One of the places I’ve always wanted to go to is the Caribbean. Sun, sea, sand, what else can you ask for? The question is, is it possible to have cheap holidays in the gorgeous islands of the Caribbean?
Though the more popular islands can get quite pricey, choosing some of the smaller islands can give you that Caribben exprience without the heart-stopping credit card bill at the end of the trip. I’ve seen the Globe Trekker – Eastern Caribbean episode, which gave me hope that budget travel in the Carribean IS possible. Traveller Justine Shapiro island hopped from Trinidad, to its sister island of Tobago, on to the spice island Grenada, the remote island of Carriacou (where she visited the home of artist Canute Calliste), and finishing off at Dominica. As with most tourist-y places, there are expensive digs, though if you look enough, there can be great deals to be had. A native hut for accomodation and local busses instead of a posh resort and limousine service, perhaps?
Okay, holidays to Caribbean will eat at my travel budget, but will I write it off my destination list? Never! Though money is a big issue when traveling, I believe that it’s important to indulge and give yourself a treat once in a while. It keeps you sane, happy and content. Besides, if you can travel in the Caribbean on the cheap, it’d be even better right? With the number of deals and information you can get online about travel destinations, it’d be easy to know where to go, when to go and when to book.
Where would I go? As I’ve posted before, I’d definitely go to Sint Maarten/St. Martin to take a chance at getting run over by a 747. Dominica is also up for consideration because of all that nature (I recently realized that though I complain about it, I really do like hiking) and to snorkel or dive at the Champagne Reef. Trinidad is another possible choice, specialy if it’s carnival season (it’s hard to be anti-social during festivals). Or maybe to the Cayman Islands, a place I’ve gotten to know not through travel shows but through spy novels?
How about you? Where will you go for your Caribbean holiday?
