ko, pati abogado sabi hindi daw notary ang makakapagsabi na certified true copy ang isang document. Thanks in advance! 🙂

hi aiza, no need mo na pa-notarized ang documents ng sister mo from AU basta need mo lng is clear photocopy ng docu nya, ganun din kasi ginawa ko lahat ng docu ng bf ko send lng nya thru e-mail then may sign lng nya yun invitation letter.

This thread has been a great help in my application for a tourist visa back in Oct. I arrived here on 20 Dec and will be departing NSW later. Anyway, in my application, I lodged it on a Friday and got an sms from them the following Monday that my visa is ready for pick up at VIA . That was really quick!
Although my bf provided the lodging and living expenses while in NSW, I didnt request him for a letter invite or anything. I tried to go the hard way to know how far can i got with my visa app on my own. Here are the requirements I submitted for a 3 week stay in NSW (excluding the forms required by the immigration):
letter of intent addressed to the embassy of australia
approved leave form and travel authority from my office
bank and credit card statements
cert. true copy of my biopage and pages with stamps of my passport
cert. true copy of my property
certification of my employment and compensation
itinerary
my etickets (return flight was just a reservation)
manager’s check
I plan to go back my mid of this year hoping to get a multiply entry valid for one year.

Sobrang naka tulong yong site na to sakin. I lodged my application last january15,2014 got approved by the australian embassy just yesterday.so it only took 6 days. I was really worried coz i dont have enough money in my savings account.
I only give them a photo copy of my passport (scan lang yon 🙂 , photo copy of my birth certificate not even the original one, photos of me and my boyfriend and letter of intent. im not really confident that it will be granted coz aside that i dont have funds in my savings account..i didnt have enough reasons to go back here in philippines coz i dont even own a property nor a job.but thanks god..even without bank certificate my visa has been approved by the embassy…my bf make sure all his documents are complete and i think it really helps. Just keep praying guys. Prayer works.. Anyway may aalis ba dito ngaung april..sa april kasi alis ko…
